That's a great way to put it, he has an engineer's approach to portraying a story.

He even has an engineer's face. That or an OCD accountant with minimal people skills.

This is exactly how I feel. I won't have any issues with casting if it works, and this is truly mythology, not history. But the trailers haven't done much for me. I really hope Nolan can pull it off.

This is an interesting question.

I remember when Interstellar came out, it was received as overly sentimental. It was probably his worst reviewed movie at the time, and probably still is save for Tenet.

I think his problem as a filmmaker isn't the emotion of the story, per say, its that the structure of the movie can sometimes overwhelm the emotional intricacies and such. He can often leave audiences cold or cerebral. BUT, its also what makes his movies enjoyable to rewatch, because all the elements are there and once you know the story beats, you can really latch on to the deeper elements of his movies, IMHO.

Like with Tenet, you don't really understand that Robert Pattinson's character is the emotional core of the movie until the very end. When you go back and watch it, with that knowledge, its a totally different, deeper, movie, IMO.

But what I do think he excels at is archetypal stories where theme and character are so enmeshed and the plot and structure just unspool both before you. And well, thats The Odyssey.

This thread very much reminds me of the Gladiator 2 discussion after the trailer dropped - people expressing their concerns and the subsequent back and forth (which is entertaining in its own right, but I digress).

Casting choices aside, there is Batman armor, Cylons (I liked that), and little Timmy telling us daddy's coming home.

It all just gives me pause that the epic movie I've been waiting for will fall short of my expectations.

But, this is The Odyssey and it is Christopher Nolan, so

I just saw a suggestion on Youtube that Robert Eggers would be a better choice to direct this movie, and seeing what he did with The Witch and The Northman I totally agree. But of course, I'm someone who wants a by-the-book (pun intended) depiction.

Whelp, Gladiator 2 trailers showed us horrible CGI monkeys and ridiculous action and dialogue....and that's what the movie ended up being, lol. Soooo, let's help this is not a similar case.

I hear what you're saying and think that's a good take on his style. His movies aren't devoid of heart, but his storytelling structure can overwhelm it until maybe the 3rd or 4th viewing.

Not really. Interstellar is an 8.7 on IMDB. It's an incredible movie and looks to be his 2nd highest rated film.

I just don't think Tenet was a good movie. That could also be because I'm not smart enough to keep up with it. I was completely lost in that film.

That "Let's Go" makes me wonder if Nolan is capable of writing an epic. The dialogue we've gotten in the trailers has been incredibly bland and modern.

What should a charge be preceded with in an epic tale? I don't know, maybe:

or

But, those movies were made by people who put an emphasis on adapting the original storyteller's vision and voice. I would be interested to see if anyone has a breakdown of the % of the dialogue from all LotR movies that were taken directly from the book. It's literally in every scene.

But, when you watch the LotR trilogy, you feel like you've been teleported to Middle Earth. One of the key reasons the viewer feels this is due to the way the script is written.

"Not idly do the leaves of Lorien fall." No one talks like that. But in a high epic fantasy story, it feels like the perfect thing to say. Again, I could literally take lines from every scene in those movies as a demonstration of great writing.

ETA: And my biggest reason to call back to the LotR is because I was hopeful to get a similar amazing epic, brought to the big screen by one of the best Directors working, today. I was also hoping this may stoke the desire of audiences to want to see more epics. I love epics and wish hollywood could justify greenlighting more of them.

Watching Tenet was like getting to the theater 20 minutes after the movie started with a massive hangover, except I was there early and hadn't been drinking. I've never tried to figure it out after that.

Matt Damon is from Boston and probably a big Tom Brady fan, so you get Let's Go

Every retelling of The Odyssey gets adapted to the culture of the times, and this is our current culture

The scene opens with Page speaking dramatically about the patriarchy to a gathered crowd in the city plaza.

Damon: This speech is mid. Patriarchy? Where did words like these even originate? Let's dip. I'm sailing home. Who's with me?

Crew member: It's a dangerous journey, Ody. The otherly-ocularly-abled beings of height that live in harmony with the land do not take lightly to the violence imposed by white male colonizer oppressors.

Once again, this whole source material thing is pure rumor, based on nothing more than a random ass tweet by some random ass account, with absolutely no sourcing whatsoever. Same as the Page rumor. Then again, who gives a **** about truth or accuracy when there's *****ing and moaning and virtue signaling to do on social media.

I'm guessing the people who skipped Northman or didn't like it that much are the people who will likely find this Odyssey their speed. Whereas Eggers went all out to immerse the viewer in Norse culture and mysticism, Nolan seems to be aiming to make some themes from the Odyssey accessible for people who aren't that interested in classical history or literature. Northman was authentic, but also weird as hell as a result. It seems like Nolan's Odyssey will take the opposite approach by making a version that an average young American can see themselves in.

Eggers would have admittedly been incredible for The Odyssey. I have a feeling I'm going to like Nolan's narrative/storytelling/framing more than what Eggers would have done, but probably would have liked Eggers dialogue and of course his designs/look/cinematography more than Nolan's. Then again, this is the first scripted, full-length movie to ever be shot entirely in IMAX, so I could very well end up amending that last part after I take it all in.

It's not just a rumor on X. I've seen the quotes Truthed and ReTruthed by a reputable vaccine side-effectologist who has extensively done his own research on the damage caused by the jab, so it's basically a fact at this point.

I loved it, but I could see why a lot wouldn't. It surprised me. I'd love to see an Odyssey done as authentically as possible. Or like what Mel did with Apocalypto, the people, the language, the geography, jarring immersion. A group of recognizable actors with a mix of British and American accents, speaking lines that have been rendered for a contemporary audience just pulls you out of the world I want to be in. But, thats just personal preference stuff. Nolan is doing things his way and it'll have its own appeal.

Your thoughts on Apocalypto brought to mind Netflix's Barbarians. I was beside myself when these guys rode up and spoke Classical Latin.

Not that I have that expectation for the Odyssey, but I was hoping for a similar authenticity as you put it and not a reimagined version.

I will be watching this with my 21-year-old son and our neighbors, who are also Gen Z. I'll be curious of their reaction as opposed to my old self.

Indisputably a top 10 film for me.

Eggers, even when he stumbles, is incredible. Nosferatu, unfortunately, featured witchcraft casting out witchcraft, instead of the mystical Catholicism / Orthodoxy of the source materials.

However, Eggers has detailed respect for historicity. And then Nolan, where evidently Travis Scott (go ahead and look up some lyrics) is cast because Homer and rap are harmonious.

Did The Northman have a soundtrack of authentic Viking music played on instruments made up of bones from the body of conquered men?
