Moss being a starter vs bullpen I don't think is as easy a decision as you make it. Just too much history specifically on the Ags the past few seasons where having very reliable bullpen pitchers were key in winning games.

It costs us several games early this past season when that was not established. We would start next season with a solid guy in the pen if Moss was not moved from there.

You need the progression though. Moss steps up from being "the dude" to a starter and someone like Lyons or McCoy improves upon last year and becomes "the dude" out of the bullpen for this season. Absent that progression, the team would not be in a good spot pitching wise. It would be nice to find another stud starting pitcher and keep Moss in the pen, but year-to-year, you want to see this progression as it makes the club better.

Exactly. Not only that, but we have Stewart coming back from injury, Freshcorn looked massively improved in his last 2-3 outings, and we pulled two transfers in Vargas and Bollinger who were the main bullpen pieces for their respective teams. There are a lot of options to take over in that role.

Appreciate you making this thread as always Mr.Ackar. It's a perfect summation of the draft headlines/results and is great to look back to in future years. Looking forward to see how much our guys got in signing bonuses

I'm not talking about progression. I'm talking about the importance of a solid bullpen guy and how it specifically helped out A&M all three years Schloss was here. Those guys all left A&M as bullpen guys. Never progressed to a consistent starter.

As I pointed out it costs us games last year in the beginning to teams we never should have lost to.

so is it safe to say that MLB clubs & scouts liked the talent on A&M's roster last year?

S&C Coach Jeremy McMillan has a very impressive resume at A&M, having developed 10 Major League Baseball players, several of whom were pitchers.

Yes, but there is a lot of experienced bullpen guys we will have on next year's team that are capable of filling that role. What we don't have is a bunch of returning weekend starters and we will need guys to step into that role. It is reasonable that someone who was competing for that role last year makes the progression into it.

A hefty portion or most weekend starters began their careers as solid bullpen guys before working themselves into that role.

I'll say one more piece before letting it be myself.

My understanding is that you are saying that it is important to have a solid, trusted bullpen arm. I am saying that there are other guys with that experience capable of filling that role. Stewart, Bollinger, Vargas, Freshcorn and Cunningham all are experienced, career bullpen pieces that I expect to eat up a lot of innings next year. That's not to mention younger guys like Lyons, McCoy, Brasseaux and the incoming freshmen/Juco guys capable of taking that step.

Moss, even though he was effective out of the bullpen, was pushing for a starter role this last preseason and fits the bill of a weekend starter better than most. You argue we lost a lot of games late because a lack of a solid bullpen arm, but that argument is two-fold. We remained in games before losing it late in large part because our starting pitching was very effective and kept us in games to the late innings.

I'm not saying it isn't important to have trusted bullpen arms, but that Moss is much more needed in growing into the role of a weekend starter over staying as a long-term reliever because we have much more players suited to and experienced in filling that need.
LB12Diamond

Well

You listing several guys is kind of my point and if that's how's it handled, we will be going into next season just like we did this year. Which did not go well.

If coach were to say Moss was our dedicated best reliever and he's going to focus and be that guy, we would know where we stood right now.

As we have agreed, it's a very important role. I'd prefer not messing with something that was established by the end of this season and one of the few things last year that went well that is coming back.

He transferred to a DII school for the 2025 season because he was out of eligibility according to the NCAA at the time. He appealed his status and was granted an extra year of eligibility that he will use for the 2026 season.

So four of these guys will need to be cut in order to get to the new roster limit of 34, correct?

Or does Marco Jones not count since he is on a football scholarship?

I would assume Marco probably won't play, but we will see. Brauny was mentioning that the Aggies have successfully applied for some waivers (or whatever it is called where a roster spot doesn't count towards your 34 spots), but did not mention how many. This may allow some of the younger guys to stay with the team ang get some time in midweek contests.
