That's a great way to put it, he has an engineer's approach to portraying a story.
He even has an engineer's face. That or an OCD accountant with minimal people skills.

This is an interesting question.
I remember when Interstellar came out, it was received as overly sentimental. It was probably his worst reviewed movie at the time, and probably still is save for Tenet.
I think his problem as a filmmaker isn't the emotion of the story, per say, its that the structure of the movie can sometimes overwhelm the emotional intricacies and such. He can often leave audiences cold or cerebral. BUT, its also what makes his movies enjoyable to rewatch, because all the elements are there and once you know the story beats, you can really latch on to the deeper elements of his movies, IMHO.
Like with Tenet, you don't really understand that Robert Pattinson's character is the emotional core of the movie until the very end. When you go back and watch it, with that knowledge, its a totally different, deeper, movie, IMO.
But what I do think he excels at is archetypal stories where theme and character are so enmeshed and the plot and structure just unspool both before you. And well, thats The Odyssey.
If Christopher Nolan didn't cast this mfer as Hector in "The Odyssey" we burn down Hollywood pic.twitter.com/RoDbGhGg27

This thread very much reminds me of the Gladiator 2 discussion after the trailer dropped - people expressing their concerns and the subsequent back and forth (which is entertaining in its own right, but I digress).
Casting choices aside, there is Batman armor, Cylons (I liked that), and little Timmy telling us daddy's coming home.
It all just gives me pause that the epic movie I've been waiting for will fall short of my expectations.
But, this is The Odyssey and it is Christopher Nolan, so

I just don't think Tenet was a good movie. That could also be because I'm not smart enough to keep up with it. I was completely lost in that film.

Watching Tenet was like getting to the theater 20 minutes after the movie started with a massive hangover, except I was there early and hadn't been drinking. I've never tried to figure it out after that.

Matt Damon is from Boston and probably a big Tom Brady fan, so you get Let's Go
Every retelling of The Odyssey gets adapted to the culture of the times, and this is our current culture
Emily Wilson thinks the very idea of a ‘faithful translation’ is a ‘gendered’ concept that presupposes that the ‘male-authored original’ is always of more worth than the translation (which after all, might have been written by a woman). pic.twitter.com/ruV60PJ1cN

In light of all the recent Odyssey news. I think everyone that needlessly trashed this excellent film owes Robert Eggers a huge apology. pic.twitter.com/EnDfuAEyd2

Once again, this whole source material thing is pure rumor, based on nothing more than a random ass tweet by some random ass account, with absolutely no sourcing whatsoever. Same as the Page rumor. Then again, who gives a **** about truth or accuracy when there's *****ing and moaning and virtue signaling to do on social media.

I loved it, but I could see why a lot wouldn't. It surprised me. I'd love to see an Odyssey done as authentically as possible. Or like what Mel did with Apocalypto, the people, the language, the geography, jarring immersion. A group of recognizable actors with a mix of British and American accents, speaking lines that have been rendered for a contemporary audience just pulls you out of the world I want to be in. But, thats just personal preference stuff. Nolan is doing things his way and it'll have its own appeal.

I got a lot of **** on here when I made a thread about it being awesome last year.
