Things I've seen in my lifetime that have left me speechless.

1. Driving back to A&M from Houston one night and pretty sure I witnessed some sort of UFO event.
2. Going to a strip club in Houston for a friend's bachelor party in the mid-1990s and a girl from my high school who everyone wanted to bang was working there and was extremely naked.
3. Hearing that the Suns had taken Jalen Green for Kevin Durant.

#3 is by far the most unbelievable. A seven-team deal where the Suns did not get Alpern Sengun, did not get Amen Thompson, hell didn't even get Jabari Smith for one of the greatest players of all time. Instead they got Jalen "they've got to start going in sometime" Green, Dillon Brooks, Khaman Maluach, who I'd like to see get married to Chris Kaman, so he can be Khaman Kaman, two second-round draft picks this year, one next year, and one in 2032, when I will be almost 60 years old and Jalen Green will still suck.

Welcome to the 2025-2026 Houston Rockets official season thread!

Of course that highway robbery was tempered by Fred Van Vleet's mysterious ACL injury 3 weeks ago. I'm told it was during an "unofficial team workout in the Bahamas." It sounds like the time Moises Alou fell off a treadmill or when Jeff Kent broke his wrist "washing his truck" but was probably actually riding a motorcycle.

Well, FVV was a gamer, and we'll have to get past his injury. Hopefully with a whole lot of Amen Thompson running the point, or with Reed Shepperd remembering he's supposed to be good at basketball, and not just while playing in the Rio Grande Valley.

The betting line on Houston wins pre-FVV was 53.5, now it's down to 52.5. The team that sucked ass shooting the ball last year put 140 on the Jazz in a preseason game earlier tonight. They were 53.6% from the field and hit 13 three-pointers. Of course that's preseason vs. the Jazz. The starting 5 looks like Durant (wearing #7), Jabari, Amen, Sengun, and Reed Shepperd right now. Durant is wearing #7, clearly to honor Carl Herrera from the 94-95 title teams.

So yeah, Kevin Durant plays for the Rockets now. We're one Serge Ibaka trade away from having had all four of the Thunder's best players of the past decade on the team at some point Durant, Westbrook, and Harden all check the bingo card. Durant is old, but he dropped 26.6 a game last year and he's never averaged less than 25.3 per game since his rookie year. He played for the Seattle Supersonics that year. So, a bit ago.

Questions abound for team chemistry. Will Durant's presence slow the maturation of Amen Thompson? Is Sengun still going to get his looks inside? Should Reed Shepperd legally change his name to Matt Maloney?

Let's not forget about the smaller, but perhaps shrewder deal for Dorian Finney-Smith. He's still recovering from ankle surgery, and he's already 32, so that 4-year deal is already looking kind of iffy. Regardless when he's on, he's such a great glue guy, what you need especially with Brooks moving on.

What the team really needs is health. My low-key favorite Rocket Tari Eason missed 25 games last year. So did Jabari. Amen missed 13. Van Vleet is obviously out all year after missing 22 games in 2024-2025. But Jalen Green played all 82. He was like Christian Walker for the Astros. The one guy you wouldn't mind going on the DL was Mr. Atlas all year.

The team also added Josh Okogie, whoever the hell that is, and Clint Capela. I assumed Capela was like 50 when I heard that news. Turns out, he won't even be 32 until the playoffs never year. Fun fact, he was born May 18, 1994 during the Rockets-Suns' epic WCSF clash. Capela was 34 days old when the Rockets won the title over the Knicks. Okogie is 27, and is a 6-4 shooting guard. The best thing about him is one of his nicknames is Obi-Wan Okogie.

In addition to Brooks and Green, the Rockets sent Cam Whitmore packing in the most obvious "go away" trade of all time. He's back home with the Bullets now. I'm sure he'll be fine.

The Rockets open the season in style with a nationally-televised game at OKC on Tuesday, October 21 as the league returns to the best place it ever existed NBC, complete with the theme song that gave me so many chills during the 90s when no team around could stop our boys.

I'll be rolling out Rockets/NBA Bingo in a week or so. It's a chance to stay a lot more involved, have fun, and make some coin on the side. I did it for the Astros in 2024 as a joke when they started off so poorly, but we played it for real this year with 41 people making picks and the top guys splitting $100.

We're doing it on the Texans thread as well. We've got 24 playing and $250 in prize money.

I'll post the explainer and the rules a week before the regular season starts.

IN!!!!

Preseason games have been pretty fun so far. Lots of guys have looked impressive, the team is sharing the basketball, we are making free throws and we got some guy named Durant.

While losing FVV was a major blow, Alpi appears ready to become the focal point of the offense (13 assists tonight).

I'm ready for the season to get rolling. Thanks for starting the thread Porkch...uh, I mean...Drunk betting guy...

Reed and/or Amen bringing the ball may work but Sengun needs to be the one that sets the table in a half-court set. Now having three bigs rostered makes a lot more since. Hope FVV can get back for the playoffs.

Seeing KD in uniform is surreal. Those buckets still come so easy for him, it's crazy. Went from +850 to +1200 to go all the way, but the homer in me says - sigh - this is year!

8. Houston Rockets (45-37)

One of the biggest questions of the offseason is whether Houston leaned too hard into the two-center frontcourt look that gave it some of its best minutes in the 2025 playoffs. Yes, the trade for Kevin Durant is the headline move of the Rockets' offseason, for obvious reasons, but when the games start, I'm going to be wondering about the functionality of their huge playing rotation.

