No big deal, I know your posting habits well enough to know you were simply pointing out how my post came across. I actually tend to land on your side in many of the inevitable culture war arguments that break out on F13, because I honestly believe I'm somewhere middle of the road in today's society...meaning that I can spot and acknowledge when intentional DEI/woke/progressive/whatever decisions are made by entertainers (and sometimes it is frustrating to me personally), but I also don't let it be the deciding factor in whether I consume that entertainment.

Yeah, I'm old myself now, so I'm afraid most of my choices if choosing from black actresses are too old for the role... like Jurnee Smollett and Gugu Mbatha-Raw

There also weren't viking longboats, Roman-era armor, steel plate space marine armor, or people who look like 3/4 of the cast, but yeah, important for the audience not to get thrown off by an orchestra.

That was the point of the tweet.

I could see this being the reason, by all means go win the award just know you pissed a great opportunity for an actual great movie. He's had box office successes so now he may be chasing what he doesn't have, the awards. I honestly think there needs to be a best picture for the most successful box office film in a given year. It awards who brought the largest audience to theaters.

Helen of Troy is the offspring of a woman, Leda, and Zeus disguised as a goose. Leda produced an egg and 4 children were hatched: Helen, Clymnestra, Castor, and Pollux.

So anyone claiming to know what that woman looks like has no idea what they are talking about.

Hmmmmmm....I wonder why she didn't copy and paste the four requirements (with only of 2 of them needed to be met)?

Telling how that tweet purposefully leaves out the part where diversity quotas don't have to be met for the cast as long as they're met in some way for the crew and creative roles. I'm not saying I agree with diversity quotas - I don't - I'm just saying it's WAY easier to qualify than certain people make it out to be. Like, the bar is incredibly low. To that end, again, you're completely ignoring the Oppenheimer point I brought up earlier, a movie that features one of the whitest casts of the century, yet still won Best Picture.

42 year-old woman from antiquity would look like a 60 year-old woman from modern day.

If they really want to drive the box office, they should give everyone who pre-orders tickets a 6-ounce bottle of Troy McClure's personal fragrance - Smellin' of Troy

Or he just hired actors he wanted to work with, like he always does.

Elliot Page? Sure, because he's worked with her/him begore. But Elliot Page as Achilles (if true) isn't simply "I like Elliot and she/he seems like the perfect fit for Achilles."

Lupita Nyongo? He's never worked with her before, and casting her as Helen of Troy (confirmed) in The Odyssey is a choice that's as far from obvious as it gets.

Don't be intentionally obtuse or naive just to avoid admitting that Hollywood leads the way in employing a DEI mindset when hiring.

It's not Achilles, it's the ghost of Achilles. Huge difference, and it's a minor part of the story.

is the "ghost" of Achilles seen after we see the actual Achilles?

and it's two different actors?

because if not, your point is meaningless.

Your choice of black actresses is interesting because they are both half white. But they are nice choices.
I'm more in the Halle Berry and Jasmine Guy camp.

Halle Berry's mother was white and Jasmine Guy's mother was of Portuguese descent.

From the trailers, I just don't get the feeling of a Nolan banger, however I will say I don't give 2 craps about the skin color of any of the cast in a work of fiction. In fact, I think it's a good thing, similar to Bridgerton. I'm a Western Civilization chauvinist. It is the best civilization that has ever existed and all people of all races that want to be a part of it should be able to see themselves in foundational works of fiction in Western Civ.

To me, "woke" is when movies and shows try to push false ideas of other primitive civilizations that Western Civ has conquered having superior ways than Western Civ.

Yes, I am sure race swapping any of the Jewish scientist would have gone over really well in Hollywood.

The race swapping and mentally ill 5'1" warrior are bad enough, but the giants in Cylon armor and other crap is equally as bad.

To get this thread back on track, and because I contributed to getting it offtrack.....

When this project was first announced I was extremely hyped. After all, one of the best currently active directors making the original epic fantasy tale. Bound to be an instant classic, right?

But after the trailers we've seen, I'm starting to second guess if he actually is the best suited director for this task. And NO, this isn't about casting choices, eschewing an orchestra, which version of The Odyssey he'll adapt, or even the armor. I mean his way of telling a story.

Is Nolan too "sterile" or "cold" in his storytelling for this work? He'll definitely relay his own "vision" but will it be one that most people will appreciate and do justice to the story? I mean, Interstellar and Inception weren't emotionless, but his approach to them was still very "scientific". (Maybe those words aren't quite what I'm going for, but I hope you get my drift)

I'm starting to have my doubts, even though I'm still looking forward to watching it.

I get what you are saying. He has an engineer's type brain. He has to perfect the formula of the screenplay to relay the idea he is going for. Human relationships within his films are his shortcoming. They only are used to serve the overall thematic idea he is going for.

What makes me have some hope he may pull it off is that he does great with themes of men with obsessions.
