That right there is selfless service. Never seen a video of a situation like that!

probably a dumb question and ill probably delete.
I've been thinking about this a bunch, especially given the 100 yd swim that some girls did and the mattresses etc.

in my head, If I were a camp counselor, one of my priorities would be keeping everyone together. so like, daisy chain tying everyone's backpacks to each other or trying to tie/connect the mattresses etc.

I know what we are seeing is that there was little to no time for anything like that...but would it have even been a good idea had they tried to do so?

or would having two mattresses tied together make both more likely to hit something and flip etc

Dear Heavenly Father, please wrap everyone impacted by these terrible floods in your loving arms. Please ensure a swift and safe rescue for all of the missing people. Grant everyone impacted by this and their families strength and comfort as their lives have been turned upside down. Please watch over everyone who is involved in the ongoing rescue operations and keep them safe and make their rescue efforts fruitful. All this I ask in Jesus' name, Amen

Every day. Its all garbage.

Having to scroll by multiple reporters posting "im so and so with garbage news this, can you call me to talk about *missing loved one*" while looking for updates on missing friends has filled me with rage and loathing I didnt think I was capable of feeling right now.

Ghouls, all of them.

One of my jobs when I was with TEEX/TXTF1 was to wrangle media. Both at our facilities and when the task course was deployed.

I worked hard to get the media the stories they needed while keeping them out of the way of responders and keeping them out of harm's way in the disaster area.

Not all of them are bad. Just most of them. They've got a job to do. Unfortunately our society has become so dependent on clickbait that the good ones are fewer and further between.

You basically answered it already. No time to do this with what's probably a lot of screaming and frazzled little girls, in the dark. From what i've gathered, they were basically trying to evacuate them to higher ground at the time and were inundated quickly. Tying them together and then trying to get them move as one unit is a tall order in those conditions. If one girl falls in what's probably muddy uphill conditions then all of them are hindered in movement.

This is going to be analyzed in depth of what they could have done, and it will all be done in relative comfort with the luxury of time and no stress. Reminds me of the Sully movie and how the NTSB broke down what he could have done in locating another airport. They didn't account any time for stress and indecision in the moment that can impact the process, and when they did so realized he basically how no time for drawn out logical decision making.

And where's the rope you'd need to tie everything together?

Traditional media is at least not quite as bad as Joe Blow's Facebook Page & TikTok channel. Joe Blow needs to go viral and that desperation can lead to vile tactics.

The most unbelievable part of that video is the disgusting comment section of our local San Angelo Live FB page. The Cheeto fingered keyboard warriors have been dragging these volunteers/heroes and criticizing how they were performing the rescue.

Mind you, we are mainly dry land cotton farmers and ranchers in our community. Our VFD in Wall and all the other communities in the Concho Valley are not equipped for handling these swift water events and they were doing the absolute very best they could with what they had to work with. All while putting their lives on the line to save total strangers, and to have people dogging them and armchair QB'ing pisses me off to no end.

It's probably 7 or 8 years ago now, but I responded to a neighboring county to assist with a tornado outbreak. I have family that were local law enforcement in that area so I got sent to help. What people don't understand is the chaos that ensues in the immediate aftermath. The incident I responded to pales in comparison to the floods, but there was very limited communication ability even for first responders. I was told they were staging at the high school and sending out assignments from there. When I got to the high school I couldn't find any law enforcement because they had set up shop elsewhere and were setting up medical triage there instead. As I pulled up I was immediately flagged down by the medics who were so glad to see me because the media kept trying to sneak up to get video of all of the injured inside of the gym. All but one crew moved when I told them too. I guess the others got set right back up because my wife told me she saw me yelling at them on another channel later. I get wanting to make sure info is getting out, but have some common sense. People that have just lost everything don't deserve to have you in their face.

We had/are having a prayer vigil at our church for one of our families that are among the deceased and missing. I noticed this gal a few pews in front of me that I did not recognize and during the service she stood up, walked over to the wall, and started taking pictures of those in the church. I thought that a bit weird but thought perhaps she was a family member. Though that would still be weird, who am I to say how someone deals with tragedy. Turns out she was with one of the local papers and was later told to leave. They truly are unthinking, bottom-feeding ghouls.

