My Thoughts:
- Sinners with 16 nominations. I just don't get it. It was good but the most nominated film is history is wild to me. I've seen 6 of the 10 Best Picture nominees and I probably enjoyed it the least of those 6.

I think it may be getting some of the same preferential treatment that "Black Panther" got. For obvious reasons.

Same with "One Battle"...I think it's getting a little over-hyped for "racial/political reasons" as well. Especially with wannabe "revolutionaries" fighting ICE in the streets lately. I am sorry, it was decent, but not THAT good. A movie like "Once Upon a Time" blows it out of the f-ing water...like, it feels like a cheap, "straight to Tubi" movie, compared to that film, and several others to come out in recent yrs.

Benicio did a pretty solid job, but he has acted his ass off way better in other movies...this was a pretty "avg" performance from him. Leo was pretty solid, but nothing earth shattering imo.

Part of it is just attacks from rival studios (who have competing actors) via social media bots, publicists stirring up ****, etc. This happens every year and sometimes it sticks, sometimes it doesn't. Then, yeah, some people are getting kind of tired of his frank, I-want-to-win, try-hard, always-everywhere campaign, his whole New York vibe/attitude, him dating Kylie Jenner, him getting so much praise so young, etc. Finally, he didn't do himself any favors last week in an interview where he said...

Quote:

"I don't want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it's like, 'Hey, keep this thing alive, even though like no one cares about this anymore.' All respect to all the ballet and opera people out there."

I personally have no problem with that quote, but people of course took offense to it, it blew up, made headlines, etc.

Sinners isn't even one of the top 3 vampire movies. It's not BAD, but, if it starts racking up award after award at the Oscars it'll be due to "politics", plain and simple. And when Sinners starts winning categories like 'Set Design' when half the movie was shot on one set, you'll know that "politics" are back at it....

I see what you are. I know what you are.

How many immigrants are the people at the Oscars hosting on their stolen land?

Why is "the tide turning against Timmy"? Genuinely asking. Has he just been too present/available and people are getting tired of him?

He's dating the much less attractive Jenner girl, seen here in a plastic surgery transformation that even Michael Jackson would call excessive.

She's got so much plastic in her that he'll probably die from BPA poisoning in the next couple of years.

I think it should be both. I think movies are a popular art form. So a movie that has wide critical success AND box office (or financial) success is exactly what the Academy should reward, IMO. Now, small movies can achieve that because they are made with smaller budgets, but I do think broad appeal is a good thing for movies. This used to be the case in the past.

Out of all the Jennerdashians, Brody seems like the only relatively "normal" one. Married a hot surfer chick too.

I liked it but agree. It's obviously virtue signaling and we should all be objective enough to realize that. Most nominations of all time?! That is laughably absurd and if it really warranted that then the rest of the movies this year were very, very poor.

I watched The Secret Agent on Hulu last night, wrapping up my Best Picture viewing. It was a odd year. A lot of good to really good movies, but I don't think there was a single great one. At least not on initial watch, time and rewatch may change my opinion on that.

If I was casting a ballot I guess I would go with:

  • One Battle After Another
  • Hamnet
  • Frankenstein
  • Train Dreams
  • Bugonia
  • Sentimental Value
  • The Secret Agent
  • Sinners
  • F1
  • Marty Supreme
Looking at GoldDerby odds, OBAA is still a very big favorite for Best Picture and Director, but they now have Jordan as a large favorite for Best Actor. That will be an interesting one to see play out.

my 2 favorite movies this year -

It was Just an Accident
Sorry, Baby

Accident got nominated for best foreign film. I think Sorry, Baby got shut out of nominations (97% rotten tomatoes). Both movies left me thinking about them for awhile - always a good sign. Blue Moon would be my 3rd favorite. I've seen 5 of the best picture nominations, One Battle would be my pick.

I saw 4 of the pictures on that list. Frankenstein was by far the best. F1 was the most entertaining. One Battle was the most overhyped - what a bunch of terrible, miserable characters. Sinners was just meh. I felt bad wasting the time after watching both One Battle and Sinners. My .02.

Yep. And it would be hard to communicate to anyone under 50 what a huge deal Redford was in the 70s. One great movie after another.

Hamnet is so much better of a film than One Battle After Another that it's hard to believe that the two are being portrayed as equally worthy best picture films. Hamnet brings the seriousness and gravitas of a best picture film that will hold up for years to come. One Battle was silly, over-acted, and does not make you think twice about it once the movie ends.

That's what's great about opinions - I have the exact opposite thoughts about these two movies. Thank goodness it isn't the 80s or 90s when Hamnet would have swept the Oscars!

