They'll definitely end up holding onto everyone way longer than they should and getting no value for the aging guys.

What a disaster.

Or worse, triple down and move more assets for 'win now' players

Another tough L vs NO. Again, with D Live or AD Mavs absolutely win. Get these dudes some stem cells!
Cooper with a strong 20 point, 9 rebound outing. 2 blocks, 3 steals.

Call me a masochist, but I am still hopeful about what this team can do IF, big IF healthy.

Hold the rope, boys!

As long as he's hitting 29% from three the return is going to be a worse contract

Yeah, he's got to play well enough to make a contender think he can help them or he'll bring very little in return

He could still be somewhat useful on a team with playmakers. Hes worthless in a team with no playmakers.

So he will have no value whatsoever bc it's impossible for him to turn it around on this team. Hes reliant on playmakers, which we have 0 of.

Battered Mavs Syndrome says he goes to the Spurs and shoots 45% from 3 on route to a championship.

Cuban gave us a decade plus of great basketball and delivered a championship.
Selling the team in the manner he did to the people he did definitely sours that some, from the past 2 of years of they have done..and what they are attempting to do with the arena now

I hope this city gives them nothing. It's still unconscionable. It feels like the entire team is checked out too. Feel bad for PJ and Lively and Gafford. Klay got sold a bill of goods. This can't burn down fast enough.

Huge road win in the nations capital. We needed that!
Naji with 30 off the bench. Another double double for PJ.
Let's get a streak going!

Critical home stand coming up. Going 1-3 or 0-4 with boo's coming down and "Fire Nico" chants may end this before next week. That is step one which we need ASAP. The second step is the AD trade request. The earlier that comes in the more time you have to make that trade.

ugh scanning the NBA landscape, there's simply no obvious trade partner for AD. Contenders that could use a PF
would have a hard time matching AD's insane salary:
  • SA
  • Miami
and teams that have the salaries wouldn't want AD:
  • Warriors
The ONLY team I could see trading for AD would be Philly if they wanted to move off Embiid. Why?
1) Just for grins - It'd be funny as hell to see the 2 most injury prone players swapped for each other.
2) AD is 1 year older but his contract expires 1 year sooner than Embiid's.

From the Mavs POV, it would obviously not make much sense and just rearranging deck chairs on the titanic. I think Philly would have to give some sort of draft comp to entice Dallas into this (maybe a 2030 1st? idk). Otherwise, I don't see a single team in the NBA that would want AD or could execute a trade for AD. I think you'd have to wait until the summer and hope a team with cap space would want to take him (Chicago perhaps?).

Yeah, I don't expect much of any return at all. With AD you obviously know he isn't playing 82 games. That would drive the price way down. A team like SA taking a flyer on AD + Wemby would be intriguing, but do they have enough salary filler coming back to not hurt the team? I think that is the question that a lot of teams would have to ask themselves. Having AD on your team is intriguing but due to risk I wouldn't want to give up much draft compensation or any key rotation players. It's going to make for a **** return.

Regardless of who they trade with, the Mavs will effectively lost Luka for nothing.

Ya that's why i classified SA as a team that wouldn't match his salary. They'd have to give up at least 3 player contracts which would make no sense for them. A PF upgrade for them is something they probably want, but don't need.

Yeah, Spurs wouldn't do it because of AD's age. Financially, you could do Vassell+Harrison Barnes (ending contract) but the Mavs can't do that.

Dumping AD becomes one of three things: who is trying to make a run this year and need a boost and who wants to dump worse contracts and who can't ever bring in a star.

With his continual injuries and turning 33 this year, there isn't going to be a fair market deal for him with any team.

Trades below are financially feasible, not necessarily what the final outcome would be (picks being a major part)

Teams that might want to make a run right now:

Detroit could do something with Jaden Ivey, Ron Holland, and Tobias (ending contract.) They also own all their picks.

Chicago could do Collins, Huerter (both ending contracts), Coby White and Ayo D for Anthony Davis, Caleb Martin and Jaden Hardy. Bulls also own all their picks.

Cleveland is aproned.

Clippers are awful but have to try to win because OKC owes their next two picks to OKC for Paul George and the two after to Philly for James Harden. Move on from the Kawhi drama? Or would that make everything worse? Davis for Kawhi saves a lot of money for Dallas.

--------------

Players teams want to get rid of:

NOLA: Zion+Saddiq Bey+Alvarado. Hilarious to send AD back to NOLA. NOLA qualifies as "cant attract talent" and also "has a problem player to dump"

ATL: Trae straight up works. Trae can opt out after this season, but he is still involved at OU.

CHA: LaMelo Ball. I don't think this really makes sense, but they could do Ball+filler (Josh Green welcome back?).

PHI: You already said Embiid, but yeah. PG13, too. They have picks. They own their own next year and Clippers in 28 and 29.

MEM: Ja + KCP for AD+Hardy or Martin works financially.

MIA: Rozier+Herro for AD+Martin back to Miami works financially. AD+BAM+Davion would be an insane defensive core. And defense wins championships.

Teams that can't attract stars:

Brooklyn: They aren't going to screw up their cap space, but they could send MPJ+young talent and picks

Toronto: Quickley+RJ Barrett for AD+Hardy works and they have picks. But they will have play creation issues again.

Washington: You could do something around CJ McCollum, Khris Middleton (both ending contracts) or both. They also have picks and swap rights all over plus young players. CJ, Kyshawn, and Kispert works financially.

Utah: Markkanen+Isaiah Collier for Davis+Hardy works financially and saves Dallas $11M.

Kings: Something around LaVine could work. Have a Sabonis/Davis front court. Kings are as inept as Nico, so maybe Nico can pretend he is selling shoes to get it in their heads that shooting loses championships.

Suns: Phoenix could work something around Jalen Green, but they have no picks to trade. Green+Brooks or Allen works financially.

Portland: Jrue is having a resurgence, but his contract is awful. They could add something to him to make him work.

So like I said, you aren't going to feel good about anything that can be done.

All of this analysis makes it even funnier that this move was sold as a "win now" trade by Nico and Patrick Dumont. 1 year later and you can't pay other teams to take AD and his contract.

I wanted to go through and see where salaries would work. There are things that could work and make the Mavs better if you take into account that AD is going to spend 40 games in street clothes.
