The real victim here is the other people on the dude's research team who now have to do a bunch of extra-work because the guy got deported.

48 hour rule. Gotta be more to the story.

Pretty smart cookie too.Quote:
Dr. Emily Bencosme-Cuevas is passionate about vector-borne diseases, vector-host-pathogen interactions, and vaccine research and development. She began her research by studying the immune system of the Lone Star tick and continued during her Ph.D., focusing on the black-legged tick and the Lyme disease agent, Borrelia burgdorferi. After years of contributing to the tick research community, she joined Dr. Joel Vega-Rodriguez's laboratory in 2024 as an IRTA research fellow. She aspires to contribute to the mosquito/malaria community. Her current research explores the antibody repertoire of different vertebrate hosts. The goal is to identify candidates for prophylactic and transmission-blocking immunizations.
That was obviously a joke post. I think we need to rethink deporting really smart scientists.

I grew up with this guy in Del Rio before we went to A&M. His little brother is a good friend of mine and so is Will, the guy being detained.
That's his sister in law in the picture. He went to S Korea for his little brother's wedding to the girl pictured above. Mike, Will's little brother is also an A&M undergrad/masters/doctorate degree holder that now teaches at KSU vet school.
This is a good dude, from a good family. I really hope he gets a fair shake at staying in the states. Yeah he got popped with like a gram of weed 14 years ago, but he did everything they asked him to do after he got in trouble & completed whatever programs/community service/probation the judge assigned to him.
I really don't think is the guy we need to be going after when there are tons of actually dangerous people here illegally that we could be trying to remove instead of a guy that made a dumb mistake a long time ago but is in good legal standing today.
By the way, I am all for deporting people here illegally, but as far as I know, Will is here legally.

I remember when the trans stuff first began popping off 10 years ago, and later seeing how the Dems became entrenched around the idea, I remember thinking, this is going to cost them because this is lunacy. Lunacy for a small minority that no majority will ever be able to understand, and there is a strong possibility this is rooted in actual mental health issues.
I have that same alarm going off now. Reps are going to regret HOW this is being done. We were promised criminals and violent *******s being deported, and yet it's the people that work our farms, build our homes, and evidently research and teach in our universities.
I'm sure someone will reply with snide BS, blah, blah, blah. But how this is being done, is not good, and a wild misrepresentation of an already questionable plan. It'll be interesting to see how this gets attacked over the next year or two by political opposition.

You're right, not sure on why he never took care of the immigration issues, haven't seen him in a very long time. But I do know he isn't a bad guy or up to anything shady, but you are correct it was dumb to not take care of any immigration issues, especially if his GC did actually expire. I do not know that for a fact, but if indeed true, that's on him to get it taken care of and remain in good legal standing.
For the people asking what he did during his large gap in between school, pretty sure he worked for a large shipping company out of Houston for a long time before going back to school and changing career paths.

I am not a concerned anything - especially politically (maybe more so on a human level). So, I could not care less.
But, I can tell when something is stupid and likely a losing issue is all. I'm glad y'all are getting what you voted for, to the victor go the spoils.

But he didn't pursue citizenship. Seems he likes to break laws. Probably shouldn't have left the country once the lawless president went to a retirement home.

I am half Mexican-American, and I can tell you many do support legal immigration (and Trump, in general), but they also do not like HOW it's being done and WHO is being targeted so early in the operation.

Admittedly, I am not well versed in any part of the legal system, especially immigration law, but IF he was in legal standing with his green card status, what law did he really break to be detained currently? I don't know all of the details on why someone keeps a green card vs applying for citizenship, I just know he isn't a bad dude and if his GC isn't expired and he is here legally according to the paperwork he has, then what is the reason for being detained? Like I said earlier in a different reply, if he let anything lapse and expire, then it's on him and he should have taken care of it before trying to leave and re-enter the US.
I guess what I'm trying to say is if his paperwork/documentation is all in good standing, shouldn't he be let go to go back to school/work?

Criminal expanded from violent and problematic characters to criminal as in they are here illegally, therefore they are all targets now. That's not what people really supported IMO.

People who have broken no laws get detained all the time until their situations are sorted out. That said, you are taking this guy's word for it. Sounds like "the Maryland dad."

Given the state of much of the world right now, is anywhere (worth being) actually policing immigration? The EU is already overrun. Maybe China or rich Mid-East countries are also policing.
