I'm surprised that a lot of people think that Bradley should be a player-captain.

Ever since Paul Azinger led the USA to victory in 2008, people have been saying how pivotal the captain's role is with the success or failure of the team.

So now we want Bradley to not be completely focused on all his responsibilities as a captain?

I guess you can say that the Ryder Cup's captain does most of his work and preparation before the event and during the event, you just let the boys play. The pairings and who is going to play have already been determined at the start.

I agree. I was super excited about having an intense, emotional captain. I'd be disappointed if he deferred to the assistants.

Yes. Why not? It is my preference.....plus two years ago Cantlay and the hat issue became a huge distraction.

Reasonable...but I can't stand Morikawa (seems like an arrogant insufferable jerk).

I mean, Cantlay has only beat Gotterup in 7 of the last 10 tournaments and has shown a consistent ability to be a top 10 player in the world. But other than that, sure, let's take Gotterup.

You know, this is why I have stopped posting as much as I used to. The question was "who do you have?", I post who I have and want on the team and the jerks on this board become Morikawa's...insufferable arrogant jerks, smartasses etc.

Your opinion is your opinion. I have mine. No need to be jerk about it. Good grief.

Not a jerk just facts. You're picking worse golfers based on made up thoughts about personalities. That seems more jerkish than just posting what they've actually done on the course.

Sorry I hurt your feelings.

As a fan of USA, I hope Keegan does not pick himself. Unnecessary complication. Esp considering Burns and Young are just fine to man the 11-12 spots.

As a fan of Keegan himself, I hope he does not pick himself. Too much backfire risk. I want him involved in the Ryder Cup for a long time.

As a fan of the Ryder Cup as an event, hell yea I want him to pick himself. The theatre would be incredible.
aggiegolfer2012

I agree
I blame the PGA of America more than him for picking him as captain. It was a knee jerk move after losing big on the road and after the Netflix special came out and made it seem like he was way more deserving of a pick in 2023 than he actually was. We've been fine at home outside of one collapse in singles in 2012.
If they had made this move for an away cup, it's fine, try something different. But all it's done for a home cup is made it more complicated.

I don't think he was a jerk. I do think you're right. Cantlay is a golfing icer. Playing with that guy would drive anyone bats. Golf is about rhythm and his partner would need that same slow ass twitchy approach.

I don't think you could be more wrong if you tried. Go back and re-read what I posted and what the other poster replied to - if you care to.

The poster that replied to me was questioning my choices/opinion. And in the typical snark ass manner that people online use...disagreed with my opinion. Again, I would respect your opinion based on your thoughts.

Anyways no problem, but was snarky in the response. Stuff that would never happen face to face.

Slight diversion - I met a father / son team playing in a tournament at my club, yesterday. I was wearing my A&M shirt and they introduced themselves as Aggies. Spent the next 45 minutes talking with them at the bar. Couldn't have been nicer.

Point is - Aggies in most face to face meetings with fellow Aggies are always great to each other. Polite, nice and engaging. Here on this board - behind the keyboard.....are like drivers with road rage. Just jerks to fellow travelers.

Sad really.

I absolutely would've said what I said face to face. It isn't like I was challenging your manhood, we are talking about Ryder Cup picks.

Just going to ignore from here because this thread had been pretty solid discussion before you got in your feelings.

I had the exact same thought. I was streaming it and I thought it had frozen. It was absolutely ridiculous. The fact "the group" was talked to about being out of position was laughable.

Cantplay is soo slow. Yes he did well in Rome but damn. I'm picking Gotterup over Cantlay, because Gotterup looks like a pit bull looking for a fight. Yes it could blow up, I agree Cantlay is a better player, but a Jersey guy at Bethpage, a bomber off the tee…

Worth a shot to me. I admit this isn't a popular opinion.

Keegan should captain, not play. But I'm ok if he chooses himself as he is a bulldog and that's comes in handy in this format.

Having said that, it's my assumption Morikawa is on the team. I'd choose Cantlay over Morikawa.
aggiegolfer2012
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The Cantlay stuff doesn't bother me that much
Yeah the time over the ball is brutal, but he also doesn't take a practice swing most of the time. Make me pick between playing with somebody that hangs over the ball for a long time, or somebody with a pre shot routine like Justin Rose or even Keegan who is just bouncing around moving back and forth, I'd take Cantlay.

I read somewhere that Cantley isn't as slow if you take his entire process. I swore I read that somewhere and they had stats on it.

I think he's a little slow by tour standards but nowhere near the worst. As others pointed out, he's slow over the ball which is when the camera is on. So he looks really slow to the TV viewer.

And him and Xander are buddies and they play well together. There's no matchup issues with him.

Yeah, he gets a worse reputation because it's over the ball that he's slow and getting over the ball is the TV cue to show a shot, but that's basically his entire process. If I had to watch all of Keegan's process for every shot I don't think I could watch golf on TV.
Really noticed it with Rose when they were in a playoff so they showed everything pre shot.

I think Keegan should play. He's in good form and is a red blooded American lunatic. We need the fire.

It's a very tough decision.

I'll be shocked if Morikawa and Cantlay are left off.

Gotterup and Novak are not making the team, IMO. Captains picks (assuming Bradley is out) should be:

Thomas
Griffin
Young
Morikawa
Cantlay
Burns

I agree that if the picks are handed out based on a "who deserves it most" basis, we're basically down to six of the following seven

JT
Cantlay
Griffin
Young
Morikawa
Burns
Keegan

At this point, I'd be shocked if JT and Cantlay weren't on the team, so call it four spots open for the remaining five.

But I also feel like that "who deserves it most" might be the wrong way of looking at it. If you assume that the six automatic qualifiers + JT/Cantlay, the remaining four should be the guys who plug holes in whichever format we feel weaker or compliment someone in the 8 who are effectively qualified.

Much is going to be made of the final picks for the team. Keegan picking himself or not. If Keegan does pick himself, who is he passing on. Etc. But the Ryder Cup is going to be won/lost based on how our top guys perform. It's very likely that the final picks are going to just play 1-2 team matches exclusively in one format.

First priority should be checking down the list and making sure our 8 are set. It starts at the top with making sure Scottie has the right partners in each format. Then decide if we're going to roll with Schauffele/Cantlay in foursomes or split them up. Then decide who's playing with JT in foursomes. Figure out how best to deploy Spaun/Bryson. Etc. From there, it should start to emerge what gaps we need to fill with the final spots.

With that in mind, the idea of passing on someone like Griffin for someone like Gotterup would be absurd if viewed through a "who deserves it more" lens. But if we're trying to fill a specific need. Say the team looks pretty set but the missing piece is a bruising four ball guy who can make alot of birdies as opposed to a steadier foursomes player, then Gotterup could make sense. To be clear, I'm not advocating for this specific scenario. It's just how I would be looking at it if i I was Keegan and had access to all the info.
