In hindsight, and guys on scuffed discussed it this week, starting Zimmerman and removing a midfielder would have suited us well.

Also, we knew we weren't gonna have the ball so why not plan around that and defend and counter.

I don't care if it's not sexy you have to be variable and adjust to conditions and match ups. If Poch can't do that and just insists on his style be damned we're cooked.

Fox hyping up the mexican crowd of course. And of course you knew it'd be huge. But this is a much larger issue with US Soccer.

The hype machine has been in blast for 20 years to get people interested and never broke through to anything seriously challenging on the world stage. The WC is coming to the US and the key people you need to help bring the hype to a tournament like this to deserve fan support felt it was beneath them.

What has happened to go from begging on hands and knees to care about you for years to being too good for it.

Oh well. Thanks to the guys that showed up.

As far as soccer as come in the US, it's still 4th at best of the big 5 sports. Even people who like soccer are also big fans of the other 4 sports. For every other country in the world, outside of Canada, it's the number 1 choice for athletes and for fans. It's where fans will spend their most time and money. Americans are still prioritizing other sports for their discretionary spending.

Yup in recent years the focus is on Nations League, but this more of C/D level club than B/C in the past. We really needed this to be an A level squad to gel with Poch, but USSF wasted 2 years by rehiring GGG.

Yep. Given the disaster of the 2 years following the last WC and the lack of any qualifying pressure next year, this should have been an A/B+ squad. They needed to learn to play together in a hostile environment. And they needed a long camp with Poch. They didn't use this time well at all.

I dig these us shorts. I wish they'd put pockets on the fan version. I have a couple pairs from older kits and they're great gym shorts, minus the no pockets, ehich basically makes them unwearable for anything but pajamas

And those of you all buthurt over this result probably brace yourself for more disappointment next year, I don't think either squad is any good.
Mexico had many of their first team players start while US had 2, maybe 3?

I thought both teams had basically 2-3 starters play?
Mexico had 7 starters carryover from Nations League play.

I don't have high hopes for next summer, which is sad given the talent level this roster has. But there's no Howard or Dempsey to lead this squad, Pulisic is doing it be default but he's not that guy.

Agreed and Club World Club didn't help either. We could have Weston, Weah, Gio, and Gaga play on this squad which would have helped immensely to pull together an A squad.

I get why Pulisic wanted time off, but his Milan teammate Santi Gimenez wanted to play and was ready to rub it in his and Musah's faces about beating them.

I know this is going to be controversial but watching Mexico, in arms as teammates, singing their anthem...I knew we were cooked.

Our soccer team will never have that comraderie and it makes me a little sad.

The 2nd MEX goal was a good call. He was onside and the VAR made the right call.

This one they blew. That's 100% handling. The ball can hit your support arm. You can't support yourself on the ball and it's not your support arm if you stumble.

My wife and I attended, glad we went although I thought it was terribly organized in comparison to the Austin venue.. Pyrotechnics prior to the game and it was smoke filled the entire game. Hardly any replays were shown

I'm not a ref but being it was his plant arm and it wasn't giving an advantage in terms of blocking a shot/pass or batting the ball away from an opponent, I think no foul.

Edit - and that's why I should have waited for MathGuy to respond

I think we have pointed out most of the negatives.

On the positive, I did see quite a bit of growth from this squad. I don't really care about most of this group, but I am encouraged that the coach can actually seem to improve the team fairly quickly. Not saying there wasn't a lot more room to grow, but it is nice to see Poch can coach.
Max Barfsten showed maybe the most growth. He was not good at the start of this window. He was ok tonight.
Old man Ream might just have enough to play next summer. I hope somebody comes along and unseats him, but if not, he still has some in the tank.
Richards is good in the air.

Realistically, I think berhalter, Richards, freese, Luna and Tillman are the only players based on this tournament's play that should be anywhere close to competing for WC roster spots.

I'm still mindblown that agyemang played til the end. He's nothing more than a penalty threat. Those 2 gimme goals he was luckily handed deep in the box, only to trip over his own feet twice will be in my nightmares tonight

I get it not being called, but when it's that clear and obvious it's also really tough to see it and not have a pretty visceral reaction.

But he didn't gain an advantage, didn't play the ball, didn't change its course. But I mean, look at it!

65% Mexican fans. They were also noticeably louder. So their presence was greater.

It felt like 85% Mexico. I really didn't even see US gear being sold, only Mexico. In Austin US gear was everywhere

Then f'ing learn it. It's not that hard.

As much as I think Marsch is a choad...he would have had these guys bonded a hell of a lot more I think and made sure they knew the anthem.

Soft skill thing but don't tell me it doesn't matter at all. Not a lot, but that stuff does have intangible affects.

Linking arm and arm to sing the national anthem is not something anyone in the history of the national team has ever done, and its not something we do in this country.
I don't really get the players, in any sport, that stand silently you can at least mouth the words if you feel like you cant sing.

But the players on the field tonight fought hard, thats not really a criticism that rings true to me. It wasnt an effort or heart issue

About the only true statement you have made tonight. Everyone is supposed to celebrate their heritage without fault…except Americans.
