With the draft now just 40 days away (July 13th - 14th), we should start to see a lot more projections, mock drafts, prospect lists etc. I thought I'd lump everything to watch out for in one post. Ty Hodge (2022 Aggie INF) - FA
Lucas Kelly (2023 Aggie P) - Pick #182

The draft will consist of 20 rounds for the fifth year in a row. Rounds 1-10 have an assigned slot value per spot and rounds 11-20 have a maximum slot value of $150,000 each. A team can pay above or below slot value if the player and team agree, but if a team does not sign a player taken anywhere in the first 10 rounds, that slot value is forfeited and cannot be used towards other players. A player taken in rounds 11-20 can sign for any amount, but anything over $150,000 will reduce that team's pool of money. Because of these rules, players taken in the first 10 rounds are usually going to sign 99% of the time. This also leads to teams utilizing senior signs in the latter half of the first 10 rounds to free up slot value money to pay for other signees.

Even with a down year, Jace LaViolette should break Braden Montgomery's record for highest drafted position player in A&M history going somewhere in the 8-12 overall pick spot; Montgomery was taken 12th overall in 2024. Wyatt Henseler and Gavin Kash should be taken somewhere in the later draft rounds by teams looking to free up cap space for other signees. Kash's pedigree prior to A&M should have him on some teams' radars.

I think we will see Justin Lamkin and Shane Sdao taken towards the end of day 1 (Round 3) or beginning of day 2 followed by Ryan Prager in a 4-5th round spot. Shane did enough prior to his injury at the end of 2024 to garner 3rd round consideration by some teams. Kaeden Kent has been rumored to be signable and lots of teams love MLB bloodlines; I would see him going around the 6th round on day 2. Ben Royo and Myles Patton are also names to watch and each would depend on their asking price to see their names picked.

It must be a coincidence that all of our best bullpen arms this year are draft eligible sophomores. I would love to see Weston Moss back as a Friday night starter, but I think he has done enough to garner a good signing bonus. Kaiden Wilson would also be a name I would sweat out as his stuff seemed to come together towards the end of the year; I think he would be a good candidate to use his leverage to come back for a junior year and jump up the prospect rankings.

There are quite a few high school recruits that are among various Top 200 lists of either draft candidates or high school prospects with a good number having participated in various 16U and 18U Team USA stints. Johnny Slawinski and Josiah Hartshorn are probably the top 2 names to watch for as both could go on day 1 of the draft. Brauny has hinted that Slawinski is ready to start his pro career. Chase Bentley, Luke Billings, Blaine Bullard, Jake Evans, Boston Kellner, Nico Partida, and David Ramirez are the other names to watch during the draft. Getting 7 of those guys to campus would be a phenomenal job, but 6 would also be a great haul for Earley and crew. Partida could be a two-way player should he make it to campus.

For the "Other Names to Follow", the majority are guys that were at A&M that mainly suffered through injuries that derailed their career here. All seemed to have had bounce back seasons at their respective schools and could be later round considerations. Ty Hodge has had a decent season at UTSA and just finished ending t.u.'s season in the regionals.

What to look forward to next year:

Gavin Grahovac has already stated that he isn't going anywhere along with Josh Stewart. If we can get confirmation from Caden Sorrell, the lineup will have a solid 1-2 punch if healthy. Add to them Terrence Kiel II, Bear Harrison, and improved versions of Blake Binderup and Sawyer Farr, and the pieces are there to have a solid lineup. I would love to see Moss and Gavin Lyons as the anchors to our starting rotation along with veteran Myles Patton, but we could be looking more towards portal additions to fill out the rotation. The freshmen arms should have a couple of guys able to jump into various roles if they can adapt to the grind of the SEC as they all have talent. A bullpen of Stewart, Freshcorn, Jackson, and Wilson would be a solid foundation to begin the season.

I've got a good source on Slawinski. He loves CS and it would take a pretty big number to match what he'd make here. It's looking like that may happen, but from what I was told he wants to come to school. I'll ask and see if I can find anything new out.

Brauny has a thread in premium on possible visits from portal players and names to watch out for. Since it is behind a paywall, I would only add names to the list above from commitments.

Not looking great. They're hearing he could be a top 30 pick.

MLB Top 200 Prospects

Quote:

15. Jace LaViolette

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 65 | Run: 55 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 55

Few high schoolers in the 2022 class could match LaViolette's combination of physicality and athleticism, but swing-and-miss concerns left teams hesitant to buy him out of his Texas A&M commitment. A down junior season ended his chances to become the first four-year college outfielder to go No. 1 overall since Darin Erstad in 1995, but he's still one of the best college position players available. He set a school freshman record with 21 homers in 2023 before going deep 29 times and leading Texas A&M to the Men's College World Series Finals last year.

Possessing as much raw power as anyone in the Draft, LaViolette is built to crush balls with a quick left-handed stroke, the strength and leverage in his impressive 6-foot-6 frame and a focus on launching pitches to his pull side. He also makes quality swing decisions and established an Aggies record with 64 walks in 68 games last spring. The lone flaw in his offensive game does scare some teams, however, because he frequently swings and misses within the strike zone, even on fastballs.

Remarkably athletic for his size, LaViolette posts solid run times out of the batter's box and is even quicker once he gets going. He played the outfield corners as a freshman before moving to center field last spring, with most evaluators projecting him to spend the bulk of his big league career in right. His power and solid arm strength fit the right-field profile to a tee.

