Nothing will be as stressful of a watch as Uncut Gems.

I am making a watchlist for some of these nominees.

Does Bugonia have any similarities to Poor Things? I see they were both directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. I did not enjoy Poor Things and could not finish it.

Additionally, does Marty Supreme have the same darker vibe as Uncut Gems?

I heard both movies were pretty bad. I think we have similar tastes in what makes an entertaining movie. The only other movie I might see eventually is Sinners whenever it's free to stream, but not really going out of my way to do it after MBJ's somewhat racist acceptance speech.

Just go watch the movies, man. Then give your honest thoughts after. Simple two-step process. Observe and report. Bare minimum.

Just finished sinners and it is absolutely absurd that movie has the most nominations in history. It just wasn't very good.

Eta - I can see how people enjoyed it, but I thought it was terrible. It in no way is deserving of the most nominated movie of all time title though. Just the snake cgi alone should have kept it from getting all those nominations.

Seems like a remake of that Tarantino Clooney vampire movie 20 something years ago. I still have about 45 minutes left to finish it, I've been watching it while on the bike trainer.

Bingo, just not as good

Skin color gives you an advantage in just about every area of life now. From art to employment to school admissions. Black cast and creator sent it over the edge, imo. Black Panther got the same kind of love too. It's kind of patronizing if you think about it.

Kind of?

I enjoyed Bugonia more than Poor Things. It is more of a "bottle movie" where there are only a few sets so the actors do all of the heavy lifting for the film. Without giving too much away, it is a kidnap/abduction movie. Its not as odd as Poor Things. The title and promo shots definitely make it seem as odd as Poor Things.

How do Asians do so well here? They dominate everyone, including whites, by every metric. Does culture matter? Does the family unit matter? Do children with fathers in the home have advantages over those without? Does valuing certain things like education and abiding by the law give one an advantage over someone who doesn't value such things?

I am white and me and my buddies were physically assaulted by white officers after shooting fireworks in a field near our neighborhood when we were like 14-15. They rolled up on us, screamed at us to lay in the mud and then started kicking our legs apart. One meathead cop literally held his gun at our heads while screaming violent threats, I sh** you not. I don't know if they were "having fun" with us, got reports of gunshots instead of fireworks and were "on edge", or decided to try to "scare us straight"...but I do know one thing, if I was black or brown, I would be able to say it was a racist event and literally no one would question it.

I grew up working class and later solidly middle class later in life. We were harrassed by latino gangs for being white. My buddy had his face pummeled in by them when we were 16...they flagged him down in his truck like they needed help and then beat the sh** out of his face when he came to a stop. I cannot relate to anyone who says being white gives you automatic advantages. If you live in an area that isn't majority white, it puts a target on your back, from my experience. It would be much better to be black and go to Memorial HS in Houston, than to be white and go to Willowridge or Booker T. Washington, I can guarantee that.

Now, being RICH gives you advantages...welcome to the entire history of the world. Denzel has certain advantages I will never have, for instance.

And yet...

- The literal thematic point of One Battle After Another is to show extreme/violent leftism for the morally bankrupt pursuit it is.

- Sinners *absolutely* had a shot at winning it all - it literally came down to the wire - which, by definition, left plenty of doubt as to whether One Battle would win or not. (Never mind that half the right thinks Sinners is just as a "woke.")

But you didn't watch either, or any of the nominees for that matter, so you of course wouldn't by privy to those facts.

Why some of you always feel the need to voice your opinions, while simultaneously showing that your opinions are utterly irrelevant/misinformed, I will never understand.

"I didn't watch any of this crap, and I clearly don't know what I'm talking about, but I just thought I'd pop in to make both of those facts abundantly clear!"

Congrats!

The beginning of the movie definitely lays the groundwork to make it feel like it's going to be about the moral superiority of the left, but it doesn't take long to figure out that's not what the movie is doing. Regardless of what PTA's personal politics are when it comes to immigration, the movie is mostly comedic because most of the characters on both sides are idiots and extremely flawed. There's no real heros in the movie, no one that anyone can completely identify with even if they're considered a protagonist in the film.

I think it's really cool that a movie like Sinners won a lot of awards last night, and the awards overall were unique. Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan won oscars for a vampire movie taking place in the deep south set in the early 20th century. Amy Madigan won best supporting actress for playing a modern day witch in a horror/suspense film. PTA had never won any Oscars until last night, and he won several. That's a pretty noteworthy night IMO regardless of how history ends up judging that group of films.

One Battle After Another is not PTA's best film, but a lot of how the Oscar's plays out has to do with timing and what films and directors you're up against in any particular year. As crazy as it sounds There Will Be Blood came out almost 20 years ago, in most years that film would have been a shoe-in for best picture and director but the 2008 Oscars had No Country For Old Men to contend with.

As someone who's not remotely aligned with Hollywood when it comes to politics I have to suspend my political thoughts to get through the show because so many of the people there insist upon using it as a platform to spout what they believe. I choose not to let those things ruin the show for me because I've always loved movies, and I always will.

