I know it's only March, but in terms of reinforcements in the summer, the rumours that the Liverpool journalists are hearing/putting out is that we are expected to invest heavily this summer. (I feel like I hear this every other window, so I'll believe it when I see it.)
My gut now tells me that VvD is the only one that re-signs with Liverpool. I am 50-50 on Salah, but I think he is now closer to leaving than staying. And TAA has had his eye on the exit door since at least December.
I would expect Kelleher to stop playing nice and force an exit, and rightfully so. We probably fetch 20-25M GBP for him.
I personally love Joe Gomez. I think he is a great versatile defender when fit. But that is his problem, he is never fit. Knowing our luck, the second we sell him, he will string 20+ months without an injury and be an England regular. I would demand 40-45M GBP for his services. (Newcastle were offering 45M GBP last summer).
If we could get 15M GBP for Endo, I'd sell him too and let Bajcetic (who has been playing quite well in Spain) fill that role.
I continue to have mixed feelings on Darwin. But it really does feel like his days on Merseyside are numbered. He is still young, turning 26 in the summer, so I would expect a fee of somewhere in the 50-55M GBP range for him to see the exit. (Saudi apparently came in in January and offered 60M+ GBP for him).
I would think we bring a LB so one of Robbo or Tsimikas would need to make way for him. I think 20-25M GBP for either of them would be good. Keep the other as cover.
I would then also expect us to sell a few of our players that have been out on loan like Rhys Williams, Nat Phillips (finally) as well as the odd youngster or two like James McConnell or Trent Kone-Doherty that should fetch another 10-15M GBP total.
My favoured incomings would be Bournemouth's 21 year old LB Kerkez (30M), 19 year old CB Dean Huijsen (40M), Ajax's 18 year old CB/FB Jorrel Hato (30M), Brighton's 21 year old CM Carlos Baleba (35M), and Alexander Isak (110M).
In an ideal world, our departures would fetch a total of ~160-165M GBP. The above incomings would cost ~245M. So an investment of 80-85M GBP would be required from FSG to revamp this squad and provide reinforcements to the back line where we always seem to have injuries and in the midfield where we need players that Slot actually trusts to rotate in and give breaks to our midfield three. And if Salah does indeed go, we'd need to replace his goal contribution output (an admittedly impossible task), but the only player I would want in world football at the moment would be Isak at Newcastle (and if you believe the internet, he would try to force his way out of Tyneside if they don't get CL football next season. So root for whoever plays Newcastle the rest of the way).
What I would want our 2025-2026 roster to look like (without Salah
):
GKs: Alisson Becker, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Vitezslav Jaros
RBs: Conor Bradley, Calvin Ramsey
CBs: VvD, Ibou Konate, Dean Huijsen, Jorrel Hato, Jarell Quansah
LBs: Andy Robertson or Kostas Tsimikas, Milos Kerkez
CMs: Carlos Baleba, Dominik Szoboszlai. Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, Curtis Jones, Stefan Bajcetic, Tyler Morton
LW: Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo
CF: Alexander Isak, Diogo Jota
RW: Federico Chiesa, Harvey Elliott, Ben Doak
As always, thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
What a difference two months can make.
PREMIER LEAGUE CHAMPIONS!! With all the competitions we are involved in settled from a Liverpool perspective, the focus now turns to the summer.
Salah and
VvD are staying and
TAA has decided to seek pastures anew. I thank Trent for his service to Liverpool Football Club and wish him a miserable career at Real Madrid. Rumors have surfaced that Madrid would want TAA for the dumb money-grabbing and ill-timed Club World Cup that starts in June. TAA's contract ends June 30. So Madrid would have to pay us to cut his contract short. I would play hardball and milk that for all it is worth. Anything over 2-3 Million would be nice.
Contracts expiring in 2026 are
Ibou Konate,
Caoimhin Kelleher,
Andy Robertson, and
Vitezslav Jaros. Konate is obviously the most important one with the 25 year old shaping out to be a world-class defender. The snakes at Real Madrid seem determined to continue their practice of convincing the world's elite players to run down their contract and sign for them on a free. And Konate appears to be their next target. Hughes and FSG have reportedly offered him a contract back in December and he is stalling. We cannot let another player leave on a free. We have made a bad habit of this in recent years (
Ox,
Firmino,
Keita,
Wijnaldum,
Milner, etc) and it's time it ends. Apply pressure on Konate and get him to sign a contract. Otherwise, sell him. I would bet he could fetch a price tag of 70M+.
Kelleher has earned the chance to be a No.1 and
Alisson isn't going anywhere. Plus,
Mamardashvili seems poised to be the new No. 2. Sell Kelleher this summer.
Robbo, on the other hand, is tricky. My heart loves him and the energy and camaraderie he brings to the team. Maybe get him to sign a one year extension? Otherwise, it might be time to move on from him. Especially if
Kerkez is brought in. We do not need 3 LBs. Selling Robbo or
Tsimikas would be the correct decision, imo.
Vitezslav Jaros seems content to be the No. 3. He is still 23. I'd extend him for another year or two. Unless you can sign some veteran there.
My favoured incomings remain largely the same with Bournemouth's 21 year old LB
Kerkez looking increasingly likely to be the summer's first signing. Leverkusen's 24 year old RB
Jeremie Frimpong also seems like a no brainer with a release clause rumored to be in the 30-35M range. He ticks so many boxes, plus would be a homegrown player since he came through the Man City Academy. I am still a big fan of 19 year old CB
Dean Huijsen. Madrid also seem interested but they are also looking at
William Saliba. So if they can pry him away from London, I like our chances of signing the young Spaniard. Brighton's 21 year old CM
Carlos Baleba would be the CM signing I would chase. Stuttgart's 24 year old CM
Angelo Stiller is the other midfielder we seem to be consistently linked with. I don't know much about him, but my gut says to go with the player who has already proven himself capable of handling the Premier League. And then there's the small task of addressing the front line. The dream signing, of course, is
Alexander Isak. But his price tag may keep him up at Tyneside for a while longer. We are desperately missing a speedy finisher. Salah would easily have already eclipsed 20 assists for the season if he we had a poacher.
Hugo Ekitike, Benjamin Sesko, and
Viktor Gyökeres seem to be the strikers that everyone in football is linked to. Other than Gyokeres racking up the goals in Portugal, I do not know much about this trio. But we do need someone who can bang out 17-20+ goals in a season and that player (not named Salah) is not currently on our roster.
Regular Liverpool FC journalists continue to put out there that FSG is willing to spend big this summer to provide Arne Slot with reinforcements.
But how many times have we heard this before? We don't have any stadium plans, training facility upgrades, etc to fund so we may actually have a sizeable transfer budget. But, as always, I'll believe it when I see it.
Sell
Kelleher,
Darwin Nuñez,
Endo,
Tsimikas, (
Konate if he doesn't want to sign an extension), and handful of academy players (see above) to hopefully add 100-175+M to the transfer budget. Give Slot the depth he needs to compete on all four fronts and, with some luck, bring at least two trophies to Anfield next season.
