Just finished sinners and it is absolutely absurd that movie has the most nominations in history. It just wasn't very good.

Eta - I can see how people enjoyed it, but I thought it was terrible. It in no way is deserving of the most nominated movie of all time title though. Just the snake cgi alone should have kept it from getting all those nominations.

Seems like a remake of that Tarantino Clooney vampire movie 20 something years ago. I still have about 45 minutes left to finish it, I've been watching it while on the bike trainer.

With all due respect to the late JVB. This is the OSCARS not "let's recognize every actor ever who died this year." James wasn't, what some might say, "An Oscar caliber actor."

Tell me you've never watched Angus without telling me you've never watched Angus.

Skin color gives you an advantage in just about every area of life now. From art to employment to school admissions. Black cast and creator sent it over the edge, imo. Black Panther got the same kind of love too. It's kind of patronizing if you think about it.

It makes no sense they'll have terrible 5 minute bits by presenters and cut off winners after 20 seconds.

And I couldn't care less about Kpop.

If they were talking about the importance of transing kids or railing against ICE (which would be funny because every Asian's immigration system is way more hardcore than ours), do they get their mics cut so shortly?

Was that an accident? Seemed awful fast.

And yet...

- The literal thematic point of One Battle After Another is to show extreme/violent leftism for the morally bankrupt pursuit it is.

- Sinners *absolutely* had a shot at winning it all - it literally came down to the wire - which, by definition, left plenty of doubt as to whether One Battle would win or not. (Never mind that half the right thinks Sinners is just as a "woke.")

But you didn't watch either, or any of the nominees for that matter, so you of course wouldn't by privy to those facts.

Why some of you always feel the need to voice your opinions, while simultaneously showing that your opinions are utterly irrelevant/misinformed, I will never understand.

"I didn't watch any of this crap, and I clearly don't know what I'm talking about, but I just thought I'd pop in to make both of those facts abundantly clear!"

Congrats!

The beginning of the movie definitely lays the groundwork to make it feel like it's going to be about the moral superiority of the left, but it doesn't take long to figure out that's not what the movie is doing. Regardless of what PTA's personal politics are when it comes to immigration, the movie is mostly comedic because most of the characters on both sides are idiots and extremely flawed. There's no real heros in the movie, no one that anyone can completely identify with even if they're considered a protagonist in the film.

I think it's really cool that a movie like Sinners won a lot of awards last night, and the awards overall were unique. Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan won oscars for a vampire movie taking place in the deep south set in the early 20th century. Amy Madigan won best supporting actress for playing a modern day witch in a horror/suspense film. PTA had never won any Oscars until last night, and he won several. That's a pretty noteworthy night IMO regardless of how history ends up judging that group of films.

One Battle After Another is not PTA's best film, but a lot of how the Oscar's plays out has to do with timing and what films and directors you're up against in any particular year. As crazy as it sounds There Will Be Blood came out almost 20 years ago, in most years that film would have been a shoe-in for best picture and director but the 2008 Oscars had No Country For Old Men to contend with.

As someone who's not remotely aligned with Hollywood when it comes to politics I have to suspend my political thoughts to get through the show because so many of the people there insist upon using it as a platform to spout what they believe. I choose not to let those things ruin the show for me because I've always loved movies, and I always will.

You're an old...who comes from an era of fairness and equality. You were not discriminated against when you applied to school, like many whites and asians are today, in favor of people with different skin colors or ethnicities. Same with the job market. You were likely hired based on your resume and achievements and maybe personality.

Same for me, we never had to face open discrimination because of the color of our skin like many do now.

I do not know why Liberals pretend this doesn't happen. Just admit it does, and say you support the reasoning behind it..."affirmative action"..."it gives us the warm n fuzzies", or whatever. Don't pretend whites and even Asian people aren't openly discriminated against...this is PROVEN...embrace it and elaborate on why this is a "good thing".

For me it's not even their politics. I have always known that Hollywood was overwhelmingly liberal. It's the arrogance, and the preachiness. I am sorry, but I don't need to be lectured on how the world works by some drama major who hit the life lotto and lives in a bubble in Malibu. These people are the extreme outliers in society.

They think their money and fame magically makes them smart.

In all honesty, I think a lot of us over time buy into them being "smart", because they are very confident and generally well spoken. Someone like Javier Bardem can come across as intelligent, and he certainly is in the arts, as he has a tremendous gift...but that gift is almost sociopathic...the ability to be someone completely different than yourself, and convince others it is not you. That doesn't mean he has a clue on immigration policy or any other political or social matter. In fact, many of these people hold completely absurd political beliefs.

I just stated an honest opinion that certain black artists or films may benefit a little bit because of "social justice". I certainly felt this way with Black Panther. I also think Sinner is pretty overrated...most nominated film in the history of cinema? LOL

Had nothing to do with "oppression of the white man" or anything, but you couldn't just state that you disagree that race every plays a role in these types of things and state your reasoning. You had to pivot with this snide comment...

Welcome to the South, it's been here a while. Incredibly, there are a few small pockets of white people left who only feel comfortable around other white people.

