If anybody wants to geek out even more, the companion podcast is excellent.

After rewatching some of the scenes from the first couple of episodes the tick/slugs scare me the most. The scene with the two guys hooked to the pipe, completely helpless, only to both be killed by those things is more horrifying than anything the xenomorph did.

Does anyone have any theories on why the furniture and tech in the flashback sequences appears to be so dated (even by 2025 standards)?

The creator (Noah Hawley) did it intentionally as an homage to the 1979 Alien.

I would say it goes beyond just being an homage. This movie is set in the same era as the original Alien. It wouldn't make much sense for the physical appearance of the tech to look more advanced when the ship we are familiar with from the first movie was using what hollywood was capable of looking like advanced in 1979. Many believe the Star Wars prequels messed up by having the spacecraft in Episode 1 look higher tech than the tie fighters and star destroyers from "A New Hope."

So the dated living room set/dining table is a homage to Alien (1979)?

AHH - I get what you're saying.

The DAD flashbacks do have a 70s look to them. Assuming the brother is ~early 20s, these flashbacks are 15 ish years ago. I did get that feeling too that it looked kind of vintage for year 2100

It's relative. There are all kinds of future, fictional universes that are more advanced than reality, but may not look it from an aesthetic standpoint. Nothing different here other than a practical decision to try and align look and feel back to what was presented in the original Alien because this takes place during the same time frame as that movie which was then anchored in the thoughts of what the future might look like in 1979.

Also, styles are cyclical. Mom jeans were the actual jeans trend for a bit (maybe still are?) when 10 years ago you wouldn't catch a young person dead in those...because they are called Mom Jeans for a reason.

I think that was just the furniture of some rich a-holes. I mean, they were dressed up as fruity 18th-century dweebs with powdered wigs and makeup...

If you haven't yet, I recommend giving the podcast that zap posted above a listen. Noah Hawley goes into the thought process behind the aesthetics in the first part of the first episode.

(Not directed at you cajunaggie, I agree with your point, just posting as another recommendation for the podcast.)

Enjoyed it. I like how they have added the AI race into this slightly.

Finished ep 2 last night, they are definitely not holding back on the gore. It's been great so far, feels incredibly cinematic for a tv show and story, performances, and design are all top notch. The way they integrate this incredible advanced tech while keeping the very 80s DOS style design for the ship and other screen design is so cool.

One or two nitpicks…

- The Synths are 11 and 12 year olds, despite their physical abilities they're sending them into a potentially hostile/dangerous environment they know almost nothing about? Seems like a recipe for disaster as we've already seen in small chunks, though I imagine this will be part of the story going forward.

- The brother is more than lucky after escaping the xenomorph multiple times, but at the end it seemed to take him rather than kill him so again maybe there's more to the story there?

But those are small nitpicks, loving this overall so far.

I had similar thoughts: Basically my impression of the Prodigy CEO/Founder is that he is a relatively immature himself and is willing to break some eggs to make an omelette. The brother definitely has some plot armor and it did look like he was taken by the xenomorph which is why I was asking about the dated furniture in the flashback sequences with his Dad as there might be more to his and his sister's backstory or the xenomorph just didn't perceive him as a threat and he is being taken to the egg chamber.

Agreed there are definitely a few things that take it down from "perfect" to "d*mn good"
Some other questions/thoughts I had on re-watch:
1. The brother was a big one for me: As others mentioned, why does the xeno kill everyone instantly & cart him off away from the nest? Wouldn't the alien defend the nest?
2. What laid the eggs? Is there a queen lurking about?
3. Why would Wendy take the paper cutter arm as a sword on a rescue mission?
4. It's a hell of a party if you don't hear a gigantic space ship crash into your building.

I don't find this to be a plot hole, necessarily. I mean, it sort of is because they clearly aren't going to kill off the brother this early on. However, in the other movies, xenomorphs took people all the time vs killing them outright.

At what point after an episode airs can we stop the spoiler tags?

Why even have spoiler tags on a running show thread at all?

Just here to point out that FX on youtubeTV looks ridiculous. The picture, on just that channel, has always been almost unwatchable. As in the picture quality is really bad. It makes me want to purchase hulu on top of YTTV just so I can watch this show.

Is it just me?

Henceforth this thread is full of spoilers. Beware!

Do people actually click on this thread and not touch the spoiler tags? Why in the world would you come on here if not discussing the show.

I was trying to respect the process. Since we are no longer doing that, for anyone who hasn't watched the first two episodes...it turns out Ripley was a synth this entire time and there are multiple copies of her. A Weyland-Yutani space ship crashes into Earth with a plethora of xenomorphs and W-Y sends a small army of Ripley's to dispatch them.

I have noticed that in the past but this one looked OK for me. I've used hulu in the past because the picture on YouTube was so bad.

Ha. I killed my first sub with Hulu because it was so inferior to YTTV as to not even be comparable. PQ, features, everything about it is worse than YTTV.

Hulu is absolute trash and now that's it being absorbed into Disney+ it's going to be interesting to see how they incorporate Hulu Live into that.

Having said all of that, everyone's mileage seems to vary when it comes to PQ.

The conversation about the intelligence race between AI and the hybrids was really interesting. Especially when the doctor asked if they are creating the immortal consumer. A timely question as we enter the world of AI.

I can't help but wonder if Peter Pan or Pinocchio would be a better background theme for the hybrids.

They really nailed the look and feel of the Maginot compared the Nostromo.

The lead actress of Wendy makes unfortunate hair decisions real life too. What a bad hair cut in the show.

Congrats to Timothy Olyphant and Alex Lawther for being in both the Alien and Star Wars franchises.

The adult actors pretending to be kids is a little creepy, a little annoying, and a little enduring.

I think if I was Search and Rescue and learned it was a research ship I'd get out and focus on helping the building instead of the ship.

I know you're an eccentric trillionaire, but sending a bunch of kids in super human bodies into a crashed research ship is a terrible idea.

Is it canon that a xenomorph only attacks when someone is scared? We've seen seen a xenomorph not attach before, but I don't think it's ever been explicitly tied to fear before.

Them knowing that much about 1977 Reggie Jackson in 2120 would be the equivalent to us knowing that Dan Brouthers led the NL in BA, OBP, slugging, OPS, hits, total bases, and RBIs in 1882.

TOOL!

Turning a paper cutter into an impromptu katana is exactly what a 12 year old would do. We haven't seen it used yet. Still waiting on Chekov's paper cutter to pay off.

It's not super clear on this but from what I can tell we've seen a mix of teams checking out the ship and trying to evac folks in the building. All of the xenomorph scenes happened in the building.

This combined with the little stuffed animal hanging from her belt loop drove the point home.
