Rockets Week 1 Preview:
Schedule: 10/21 @ OKC: 10/24 vs. Detroit; 10/27 vs. Brooklyn
Preseason Results: The Rockets went 4-0 in the preseason and lit up the scoreboard with scores of 122, 140, 130, and 133.
Who's new: Kevin Durant, Clint Capela (I guess), Josh Okogie, JD Davison, Isaiah Crawford, Dorian-Finney Smith
Who's gone: Jalen Green (thanks, Jesus), Dillon Brooks, Cam Whitmore, Jock Landale
Who's hurt: Fred Van Vleet
Biggest question: Who the hell is going to bring the ball up and who will step up as the biggest distributor?
Smallest question: How many games into the season will it take Phoenix fans to start hating Jalen Green?
Let's be honest here: The Rockets have had some really lucky personnel contributions to get where they are right now even with FVV hurt. Since 2021, the Rockets have used #1 draft picks on : Jalen Green (ass), Usman Garuba (ran back to Spain); Josh Christopher (out of the league); Jabari (the new Buck Johnson), tari Eason - (tremendous but constantly getting hurt); Amen - (fantastic and great potential); Cam Whitmore (not a fan of trying); and Reed Sheppard (incomplete grade, but hovering around D- so far).
That's one really good player, one good player who keeps getting hurt, and one guy barely good enough to start out of 8 first-round picks, with 4 of them being in the top 4. Trading for Sengun and now Durant have been unbelievable steals. I never thought I'd see a dumber trade than the Rockets getting McGrady for the Clown Brothers and Kelvin Cato but this might do it. Even with VanVleet out, the time has to be now with Durant's age.
Who's on tap:
Tonight, at Oklahoma City: The Thunder were the best team in the league by far last year and their O/U on wins is 62.5 for this year. SGA won the scoring title and MVP and the right to play on my fantasy basketball team. They are incredibly deep. SGA averaged 32.7 points per game last year, Jalen Williams made the All-Star team, and Lugeuentz Dort was in the running for Defensive Player of the Year. What's really scary for me is that Big White Stick Chet Holmgren came back from his muti-year injury and was really good last year. He scored 15 points per game, averaged rebounds, and 2. blocks in just 27 minutes a game. They also have Alex Caruso, so whoop, howdy, gigem. The Thunder are a 7.5 point favorite.
Thursday, vs. Detroit: The Pistons snuck into the playoffs for the first time in 6 years last season and took the Knicks to six games in the first round. They are led by Cade Cunningham who averaged 26.1 points, 9.1 assists , and 6.1 rebounds last year and is still just 23. They've got a talent drop off after Cade to the likes of Jaden Ivey an Malik Beasley. They have Amen's twin brother Ausar, who hasn't been nearly as good.
Monday, vs. Brooklyn: I have no idea who plays for the Nets. They only won 26 games last year. After reading their roster, I'm still not sure I know who plays for them. They're young - their oldest guy was born in 1996, and they have 4 rookies on roster and 4 other guys in their second year. They have several guys who sound like other sports people I know - a guy name Etiennne, a guy named Claxton, Michael Porter Jr. sounds vaguely familiar, and they have Terance Mann, who disppeared into the Iowa cornfields in 1988 at the request of Shoeless Joe Jackson. What I do know is the Rockets have the Nets' next 75 draft picks. Let's just assume this one is a win.
Hopeful record prediction: 2-1
