Recruiting Country: The latest recruiting news surrounding the Maroon & White
TexAgs' recruiting analyst Jason Howell joined TexAgs Live on Wednesday morning for another edition of Recruiting Country presented by American Momentum Bank, highlighting the latest news and notes from the recruiting trail surrounding Texas A&M.
Key notes from Recruiting Country interview
- A&M has had a lot of top guys here. Raylaun Henry is one of the top cornerbacks in the country from Maryland. They had a group from Louisiana. Braylon Calais can play a lot of positions. He’s playing everywhere from safety, corner, to receiver and running back. He's really getting recruited as a receiver and showed Holmon Wiggins he has what it takes to be that SEC-caliber guy.
- They had one new offer on Sunday, and Jay Schell, in the 2028 class from Georgia. He didn't have a big Power Four conference offer. He will go back to Georgia and hit the circuit with his high school team again. He is a 6-foot-2, 210-pound linebacker, and he moved really well. He was probably the best linebacker we saw on Sunday.
- There are a few guys we haven't talked about in Texas who showed well in the 2027 linebacker class. Hayden Waller and Rome Ewell is out of Springtown. Those are two Barker County boys west of Fort Worth who caught attention, but those are a couple of guys who don't have many offers but are on radars. I won't be surprised to see both on A&M's radar.
- Schell was the most recent offer, and a kicker, Asher Murray from Shreveport. He has a video of himself kicking a 58-yarder into the wind. He's got a chance and is one of the top kickers in the country. He's got offers from Memphis and Maryland. They both picked up offers on Sunday evening.
- Schell is a young kid figuring it out. He's the next man up who is physical. We have clips of him at the camp shuffling blocks, getting low on sleds and running through tackles. He's explosive and is one to watch over the next few years. A lot of SEC programs will jump on him. I have a feeling he will be one of those guys a lot of college fan bases will watch him over the years.
- Henry has offers everywhere. He is an All-American in a strong secondary. I got to see him against Duncanville, and he stood out. He's a wet blanket, he and Braylon Lane from the 2027 class. Lane won the fastest man award at camp. He’s big. You see him and say, “That's a DI ball player.” They went head-to-head numerous times and pushed each other very well. They were trying to recruit each other.
- Henry is very, very high on A&M and got some time with Jordan Peterson, and Mason Smith has played a role there. He picked up his offer, came out of camp and looked like a million bucks.
- Yesterday, they had the 7-on-7 camp, and it got much better and cleaner from a QB perspective. Peyton Houston will be the favorite to win the MVP award because he does everything, and with quick release, short arm movement, can throw the long ball and is on the short side. As a short guy, more power to you. I'm on the short side of short. He's under six feet for a quarterback standard.
- Houston has every school interested, including Texas, LSU, Clemson and USC. He's got it all. He helped Evangel Christian Academy win the 7-on-7 camp championship trophy with the only team out of state. A&M is all over Houston, and at the same time, the 7-on-7 trophy is going black to Louisiana.
- There is size in this recruiting class with Aaron Gregory, Madden Williams and recruitng Boobie Feaster. These are guys over six feet. They are looking for some size, and these are dynamic playmakers with length and size. Really, it comes down to variety just in your arsenal. Wiggins makes his receivers play every position, which is a big draw for guys. They want to learn the concepts that everyone in those positions will ask for in the NFL. This gives them versatility at the next level and gives them a chance to be an immediate contributor. It's something he's prided himself on over the years.
- Yesterday at the big man camp, Kaeden Scott is out of San Antonio. He is 290 to 300 pounds, 6-foot-7 and was dealing with a lower leg, but he was working out. Adam Cushing showed him little things here and there, and you could see his progression with reps. He adapts to coaching notes.
- Ismael Camara is out of Gilmore. Let me tell you... I’ve never had this happen for a guy with zero varsity film, and he's No. 3 in our rankings based on what we have seen this spring and summer. He went to high-level camps. He walked away with the OL MVP and was not a known guy. His talent is undeniable, and he has a soccer background. At 6-foot-6, 330 pounds, he is nimble, mean and nasty. He will be back on June 12. He was tuned in to what Cushing was doing out here. He has an injury, and when they can't be involved in the drills, seeing a guy locked in and trying to learn is a huge plus, especially for a guy who's super excited after moving in from France. I don't know why he was ruled ineligible when he moved. He's different, and that's one to watch out for.
- A&M offered him in November, but everybody across the country is pretty much locked in on Camara. He's got everyone's attention. If he were to call the coaching staff up right now and commit, they would gladly take it. It's rare for a guy without a varsity film.
- Yesterday, Shreveport Evangel took the championship. Houston was dropping dimes all over the place. Man, he was spinning it. Cy Ranch looked good. QB Braden Baker was in and out, but he has a big arm and is a big, tall kid. I think he has a few offers. They looked sharp throughout the day.
- Calvin Thomas was one guy A&M offered, but he wasn’t there. William Blaylock II has a lot of size. He's a coach's son, but he has some good instincts on that side of the ball. It was good for him to get some reps. I could see him blowing up as a linebacker prospect rather than as a tight end.
- Jaden Hurndon is a 6-foot-2, big, physical sophomore-to-be receiver in the 2028 class. He’s one of the very few prospects that’s played varsity football at Longview so young. They threw him out there, and he looked good. He’s picked up some offers, I think, by TCU and a few others.
- Paris Melvin Jr has an offer, and he's visiting June 20. I got to watch, and he's playing defensive back and receiver, but he's a guy that’s being recruited as an athlete who can play both sides of the ball.
- It’s a huge weekend. There are six commits with Helaman Casuga, Aaron Gregory, Jordan Carter, Jonathan Hatton Jr and Caleb Tafua. You’ve got two Tanks, linebacker Tank King and EDGE Tank Jones. You've got a couple of big defensive backs, like Dorian Barney and safety Bralan Womack. On the offensive line, Samuel Roseborough, John Turntine and Zaden Krempin. You have a good mix of in-state and out-of-state.
- I don’t know if I'd expect any commitments. A lot of these guys have other trips set up, but it's a big weekend. A&M had a kid rescheduled to June 20 in Brandon Arrington. He was running track and competing in nationals. Now, he is planning to get here that final weekend so the Aggies will get a chance to make the last impression. He’s planning to make his decision on July 5.
- Lamar Brown has been planning to announce on July 10. He'll be in town, not this weekend but next weekend. A lot of teams are going after him.
- They welcomed another 2026 prospect in town on an unofficial visit. Camren Hamiel is from Desert Edge. He will be back on June 20. On June 8, we have the next session of camps starting. A&M is going to have another big official visit on June 13 and then another on June 20. Hopefully, we see some momentum building. I think we`ll see a lot of staging and setting the foundation for a busy July and August.
