Fazoli's is better Italian food then Cavatore....

Its cool cause its an old local spot, but I have never eaten there and really enjoyed it.

Now that I think about it, it has been like 3.5 years since I've been to Cavatore. I don't think of eating Italian food that often. When I do, I'll end up at Coltivare if I want nice or Collina's if I want to open a bottle from my stock.

Don't judge me on Collina's. We all have that one cheap ass Mexican food joint with horrible reviews that we love but won't tell anybody we go (Taqueria Arandas on Shepherd). I have an Italian one too.

Collina's has good pizza and BYOB, can't go wrong there.

Used to like Cavatore when I lived in that part of town but it's easily been 10 years since I've been there. I did steal their table side Caesar salad recipe and still make it to this day.

That's sad. Wasn't real special food, but it's a cool place and I always like the idea of independent restaurants surviving.

On a lighter note....

https://www.fox26houston.com/news/james-hardins-houston-restaurant-thirteen-locked-out-due-non-payment-rent-over-2m

Quote:

  • A restaurant owned by former Houston Rockets player James Harden has been locked out due to non-payment of rent.
  • According to a notice posted on the restaurant's door, the restaurant owes over $2.2 million.
  • It's unclear when, or if, the restaurant will reopen.

This "Thirteen by James Harden" on Bagby.

How the **** do you let a tenant go $2.2MM delinquent on rent? How much was he paying for that place, in what I wouldn't consider all that great of an area of town?

I've seen food distributors let restaurants get 7 figures in arrears before they even change terms to COD.
Gaeilge

But that 2.2MM is just in rent alone according to the article. A man of that means should've bought a property if he wanted a restaurant.

I handled a lawsuit against a well known, very succesful restaurant for many, many months of overdue rent. It definitely happens.

I get it. Just really odd to me that anyone would allow a business to go that delinquent on rent. It is bad business on the property owner IMO.

It's a tough situation because your only real "stick" is to lock them out, and that's the best way to ensure they can't ever pay you back.

At a certain point, you have to cut bait of course.
Gaeilge
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Precisely on the cut bait. How much do we think rent for the place if he is $2.2MM behind on it?
Diggity

Not sure. Place is large but that's definitely a lot of rent.

18,898 sqft according to the lockout letter.

Bad news for the Downtown fatties - Whataburger in the tunnel is closing for good next week.

Is that under the Reliant building? Used to like the long walk there for a Whatameal.

I don't remember who is in that building, but it's at 1000 Main Street.

Tacos A Go Go moving its Heights location to former Lola spot on 11th with Bobby Heugel bar program.

saw that...they're also taking over the STQ spot next to Roegel's.

Haven't had Tacos A Go Go in forever. Is it any good these days?

Also saw that Candente is taking over Mandito's in Bellaire. That should be an upgrade for sure.

Meh.

It will make parking at my gym worse, for sure.

I haven't been in years...and just thought it was okay the few times I'd been previously. But happy to have another food and drink option on 11th.

I kind of figured they'd tear the whole center down and go more vertical once Lola closed.

I grab some breakfast tacos from the one on White Oak occasionally.

They've been looking for a new space in the Heights for over two years now. They approached us about our building on White Oak, but the buildout to do a restaurant was too cost-prohibitive for them with the layout.

Were they talking to yall about leasing your place? I used to get similar calls about my building but it's been a while... Feeling kind of left out...

Yes. It was shortly before we decided to break ground on the cigar lounge

Anything would be an upgrade over Mandito's. That place was overpriced and mediocre.

The owner was very particular about restoring that building to its original art deco appearance and keeping it. Also, the Planning Commission has been hesitant to approve higher density redevelopment on smaller lots in the middle of neighborhoods. Just recently they denied an application for a mid-rise redevelopment where Khun Kay Thai is because the proposal was too dense for the neighborhood.

Good to know! I like the building/property and would prefer it stay as is. Just thought the lot size, visibility and traffic count might dictate otherwise. But I don't know *****

agreed. They did revise the menu with more reasonable prices but the damage was done.

The chips and salsa being the highlight was probably not a great sign.

Looks like something called Los Chilaquiles is moving into the spot that 1891 had. Can't seem to find anything online about them though.

Tacos a go go has gone down hill, but still a solid spot. Fell out of my breakfast taco rotation between taco deli and chiloso's.

I've never been a fan of Tacos A Go Go's breakfast tacos. Way too much egg on them compared to other ingredients. Their Pastor tacos on the other hand are surprisingly great.

And now bad news for the non-fatties.

Not that it was a real "food scene," but Salad and Go is closing all Texas locations effective tomorrow. They just built a bunch of new stores, so maybe they got overextended. I never understood how a drive-through salad place expected to survive, but maybe they saw the success of Salata and tried to give it a fast food spin.

ETA from a press release last year:
Quote:

Rounding the bend on a successful 2023, CEO Charlie Morrison has aggressive plans to bring Salad and Go to even more Americans with a goal of continuing to open nearly a store per week in 2024.

"2023 was a year of exceptional growth, but 2024 will be a breakout year for Salad and Go," promises Morrison. "We have the right offering and the right team at the right time. We are at an inflection point in this country where Americans are demanding more from restaurant chains. They shouldn't have to compromise on fresh, nutritious food that's also convenient and affordable."

I really liked the one by my house. It was good and reasonably priced. I will miss it. Sucked eating in the truck, but whatever. I didn't see this coming.

Agree on it being good and reasonably priced. A $8 salad or wrap was plenty for me.

I'm surprised they made it as long as they did. The one on Shepherd just north of the loop never had a single car there anytime I drove by it.
