What was great to see was that he probably wasn't having the game he expected to have, then still comes up with the winning play. Down by 1, huge weak side block (the part of his game we all know he has) then runs the break and makes the right read leaving off for Nembhard.

I was at like 90% confidence that Nembhard shot was going in. He just has it. Such a gamer.

I was encouraged. He looked good. He's 18. Other than his shooting % there wasn't much to be critical of. His shots will fall. Plus he's going to have a lot of weapons around him and not have to do so much iso.

I like that they let Flagg, Nembhard, and Kelly play a ton of minutes. Those guys are clearly the cream of the crop.

I know they've said Flagg will only play 2 games, I wonder if they are thinking the same for Nembhard and Miles Kelly. That group took like 60% of the shots this game.

Would be unfortunate because the games will be unwatchable without Nembhard.

I thought Flagg was very impressive…and he's only 18! Imagine with another 4-5 years of physical maturity…

Most players like him come into the league on a lousy team, and would get to be the focus on offense without any real expectations around winning…but he's getting dropped into a deep roster that does have playoff goals. I wonder if that will be good for his development, or hinder it.

Flagg looked like he was headed toward a similar shooting performance in game 2 until the fourth quarter. He still almost willed the summer team back with putrid shooting across the board. But that's it for his summer. He still looked like a man amongst boys against people way older than him! Hard not to get excited to see how he does this coming season.

Carter Bryant looks like the real deal as a defender and guarded Flag most of the game. Pretty bad on offense though lol. Flagg has drawn several tough defenders over these two games, and he's the sole focus of the defense. You can also see that guys were cherishing the moment when defending and giving everything they could knowing who he is.

Flagg had an early turnover on a dribble out of bounds when Bryant was hounding him. Still only ended the game with 2 turnovers, I think. So impressive job to lock in and protect the ball better for the rest of the game. The lack of turnovers despite insane usage and facing crazy ball pressure over the two games is something notable.

His shot isn't terrible, just needs to find more consistency. His load and release isn't consistent and you can tell if it is going to go in or not based on his technique on each shot. His catch and shoot 3 in the 4th quarter was really pretty and you could see everything going right with his body and you knew it was going in.

Overall really impressed with him in the two games. Clearly not in game shape but played a ton of minutes and was the lead ball handler most of his time on the court while consistently drawing the toughest defenders and everybody's attention. he faced NBA-level defensive players while not having NBA-level offensive help on his side.

Really stoked to see him when the games matter after several weeks of practicing with the same NBA players.

We did this every offseason lol. If that's actually what he looks like, then good for him.

The problem was never when he showed up to camp. It was when that first calf strain happens and then he sits around the team for two weeks and collects lbs. He's gotta keep it up during the season and during injury rehab.

I still refuse to engage in Luka ever being "the problem" here in any way.

Maybe go back to my post, read all the words before and after "the problem," and then you'll realize I wasn't saying he was "the problem."

So Cuban went on the DLLS podcast and had some pretty interesting things to say. Particularly when it came to the subject of selling the team. He said he 'regrets' not taking it to market (i would assume because he didn't get fair value), but more importantly, when asked about what changed with his role he basically said the league screwed him?

Watching that clip is insane to me because to me it sounds like he actually believes the terms were altered by the league in a way that tricked him into believing he had control?

Not shocking since this team has way too many PFs (something I don't think I've ever said as a Mavs fan). Hope he gets a great spot to develop.

Cuban is full of ***** He owns 27% of the team. The NBA says they rejected nothing regarding his involvement and there is no reason to. If a team wants to have a minority owner or anyone else involved in ops, they can. He'd have a seat at the table if the Adelsons and their goober son-in-law wanted him to, but reality is that he surrendered majority control to some gambling carpetbaggers who elbowed him out as soon as they could do it. The only certainty is that he/she who holds majority control makes the call on who is involved, and Cuban surrendered that. And he did it for an embarrassingly low price. Sucker

I know it is somewhat more Spurs related, but this will have huge waves throughout the NBA.

Kawhi took a Clippers friendly contract. Then Kawhi got a $28M no show endorsement that terminated if he was ever not on the Clippers for any reason. Steve Ballmer gave $50M to the company that gave kawhi the endorsement.

Pablo got the contracts and interviewed employees that dealt with it.

Ya this is really good reporting by Pablo and could lead to the NBA equivalent of the Death Penalty for the Clippers. I think gambling is #1 on the NBA's 'do not do list' but Cap Circumvention might be a close #2. When you mess with the perceived integrity of the league, there's usually a harsh penalty that follows.

In Mavs related news, PJ Washington agreed to a 4yr 90m extension (which I believe was the max he could get).

Great value for a player squarely in their prime. Mavs will have a pretty substantial cap quagmire to adddress after this season, but overall the players under contract are all fairly movable. I think Kyrie is the only 'toxic' contract we have simply due to his injury.

The real question will be how well Leon Rose hid the endorsements for Brunson. I don't believe for a second everything with him is on the up and up.

Great deal for us to have PJ at that number. I wasn't worried they wouldn't do it, but wondering where PJ's head was at relative to his role on this team. Love that we locked him up and he's going to be here on a good number for both parties.

Contracts are crazy these days. Dirk's largest contract was 4 years/$80 million in 2010.

Haha ya it's the nature of sports. Michael Jordan's career contract earnings was $93m and $60m of that was paid his last couple years in the league.

Idk if anyone here is following the Pablo Torre story about the Clippers circumventing the cap to pay Kawhi through a fraudulent climate change company but it is officially Mavs related because yesterday, Mark Cuban went on the record with Pablo to 'take arms' in defending Ballmer.

I highly encourage anyone to listen to it because I think it breaks the story down into a very digestible analysis of what happened and how plausible it would be fore Ballmer to NOT know Kawhi was being paid for a 'no show' endorsement gig.

I have some takeaways however:
  • I find it strange that Cuban would even do this interview, even if he truly believed Ballmer is innocent. Because I don't see the upside for him inserting himself into the story? Like, he explicitly states that he and Ballmer aren't close friends and they have no business dealings outside of their NBA interactions. So I don't really understand why Cuban is...exposing himself to what will be NBA investigation when he has no skin in the game? I'll chalk it up to Cuban's ego and wanting to be in the headlines anytime he can.
  • Pablo really gives it to Cuban. Cuban's entire defense of Ballmer hinges on plausible deniability. That Ballmer invested in this company because there was an honest opportunity to make money for a good cause. That he gave $50m of his own personal money to people he didn't ever meet face to face because he trusted the due diligence of his own team to which Pablo simply replies: "Have you ever given $50m to people you've never met?" and there is a very pregnant pause before Cuban has to admit; "No, I've never given $50m to anyone I've never met."
  • Cuban later in the pod goes on to explain how he has been the victim of MULTIPLE scams (as a defense of Ballmer - "See it happened to me! It could happen to anyone!"). My reaction to these admissions:

  • Beyond the scope of the Aspiration deal, the part I didn't remember was back in 2015 when the Mavs had struck a verbal agreement with Deandre Jordan before he re-negged to sign back with the Clippers is apparently Ballmer was fined $250k by the NBA for offering a Lexus sponsorship to Jordan as an ancillary benefit to re-upping (another cap circumvention manuveur). So like, Ballmer was already caught doing something EXACTLY like this deal.
Based on Pablo's reporting, breakdown of events, and Ballmer's history of cap circumvention, I have to admit it beggars belief that Ballmer didn't know about any of this and the Clippers won't be severely punished.