Care to share the ways it has benefited you?
Well, because my ancestors are not Hispanic nor Black nor any other non-White color, instead of growing up as the product of people who were systematically discriminated against for a couple of centuries, denied basic freedoms, denied the right to vote, denied being able to take certain jobs, live in certain neighborhoods, go to certain schools, drink from water fountains, denied being able to go to most colleges, etc.
I grew up as the product of multiple generations of educated, financially successful people stacked on more successful people back to the early 1800s on my mother's side of the family and the early 1900s on my father's side. This awarded me many opportunities to live in a nice neighborhood, go to better public schools, have access to more academic resources, take trips with my family that resulted in the expansion of my academic and cultural awareness, while also stoking the flames of several interests, as well as attend several high dollar academic and athletic camps that benefited my future success a student.

My best friend in elementary school was black and lived 45 minutes from school. He woke up at 5 am every day and rode a noisy ass bus to school while I slept until probably 6:50 ( am not sure of the time frame given my extreme age) and my stay-at-home mom drove me to school. She also picked me up at 230 sharp and helped me with my homework every day. She was also white, for the record. His mom was single, black, and worked three jobs, getting home at 11. I feel this probably benefited me by having more time to study and more adequate help doing so.

In college, my roommate freshman year was an Indian guy. Once, when the guys came charging through the halls demanding everyone get up and go to Bonfire Cut, he stepped out into the hall and asked them to please stop as he had a bad migraine - legit, not from drinking. One of the Bonfire rowdies allegedly called him a sand n*gger, I was still asleep but have no cause to doubt his word. He threw a punch at said rowdy, and it got ugly from there. I finally did get up and found the two of them beating the **** out of him in the stairwell near the laundry room on the 4th floor of Aston Hall. I got in there and threw some punches and just about got my head caved by one of the two Cut guys who seemed like he should have been an early MMA fighter instead of working on the Bonfire. Eventually, more people came and broke it up. My roommate was forced to go see a counselor for his anger management issues and had to check in with our RA every single week for an entire school year to insure he wasn't :causing trouble." Me and the other two white boys got off with a warning, even thought based on the work they had done to him in a few short minutes, it seemed like the two of them were trying to cause permanent brain damage to my roommate.

In 1985, we were on a family vacation in Padre Island when we got pulled over by a police officer who had his gun out as he approached the car. My dad, a very tan Mediterranean chap, rolled down the window and the cop started barking questions at him in Spanish. When my dad started saying he didn't speak Spanish in English, the cop ignored him and asked my Mom if this man was kidnapping us. He asked several multiple pointed, covering all my bases questions. My mom has super fair skin, and my brother and i are equally honky, so naturally, if a cop saw a dark-skinned man driving a sweet 1980s Buick sedan that close to the border with a white woman and two white kids, it was obviously a carjacking/kidnapping scenario. Fortunately, my dad was able to show his ID, proving he was also a honky, and I didn't lose my father to police violence that day, because everything was cool once it was established he was white. Cop even apologized.

In 1988, I was named captain of the Prep Bowl team at my junior high when our sponsor, Mr. Macey, said that I had a clear speaking voice that was easy to understand. Everyone else on the team was Black, Indian, or Chinese, so that seemed like it was me getting a privilege due to my whiteness. I was able to put this on my resume to get into an academic program in 9th grade. it felt great knowing it was because I was white.

In 2002, I traveled to Portland, Oregon to visit friends from A&M and attend a wedding. The husband of one of my friends let me borrow his truck to drive around Portland for a couple of days. He had bought it from a police auction in Dallas. It was lowered, was painted black with a blue/pink stripe down the side, and had a stereo system that cost more than some houses I've bought in my life. It was a hilarious thing to drive around. As I was exploring the Columbia Valley River Gorge, I was pulled over for no reason by a Oregon State Trooper. When he saw what i looked like, he asked about the truck, I explained it and he laughed and said "I thought you were one of those damn Mexicans up from California to buy weed." I laughed too, because he was a cop.

And most importantly:

In 1994, I had Spanish 101 with a really hot blonde girl at the Academic building. There was an anonymous football player in the same class. Despite most of the young ladies in the class talking to him frequently during class about his success and that of the team, when it was time to review for the midterm, said hot blonde girl asked me - as ugly and dorky as A&M guys get - if i wanted to come hang out and study for the mid-term. This only made logical sense because I had made high A's on the two tests, which was common knowledge because our professor like putting everyone's grades on the board. Over at her apartment a couple of days later, I commented that I was surprised she hadn't asked anonymous football player to study, since they say next to each other and were always talking. She replied, "Oh, god no, I don't like black guys." While I found this offputting, i kept my mouth shut, as I later got to make out with her for about 20 minutes because I did my dork best to make her some flash cards to help her ace the test. I never would have gotten this monumental honor had i not been white.

In 1994, I had too Spanish 101 with a really hot blonde girl at the Academic building.

Soooo a girl you made out with in college had a preference that doesn't jibe with your world view.
Stunning.

I'm just excited she made out with me because I was white. My white privilege got me an exciting evening with a girl about 35 social levels out of my league.

I am making a watchlist for some of these nominees.

Does Bugonia have any similarities to Poor Things? I see they were both directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. I did not enjoy Poor Things and could not finish it.

Additionally, does Marty Supreme have the same darker vibe as Uncut Gems?

Pretty sure all of Lanthimos' movies are similar in vibe, but I could be wrong about Bugonia.

Marty Supreme has the same pacing and intensity as Uncut Gems but I didn't feel it was as dark.
