Pretty much this.

I think some of the people that got fired during 'cancel culture' deserved it. If they were openly racist af, I didn't bat an eye when they got fired. Cancel culture got coined when it started going over the top, trying to compare what is going on right now to that is asinine. I don't agree with this if this was coming down from the FCC and hope we don't go down that road. However, I can see some arguments against a full media aparateus terming the other side as a the next Hitler as they have openly been doing, being a bit of a safety issue. I don't know the solution is, but it can't be the status quo.

Edit: I see the tweet got posted while I was typing this out, but will keep it up regardless.

You can ***** and moan all you want about someone you hate doing something hateful.

But you cannot argue that our government should be able to effectively silence him via public threat, yet you conveniently keep side-stepping that central issue.

You're just mad that someone you don't like said something you don't like.

That's called being emotional.

It takes a different kind of maturity to be able to admit he should still be able to say what he said without fear of threat/reprisal from our government. Because what happens now that the precedent is set, but the tables are eventually turned, and the next Democrat-led/installed FCC chair goes after Greg Gutfeld or whoever in the same way?

Yes, it does take a special kind of maturity to think someone should be able to spew crazy **** about a cold blooded murder and not have their boss, who already was planning not to renew him and has to sell advertising in your time slot in the meantime, do something. You got that right

"But when a person says something that a ton of people find offensive, rude, dumb in real time and then that person is punished for it that's not cancel culture. That is consequences for your actions."

100% this.

The problem, though, as you alluded to, is WHO is doing the punishing. His employer? No issues there whatsoever. But the United States government threatening his employer? That's a beyond slippery slope that we're already sliding down.

Seems like this is likely the case. It's like when the girlfriend you've already kinda realized is not wife material does something over the top crazy that you can feel good breaking up with her for. They got to seem decent and can a ****ty show in one fell swoop.

Was Kimmel also losing the network tens of millions of dollars each year too? Genuine question. I have no idea but I have to assume he isn't making them money. Is it possible they finally just found an excuse to pull the plug? Can you bring yourself to admit that just maybe that was a factor?

Once again, you're completely missing the point/nuance. For the cheap seats... if it was JUST his boss, no issue there whatsoever. But the United States government threatening - and effectively forcing - his boss? You cannot tell me with a straight face that should be legal/allowed and still call yourself a patriot.

Of course that's possibility. Maybe even a likely one.

But that in no way deters from the fact that the government still threatened them with "or else," thus attempting to snuff out speech they didn't like.

Can you bring yourself to admit that?

The United States government threatened Kimmel's employer to do something about speech they didn't like.

That is an indisputable fact.

Whether Kimmel's employer acted in response to that threat or independent of it is almost irrelevant.

Either way, you can't ignore the timing.

I would argue that only strengthens my point then too. The fact that this has now happened twice, both times only days after threats from our government (or at least very strong hints of a threat in the case of Colbert, but both times from Carr), almost assuredly isn't a coincidence.

Not sure if y'all are getting the message, but spewing crazy stuff about this is bad for business and companies all over America have been making this same decision with their employees by the thousands at this point. Without the FCC or big bad govt.

So Nexstar only did it at the threat of the FCC while the rest have done it for funsies, I guess. Or maybe, just maybe, they made the same exact accounting and reputational decision everyone else has

Live look at Jimmy Fallon

I didn't read most of what was said, but it sounds like ABC took CBS's model with Colbert decided to use it to stop bleeding money on the TV program instead of waiting to the bitter end.

Fallon's contract runs through 2028, though.

You weren't complaining then. This isn't escalation. It's a company cutting dead weight for doing something incredibly tone deaf as his last stupid act.

Why would I complain on an ENTERTAINMENT message board about what social media companies were doing in regards to political matters? I'm commenting on this, now, because it's actually ENTERTAINMENT related. By your logic, because I haven't complained about any number of political topics here, I must be some kind of hypocrite in regards to all of those issues, simply because I didn't bring them up while discussing Star Wars or whatever.

Different situation. The US Government wasn't involved in private companies banning Trump.
IMO private companies can ban whoever they want, they own the servers.

Is it? I have seen it reported, but do we know how those conversations actually went and how accurate the reporting on it is? Perhaps ABC leaned into some off-hand comment and is using it as cover. The "fact" (tweet) that they were going to let him back, makes it seem more on ABC than the FCC's pressure.

With that being said, I found this funny

I don't post on F16 period.

This is just more backwards logic on your part.

You're basically saying that I have to post about something on a message board in order to make it a valid complaint of mine in your eyes. When, in reality, you have no idea whether I complained about it or not real life (I did, for the record).

Yes.

It was a threat literally made on a public podcast that was then publicly reported by multiple outlets.

I already posted this link once in this thread, and it's been quoted in another post or two as well...

I'd love to see the license and verify this. If true, it completely justified FCC getting involved. If he also refused to apologize and correct it, that is the ultimate cover for the bosses to pull his show.