63. Johnny Slawinski

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 50 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 50 | Overall: 50

Johnson City HS, located in a tiny Texas town of 2,000 an hour west of Austin, never has produced a professional baseball player nor a single pick in the first 60 Drafts. That should change in July with Slawinski, whose combination of projectability and polish makes him one of the top prep left-handers available. He's easily the best pitching prospect in the Lone Star State and projects to go in the first two rounds.

Slawinski currently deals at 90-93 mph and touches 95 with a fastball that plays better than its velocity thanks to its riding action and the quality extension he creates. He uses two different breaking balls, with his upper-70s slider flashing two-plane depth and showing the potential to become a plus offering with more consistency than his mid-70s curveball. He also exhibits nice feel for a low-80s changeup with significant fade.

A four-sport athlete (baseball, football, basketball, track), Slawinski gets down the mound exceptionally well with advanced control for a high schooler. The Texas A&M recruit is also a talented left-handed hitter with plus speed, though his future unquestionably lies on the mound. Once he fills out his 6-foot-3 frame and benefits from the coaching and technology available in pro ball, he could have three plus pitches.
Quote:

106. Josiah Hartshorn

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 45 | Arm: 45 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

California's Orange Lutheran High School has had three first-round picks over the years, most recently Mikey Romero in 2022. OLu's best player in the 2025 class is Hartshorn, who isn't in first-round conversations yet, but certainly raised his profile by showing off some serious offensive upside on the summer showcase circuit and continuing to post during his senior season.

When healthy, Hartshorn is a talented switch-hitter with ability from both sides of the plate. A left-handed thrower, he actually hit only right-handed for nearly all of his first three years in high school because an issue in his left elbow made it hard for him to swing lefty. But then a back issue made hitting right-handed, a more consistent and easier swing, too difficult near the end of his junior season, so he brought the lefty swing back. It was clunky at first, but while you don't want to put too much stock in a home run derby, the fact he found his lefty swing enough to share in the MLB High School Derby win was impressive. He's back to hitting from both sides now, with a solid overall approach and some feel for it, an understanding of the zone and raw power he can get to from either side.

It will largely be the run-producing potential of Hartshorn's bat that will get him drafted, though he was moving around better than expected in the outfield during his senior season. He moves well for someone his size with a little sneaky speed, with more conviction he can handle an outfield corner, even though his arm that used to throw up to 94 mph off the mound is still coming back from that elbow issue. The good news is his offensive profile could be impressive enough for the Texas A&M recruit to go in the first three rounds.
Quote:

110. Justin Lamkin

Scouting grades: Fastball: 50 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 55 | Overall: 45

Lamkin was Texas' best high school southpaw in 2022, when he threw a seven-inning, 21-strikeout no-hitter and drew some Kris Bubic comparisons, but he was unsignable away from his Texas A&M commitment. He became an immediate contributor for the Aggies and dominated in his first two outing at the 2024 College World Series before running out of gas in a championship-game loss to Tennessee. Slightly improved stuff and better control have made him one of the best college pitchability lefty options in this year's Draft.

Lamkin works with a 91-93 mph fastball that tops out at 95, deceiving hitters thanks to his funky arm action and the extension that he creates. His best offering is a solid low-80s slider with more depth than horizontal action. His low-80s changeup doesn't have much life and isn't particularly effective against right-handers, whom he keeps in check by running his heater in on their hands.

While Lamkin doesn't have the smoothest mechanics, they help him hide the ball well. His strike throwing has improved throughout his time in College Station, though his control stands out more than his command. His floor also is more notable than his ceiling, as he's a safe bet to become a back-of-the-rotation starter.
Quote:

113. Shane Sdao

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 60 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 55 | Overall: 45

Sdao had the best stuff on Texas A&M's 2024 College World Series runner-up team and looked like a lock to go in the top three rounds of this year's Draft. But he injured his elbow in the Super Regionals and when rehab didn't cure him, he had Tommy John surgery last fall. Despite missing the entire season, he still might command a seven-figure bonus.

Before he got hurt, Sdao worked at 92-94 mph and reached 97 with a fastball that carried past bats up in the zone. His best offering was a sweeping low-80s slider that carved up both lefties and righties. His mid-80s changeup featured some sink but will need improvement to become an average pitch.

Though Sdao has mid-rotation potential, he has started just seven games in three years of college and worked more than five innings in an outing just twice. His wiry 6-foot-2 frame has more projection remaining and he generates his stuff with arm speed rather than effort. He provides plenty of strikes with all three of his pitches and commands his fastball well.
I think Jace is probably a little low on this list, but that may be my bias showing. I also wonder if Moss being out of the Top 200 bodes well for a return to jump further up the list. I thought his stuff at times this year was better than Sdao's a year ago. A year without mono upsetting the 2nd half of his season may do wonders for him.

Mayo's updated MLB Mock Draft.

13. Giants: Jace LaViolette, OF, Texas A&M (No. 15)
LaViolette has become one of the tougher college bats to place. He has size, power, athleticism and a lot of swing-and-miss.

Moss seems kind of low compared to the production he had last season. 256th puts him towards the end of Round 8. Brauny has mentioned that Sdao could go in the 3rd round based on some reports, so I would not get excited about a 6th round ranking for him; probably should keep that in mind for Moss too, but I have not seen indications that he would go that high. Kent, Patton, and Prager would all be around Round 5 based on those rankings and that seems fair. Hartshorn and Slawinski are the most likely of the incoming freshmen to go early.
