He's kind of a reclusive guy. People who haven't worked with him probably don't know him very well.
There's also Hollywood's regard for its self interest. Sinners was a good movie that made a bunch of money. One Battle After Another was a good movie that was a massive flop.

Ah, yes, Hollywood purposely cheered less for the white liberal with a celebrated career, who was born and raised LA, who's married to a black woman, all so they could cheer louder for the black guy. Makes perfect sense. It couldn't possibly because a lot of people simply like Sinners more than One Battle, or because Coogler's a notoriously great guy who's easy to root for, or because he champions the theatrical experience more than just about anyone save for Christopher Nolan. It's solely because of the color of skin. That's it!

It's actually much simpler than you want to try and surmise. It isn't about Coogler v PTA.
Sinners is the fubu movie of the year. And I liked it BTW (although I don't think it's worthy of a best picture win). But a movie that has been pushed as exactly is going to get the easy cheers, so don't act surprised or as if that's not a contributing factor.
There's no comment to be made about PTA or One Battle. It's purely as "of course the house is going to roar heavily for that film/crew" situation. And while race is a factor and acting as if it isn't is pure ignorance, it doesn't bother me at all. I'm happy Hollywood people are championing that film and that team. They put together a hell of a project and did it in an intentional way.

It's a gut punch every year, but in all honesty it's one of my favorite parts every year. They get one last send off, but you can visit them any time you want by throwing on one of their films.