The tying of folks together was tried during the 1900 storm at Galveston by nuns at St. Mary's Orphanage. As I recall two or three of the sisters used clothesline to connect themselves with 8 or so children and they all drowned.

I think tying folks together might work where you had a ditch or small creek or stream, not very wide but with water only a couple of feet deep and hard to cross. But not if the water was rushing through real rapidly. If there were enough people connected so as to provide an anchor for a few at a time doing the crossing, that might work but not in a large area of water like this event.

Because of this I am limiting myself to TexAgs only. I won't look at anything else. My daughters were not there and are safe and home with us, but are campers at Mystic. Words can't express how much I an so many others are leaning on this platform and the Aggie Community right now. Using TexAgs to filter the nonsence I am so thankfull that I don't have the anger to go with the sadness.

Yep, that happened during the storm. They found one body and pulled on the rope, and kept finding bodies.

It sounds good in principle, but as soon as one or two get stuck on something or dragged down, you go from losing one person to everyone attached.

Yeah, this water is absolutely full of debris. Entanglement is a major issue, then you have high water and heavy objects/limbs pulling everyone in

Thank you. Information has been all over the place. This morning I heard they had found Julia and the boys, now I'm hearing Julia but not the boys...

They did find their dog alive, and its heading home to be with their daughter. Some small comfort in that.

Been a rough weekend.

Yes, I first heard Julia and one of the boys but was not comfortable with the source of that information. Then heard about Julia and was still not comfortable passing on that information. Finally a family member posted so felt the information was correct. Yeah, I heard about the dog and it coming home.

And yes, this has been so terribly hard on so many. Hard to wrap my head around it all. And to think of all the other families and friends of the other children and adults who did not make it or are still missing is just a lot. Praying for good news for all of them.

I have a drone and use it a lot. If you hit a helicopter with it your a freaking idiot and should be fined and maybe you won't fly one again. The recreation license is free and takes like an hour to get. AND maybe not fly one with helicopters around.

Not flying them in restricted airspace is probably a best practice to follow as well.

I read they expanded the TFR when they started flying the Predator drones at night.

Not that the drone operator likely bothered or thought they could get away with a quick stealth flight.

A few nights in jail might be good too.

On the a swift water team. No we aren't deployed. So tying people together or tying anything onto yourself is a big no no in swift water. Our specially designed life jackets allow us to be tied onto a ring that's on our back but if we get trapped we have a tab we pull in the front that's called blowing out. It releases the whole ring from your back freeing us. Victims don't have this unfortunately. If you tie them together they'll all drown. Here are some words to live by with water.

Water is powerful, it is relentless but its predictable. Water flows from high to low down the path of least resistance. We preach that during our training.

Not quite the same scenario but many moons ago I went tubing on the quadalupe on 4th of July. When we started out someone thought it would be a good idea to tie about 15 people all together so we could float as a group. So everything is going well, drinks are flowing and everyone is enjoying life until we get to this dam/waterfall area. As we proceeded to go over everyone started piling on top of each other and it was like a whirlpool undercurrent below and no one could get out of it. Most of the tubes had flipped and people had fallen out and it got a little sketchy. I had my knife on me so I just started cutting rope as fast as I could and thankfully got everyone cut loose but I did end up losing my knife in the process. I think the river flow was under 100 cfm when we were there. I don't think it would be a good idea at a much higher cfm that happened during the flood event.

A famous story from the 1900 Galveston hurricane is a group of nuns that did that with small children. No more details are needed than it just caused them all to drown together.

Reading about that helo getting hit makes me mad. That idiot with a drone easily could have killed the crew and likely created a delay its SAR mission (assuming it was USCG).

It sucks that the Army got rid of the MAST program in the late '90s. The Coast Guard is coming from Corpus Christi, when the Army was providing some of that service out of San Antonio. That has to be some critical extra time spent flying to the site, and the Hill County is often in need of that service.