Yes, hooray for the current iteration of the Oscars! Where you now get a participation trophy since you have a dozen best picture nominations. You also get Sinners… SINNERS for crying out loud… breaking the record for most nominations for obvious reasons that no one is allowed to talk about. And a movie is about to win Best Picture where the most memorable scene is the cartoonish scene of Leo falling off a 4 story building and surviving because he just happened to hit a tree on the way down. We were narrowly close to having Emilia Perez win Best Picture! The current version of awards shows is not an improvement on the past. I'm hoping that the Rob Reiner tribute will help salvage tonight's show, mostly because it will remind us of a foregone era.

My annual Oscar picks:

I have seen all the acting and screenplay nominations, all the shorts, 9 of 10 Best Picture nominees (have not seen F1 yet, which has no chance), and 3 of the 5 foreign films. I won't make picks for the technical categories or the animated and long form documentaries, which I didn't see.

Best Picture
Should win: Sentimental Value
Will win: One Battle After Another

Best Director
Should win: Ryan Coogler, Sinners
Will win: Paul Thomas Anderson, One Battle After Another

Best Actor
Should win: Timothee Chalamet, Marty Supreme
Will win: Michael B. Jordan, Sinners

Best Actress
Should win: Rose Byrne, If I Had Legs I'd Kick You
Will win: Jessie Buckley, Hamnet

Best Supporting Actor
Should win: Stellan Skarsgard, Sentimental Value
Will win: Sean Penn, One Battle After Another (O/U on the number of insufferable things he says during his acceptance speech is 1.5-take the over)

Best Supporting Actress
Should win: Elle Fanning, Sentimental Value
Will win: Amy Madigan, Weapons

Best Original Screenplay
Should win: It Was Just an Accident
Will win: Sinners

Best Adapted Screenplay
Should and will win: One Battle After Another

Best International Feature
Should and will win: Sentimental Value
(Didn't see Sirat, will probably see it this week at my local cinema, or The Voice of Hind Rajab)

Best Casting
Should and will win: Sinners

Best Original Score
Should and will win: Sinners

Best Song
Should win: "I Lied to You", Sinners
Will win: "Golden", K Pop Demon Hunters

Best Documentary Short
Weak year. This category will come down to a couple of self-congratulatory pieces about journalism.
Should win: Armed Only with a Camera: The Life and Death of Brent Renaud
Will win: All the Empty Rooms
Special mention: Perfectly a Strangeness: if you've ever found yourself saying, man, I really wish they would make more silent movies where some donkeys walk around aimlessly for 15 minutes, have I got the film for you!

Best Live Action Short
The likely winner is so ridiculously pretentious that Michael DeSanta should be watching it in an arthouse cinema in Los Santos.
Should win: The Singers
Will win: Two People Exchanging Saliva
Most enjoyable: A Friend of Dorothy, unless you can't get enough of menstruation jokes, in which case Jane Austen's Period Drama

Best Animated Short
Should win: The Three Sisters
Will win: Butterfly
Most enjoyable: Forevergreen

What's funny, assuming this happens, is that years from now the voters will award Chalamet the Best Actor award for some performance that's ok but nowhere near his best, but it'll be their way of saying, "Sorry, we really should have given it to you years ago for performances like in Marty Supreme!". Lol, never change Academy, never change.

It still bugs me Leo got it for a performance that's maybe at the bottom of his top 10 performances, if that.

Similarly for Scorsese.

For those tuning in, reminder that the ceremony/broadcast begins at 6 PM Central as opposed to the usual 7 PM start time in the past. Last year they moved it up an hour and the ratings went up as well, so they're trying it again this year.

Paul Newman for The Color of Money and not Hud or Cool Hand Luke.

Al Pacino for Scent of a Woman and not the Godfather, or Part II.

Denzel Washington's Best Actor for Training Day and not Malcolm X or The Hurricane.

I can see why the Academy wants to avoid the embarrassment of never recognizing the likes of Alfred Hitchcock again. What is going to be considered great in the future is not always apparent in the moment. I think that is one of the things that will put PTA over the top tonight, even though One Battle is far from his best film.

Chalamet's comments came after voting had already closed. So if he loses it'll be for other reasons, having more to do with the stuff I said toward the top of the page. Or because people simply liked Jordan's performance(s) more. Though I'm sure some here will claim virtue signaling as well, which may play a part, but not as much as some might think considering how international the Academy voting body has become.

There's also still world where Chalamet and Jordan split the votes, allowing DiCaprio to take it, which would be pretty cool too.

Actually, sorry, I was wrong. I heard that on The Big Picture podcast recently but I just checked and the interview aired on February 21, while voting closed on March 5. So, yeah, Chalamet's comment will definitely/unfortunately be taken into consideration.