For me it's not even their politics. I have always known that Hollywood was overwhelmingly liberal. It's the arrogance, and the preachiness. I am sorry, but I don't need to be lectured on how the world works by some drama major who hit the life lotto and lives in a bubble in Malibu. These people are the extreme outliers in society.

They think their money and fame magically makes them smart.

In all honesty, I think a lot of us over time buy into them being "smart", because they are very confident and generally well spoken. Someone like Javier Bardem can come across as intelligent, and he certainly is in the arts, as he has a tremendous gift...but that gift is almost sociopathic...the ability to be someone completely different than yourself, and convince others it is not you. That doesn't mean he has a clue on immigration policy or any other political or social matter. In fact, many of these people hold completely absurd political beliefs.

Literally all you do on this board is preach and lecture, with arrogance. You're incapable of having a conversation about movies, shows, etc on their own merits, without airing your politically motived grievances in every last post. However insufferable Hollywood may be (and they often are, no doubt), you are the exact same way, just in the opposite direction. Seriously, I've never once seen you post something that's not political, that's not preachy/lecturing, that's not telling us how wrong everyone else's politics are but yours. Good Lord, man.

Well, obviously. Sinners doesn't include an erotic dance by Salma Hayek. Kind of knocks it down a few pegs in the comparison.

Started rewatching The Departed last night...got about 3/4 of the way through and will finish tonight. So much better than the vast vast majority of stuff that comes out nowadays, including Sinners and One Battle After Another. Amazing movie.

And I recently posted about "Disclosure Day" and a few other movies. Also Martin Short's daughter's tragic death. When Hollywood starts getting on their preachy hypocritical soap box though, some of us are going to call it out. Remember, you're super saturated and probably numb to it all being in West Hollywood or Studio City or wherever you might be.

For the life of me, I don't know why some of you just can't ignore. I make a comment about certain movies possibly receiving preferantial treatment and hype on racial grounds, and then it turns into a "yeah the white man has it so bad" derail. I actually LIKE when black movies defeat or over shadow movies created by white liberals. I guarantee I have a lot more in common with Michael B Jordan and Ryan Coogler than Paul Thomas Anderson.

When Hollywood gets overtly political...like Billie Eillish ranting against the rich and saying she lives on stolen land...some of the responses are naturally going to be somewhat political. If they just entertained, and didn't constantly preach down to us like their drama degrees make them authorities, there would virtually be zero political commentary on this forum, ever.

So, you heard someone call someone else a racial slur one time and they didn't call you a racial slur... therefore... white privilege?

Or, he has white privilege because he knew a black kid who had to ride the bus, and he had a stay at home mom to take him? Seriously?

The academy and award winners bring politics into it and then you get butthurt when someone calls them out.

The entire show was telling half the country how wrong their politics are.

Maybe your ilk could just talk about movies and shows on merit but you don't. Then cry like a baby when someone brings a different opinion.

Tell me you didn't watch without telling me you didn't watch. Because out of a three-and-a-half hour ceremony, there were maybe, I don't know, five political comments/moments? The horror!

Are you guys ever not so hilariously over the top with your whining about this stuff?

Also, notice I didn't say anything about 1981 Monte Carlo's opinions themselves. I didn't "disagree" with anything he said. Rather, my issue was with his hypocrisy. He complains about being preached/lectured at while preaching/lecturing himself, and then he has the gall to say things like, "For the life of me, I don't know why some of you can't just ignore [me]" while not able to ignore Hollywood's politics himself/complain endlessly about them, etc.

I know that nuanced level of distinction is hard for some of you, but hopefully you can grasp it in this instance.

After a relaxing afternoon of being away from TexAgs, figured I'd respond to this creative repositioning of what you said.

I was responding to this statement from you:

Quote:

Skin color gives you an advantage in just about every area of life now.

Do people of color get noticed more for excelling in certain fields? Sure, happens in a variety of ways and you do see it in things like the Oscars. But they don't do it without also being insanely talented.

Ryan Coogler is tracking to be as successful as guys like Spielberg through his first five films, that's insane for any director. The guy makes compelling stories that make tons of money (writing, directing, and producing) and is being recognized for it.

Fun story: Ryan Coogler was also arrested while trying to make a large withdrawal at a bank a couple years ago. Nothing to do with skin color I'm sure.

This is apparently news to you, but white people get treated differently because of the color of their skin in most any aspect of life. Going into a store, showing up at an appointment, stopping at a bank, walking behind someone on the street, getting pulled over by a cop, going into a job interview, and the list goes on and on. And yes, there's of course exception, but I find it kind of amazing that someone genuinely things minorities have it better than they do.

And thanks for letting me know things have changed, but I've been laid off a few times in the last several years and have shockingly landed great new jobs each time despite being a middle aged white guy.

If you truly think you're worse off than minorities because of the color of your skin, tell that to a friend of color. I'm sure they'll totally agree with you.

Yeah this may have been the most tame political Oscars in 20 years. If anything it felt like the few bits Conan did were forced to try and appease an audience who otherwise didn't really care. It was refreshing actually.
