At midnight tonight, the NBA league year officially changes and '26 begins! It was an....interesting year for the Mavericks who went from the NBA Finals to the lottery in the span of 9 months. Prior to winning the lottery 6 weeks ago, this past season would undoubtedly have been remembered as the year Nico Harrison made 1 of the most shocking (or terrible) trades in all of sports history, but the Mavs leaping into the #1 pick pushes at least some of that controversy to the sideline.

I'll admit, many Mavs fans (including myself) were all but ready to pack away our fandom for the next decade+. Anecdotally, every single person I sat around in my section of season ticket holders had cancelled or opted out of their renewal after the trade. The Luka revenge game in April felt like a funeral party as the final buzzer rang and everyone took a moment to take 1 last look before the anticipated long hibernation.

This season was filled with injuries and frustration and I wouldn't blame any Mavs fans for still harboring resentment towards a certain GM....BUT as they say, the night is darkest just before the dawn and the sun rose with Cooper Flagg. Hope is restored even if the blight of Nico remains.

Looking forward, the Mavs actually have reason for optimism. A healthy starting lineup of:
Kyrie
Klay
Flagg
PJ
Lively <-(oops, meant to put AD lol)

Is without a doubt a Finals contender. "Health" is the obvious limiting factor.
  • How long will it take for Kyrie to regain form? Without his dynamic shot creation, this team is at best a 1st round exit (unless Flagg is Lebron 2.0 right away).
  • How many games can we rely on AD? Klay is obviously not a paragon of health either.

The path for this team is narrow...but there is a path.

And more importantly, that path extends well into the future with the unlikely (or perhaps 'rigged') addition of Cooper Flagg.

Lets get this started.

Looking forward to July 10 to see how Flagg looks, maybe even at the 1.

I'm in full cope mode on that one, but Slightly Biased pointed out that his on/off numbers are quite favorable over the past 4 seasons. Basically, he's been on pretty bad teams, that are better when he's on the floor. And then make sure you have enough rotation players by the playoffs to where you don't need him lol.

Did you intentionally leave AD out of the starting lineup?

Anybody following this LeBron stuff? Apparently he may ask out and ask for Dallas. I'm not sure I'm in on that with what it would cost in depth.

lmao i honestly did not. I meant to put AD at 5 and even my subconscious brain wouldn't allow it.

No butt can be properly prepared for a Kyrie-Flagg-PJ-AD-Lively starting lineup. We'll be playing every game 85-80 lol.

In former Mav news, the Rockets are stealing DFS from the Lakers. Lakers expected to sign Ayton as their "rim protector." That perimeter defense with Luka, Reaves, LeBron, and Rui is going to be buns.

Looks like it's mostly coming from Jovan Buha, who covers the Lakers.

Bron wants to compete for one more and he knows he can't carry fat players to the title at 42yo.

Rich Paul put out a statement yesterday when Bron opted in that made it seem like Bron isn't happy

Wants a trade but his 54M contract is so difficult to trade.

Klay+Gaff+PJ is 7.4M more money coming back to Dallas, which may be hard to fit under Aprons.

This is what is so annoying about the league recently. If you don't want to be in LA then you shouldn't have opted in to your contract. Odds are he stays in LA anyway, but it's just so dumb what this is now.

It isn't even smart if you want to go to a new team. Now your new team will have to gut their depth to accommodate a move for you, decreasing the likelihood of a championship.

This would be such a LeBron super friends moment as he gets to reunite with Kyrie and AD (old super friends) and groom a new member in Cooper Flagg.

Seriously though a lineup of

Lively
AD
Bron
Flagg
Kyrie

Would be a really good lineup on paper, but it's assuming a lot that they'd all be healthy at playoff time and that they'd have any depth behind those guys.

ETA also hilarious for the Lakers to now become basically the Mavs roster.

Yeah that lineup would actually take the court for maybe 20 games due to health issues.
Anyway LeBron is not coming to Dallas.

Uhh…this might have some seismic implications with nearly every 1st apron team.

Really really big deal. Contracts, especially max contracts, generally increase by 8% each year.

4 for 53 for Dodo to Houston. He has a very small sample size of good 3 point shooting on non-Luka teams. Houston won't have a ton of space either. Interesting bet for them, doubling down on really good defense.

He's no spring chicken, either. He will fit well, but already 32. That defense is only going to decline.

But kills the Lakers. They don't have a single competent defender.

Denver acquiring Cam Johnson for MPJ and a 2032 first. Opens up a lot of cap space for them.

West stays tough.

And Denver just used the cap space to sign Bruce Brown… 2023 championship regen team…

Player option in hear2, so he'll be a Mav for 2 years, surely.

Bro, Kornet to the Spurs… Pretty nice backup big man to have. West is getting brutal.

If true, this is such a bush-league move by Pelinka. And yet, based on some of the quotes that came out after the Luka trade and the return we got, it sounds like this tactic worked on Nico:

HOLY **** - They're stretch waiving $113m contract?! That's gonna cost the bucks $23m/yr for 5 years for Dame to NOT play.

I thought stretch/waiving Javale McGee's contract was bad but MIL said 'hold my beer'

How does that work for Lillard when another team picks him up? Can they sign him for whatever they want or are there restrictions? Do the Bucks still owe him the rest of the contract, regardless of who and how much he signs for?

NBA contracts confuse the heck out of me.

Yep, he's an Unrestricted Free Agent and can sign for any amount someone is willing to offer.

Bucks owe him the rest regardless.

New contract does not offset Bucks obligation

How does Milwaukee not run every major decision by Giannis? This isn't the Lakers allowing LeBron to be a terrible GM for them by demanding they get Westbrook. You're a small market team with a legendary player. How is every decision not made with him at front of mind?