The Rockets already employ an All-Star center in Alperen engn and traded for Durant, who is best suited for power forward at 37. But that didn't stop them from also signing Steven Adams for three years and $39 million and Dorian Finney-Smith for four years and $54 million. Or extending Jabari Smith Jr. for five years and $122 million. Or signing Clint Capela for three years and $21 million. Or adding Jeff Green for insurance.

This, mind you, is a team that also employs three mean, tough wings with iffy shooting profiles, ones who often produce their best minutes as undersized power forwards (Tari Eason, Jae'Sean Tate and Josh Okogie). Finally, the team's best young player, Amen Thompson, was the starting power forward for much of last season.
How, exactly, does this work? Especially now that the one good guard on the roster, Fred VanVleet, is out for the season with a torn ACL?

Presumably, Thompson will be the key, essentially operating as a full-time point guard regardless of who he checks at the other end, and VanVleet's injury could be an opportunity to experiment with lineups that otherwise might not have seen daylight. Up front, one supposes the Rockets might try starting Smith and Durant as bookend forwards, but neither is particularly comfortable chasing on the perimeter, and Smith's theoretical stretch game and mismatch post-up potential are limited by a near-total inability to dribble.

On paper, the Rockets also only have two guards besides Thompson, and one of them will have to play heavy minutes with the second group at the very least. That brings up another key question: Can Reed Sheppard play?
The third pick in the 2024 draft was awesome in 2024 summer league but hardly tasted the court last season and showed more warts in his 2025 Vegas stint. On the other hand, his deep shooting and knack for steals would go a long way toward solving some rotational and floor-spacing puzzles. If Sheppard can't deliver, Aaron Holiday gives Houston a replacement-level floor but not much more than that.

And yet, on sheer talent, this team looks like a beast, especially if Durant can maintain an All-Star level. Thompson can't shoot but drops jaws nightly with his athleticism and defense, engn and Eason are already a problem and still young enough to get significantly better, and if Sheppard is playable, it's a true 10-deep roster, with a third center (Capela) better than many teams' backups.

Bigger picture, the Rockets are still in the midst of the "hard decisions" era in their development. Eason is up for an extension, and Thompson will be due for a possible max extension deal a year from now. Houston already cashed in its Cam Whitmore stock because it had nowhere to play him, and it put Jalen Green into the Durant deal; it may need another consolidation move if it plans on bringing back Durant (also a free agent in 2026 but seemingly likely to extend his deal). Smith's contract extension, in part, seems a bit like Jalen Green's in that it enables him to be matching salary next summer.

The other hard decision will be whether to make another chips-in move like the one for Durant, because Houston's asset pool remains amazing. The Rockets have two unprotected first-round picks from Phoenix, in 2027 and 2029, that are perhaps the sweetest trade assets any contender owns, plus a pick swap with lowly Brooklyn in 2027. If the right player becomes available, they can pounce, and that's their best upside scenario for the coming season. One argument against extending Eason is to keep him as a tradeable contract for in-season work, especially because the Rockets have no expiring money.

Even in the worst case, Houston will be good. Things may be clunky at times as they work out the fit issues, especially early in the season and without VanVleet, but the Rockets will remain a must-watch due to the likes of Thompson and engn joining forces with Durant. I'm less bullish on this team than some, and they definitely overdid it on frontcourt additions that left them high and dry in the backcourt when VanVleet got hurt. Still: If they can pull off one more big trade, watch out.

Looking ahead at the schedule beyond opening night, there are a lot of wins to be had in there if they can get off to a fast start despite 7 of the first 10 being road games.

    10/21 @ OKC
    10/24 v DET 44-38 last year
    10/27 @ BKN 26-56 last year
    10/29 @ TOR 30-52 last year
11/1 @ BOS 61-21 last year, but no Tatum
    11/3 DAL 39-43 last year
    11/5 @ MEM 48-34 last year
    11/7 @ SA 34-48 last year
    11/9 @ MIL 48-34 last year
    11/12 WASH 18-64 last year

They should be the favorite in everything except opening night and perhaps @ Milwaukee. I have a lot of nerves about the offense and what vague area Durant will stand on defense, but it's just another crazy case of the all-time greats that have played for this franchise.

Doesn't look like an option for an extra year. Just adding two years to this year, but he could opt out after one. $45M/year is good value for him as long as he stays healthy. He's never gonna lose his shot.

That's about 26% of the cap, and he could have made 35%.

Opens up some flexibility/money for Tari.

We locked up a top 10 NBA player at a price lower than his market value. Thats another great piece of work by Stone and co.

At the same time it says alot about KDs mindset and his comfort with the organization. You can tell he likes the culture and character of the team/coaches and wants to prioritize organizational success over maxing his paycheck.

The team has looked very focused in preseason and everyone seems to be playing really well. Lets hope that it carries into the regular season. This is probably the most excited I've been for a Rockets season to start in a very very long time.

Also, as one of the 5 people who regularly post on Rockets threads, I'd like to see that Bingo post come back. I'm not going to participate myself, but its clearly related to the Rockets/NBA and it drives up engagement on this thread. I don't see what would have been so problematic about it.
