I'm still iffy on the show, but regardless, Timothy Olyphant is killing it.

It's not perfect, but I'm really enjoying it. And the way they are doing the kids is, while again not perfect, really interesting.

Slightly: eager to belong, easily manipulated
Smee: typical dumbass boy
Tootles/Isaac: super smart kid
Curly: gunner who wants to be valued (and isn't…that will blow up)
Nibs: the broken kid
And Wendy…smart, ambitious, rebellious.

All being led by Kirsh, who seems deeply ambivalent about them.

I have 4 kids of my own, and am a scout leader. I'm around a lot of young teens. You see all these types.

Then the power dynamics at Prodigy…the boy genius, the scientists trying to do right, the old man trying to hold it all together (bet his character expands).

The brother is the weakest part of the story.

Anyone else think the old British guy is also a synth? The way he caught the ball that Boy bounced at him was almost exactly like what Wendy did when he threw it hard at her earlier.

Interesting theory! Makes sense.

Yep, I've been assuming that.

Yep, I've been assuming that.

I've been struggling with that. He's more robotic than Kirsh but I haven't been able to tell if it's because he's a synth or just too British.

I think he's a synth too, but BK treats Kirsh like dirt, and seeks out the old man's opinion and doesn't cavalierly upbraid him.

Odd juxtaposition if he's a synth.

I haven't read the thread to avoid spoilers. I enjoy the Alien universe, love most of what Noah Hawley and Olyphant do.

Thinking of starting this. Worth it?

I rank Alien as the best movie of its type ever made. It will never be matched. I have had a few qualms about this, but overall I am enjoying Alien: Earth.

It's fun. Olyphant is still being annoyed by a Boy[d] character, but he's more stoic about it.

What type are you referring to? Space horror? Not sure there are many of those.

I'm not Cinco Ranch, but I'm in agreement with him.

I'd say the type is sci-fi horror/suspense. I think that category can run the gamut from Alien to Terminator, and Alien is probably the best ever made.

Classic monster movie. I consider it to be the best science fiction movie ever made, but it also has definite horror elements.

I agree with this it's definitely sci-fi suspense/horror and Aliens I'd put as sci-fi action. I rewatched Jaws a few weeks ago and Alien feels a lot like Jaws with the sense of overwhelming dread they're both able to instill in the audience. They're two of my favorite movies ever made, I don't know that either could be improved upon. They're both basically perfect.

Now we understand why Morrow wants to go there.

Pretty good episode.

Worst science officer ever lol. She literally single-handedly took down the ship with her reckless lab shenanigans. Brought food and drink into a bio lab and did not properly secure specimens like three separate times within very short succession.

Who could of expected that aliens onboard a ship named Maginot would break through containment?

The sound design on this episode was really bad. So many characters mumbling or whispering or having cross talk in the background that could barely be heard. Finally had to turn on closed captioning.

Now that we know Boy Kavalier was a part of the sabotage of the Maginot from the beginning him recklessly sending the kid hybrids into the wreck makes a lot more sense.

I thought the creepy bald Asian dude was a synth. Guess not.

Just that Maginot episode plus a little more would have made a pretty good Alien franchise movie.

Was everyone on the Maginot incompetent at their job except Morrow?

Pumpkins!

Yeah

How in the world did they capture all those creatures when they look like imbeciles throughout this episode.

I think my favorite scene was the engineer that was takin over by the eyeball alien attacking the alien.

Great catch!

That eyectopus continues to impress with its intelligence and ferocity. I think it would make a great stuffed animal or maybe a pool float.

The little bloodsuckers going in and attaching themselves to the esophagus & spraying a cloud of deadly mist was a nice touch.

This episode got camera angles galore: through the grates, high angles, etc.
But most of all, there were lots of little micro-tension builders & feints: the shadow of the chain dropping makes you think it's a Xeno tail; the bloodsucker larvae in the drink cup being carried around; the bloodsucker in the sandwich, etc. I'm sure there's more.

I hope they do something with the Little Shop of Alien Horrors plant.

I love the way they've turned Morrow into a completely sympathetic character. Introducing his daughter (& subsequently her loss) was a good way for us to connect with him. Rooting for the guy.

Agreed, and Boy K does not care about the Lost Boys. If they perish, he will make new ones.

Same, but he kept smoking so I ruled it out.

For real! The XO turned captain who was banging her crewmate was completely inept. The science officer hosed everyone. The doctor was an addict and a liability. I was relieved when they all bought it.

Incompetence seems to be a highly valued quality for Weyland-Yutani HR.

The XO-Captain tried to assert herself a couple of times, but just couldn't seem to command complete respect. And then she fell apart after the deaths in the med bay.

The science officer violated likely every safety protocol known to mankind.

The doctor came across as a fraud. Again, safety protocols. You are operating on someone with an unknown thing in the chest. No safety equipment at all. So that thing ejects a poison gas and bam, all dead.

The senior engineer seemed like a decent enough character, but the junior trainee was an uneducated moron. Didn't know basic words but you expect me to believe this kid can be trained in an engineering capacity?

Seriously, no real company would ever hire any of these buffoons to work on a rig or similar environment. I never had thoughts like these about the characters in Alien/Aliens/Alien3. Prometheus was really the first time I saw this kind of idiocy in the characters, notably the two clowns who first encountered the eel thing and thought it would be fun to play with it. Oh, Alien: Resurrection was peopled with cartoon characters, but that movie was overall a stinking pile of *****

Having said all of that, I am still enjoying Alien: Earth.

The way I've chosen to view the incompetence of the crew is because of what Morrow said. WY paid them for their lives because they're gone for so long that everything and everyone they knew will be dead and gone by the time they get back. How many of the best and brightest are going to sign up for that when the planet isn't exactly a wasteland or anything that at least on the surface looks like a place you don't want to escape from? That can be true of everyone on the ship from the captain to the apprentice and including the science officer and the doctor. None of them appear to be first round picks if you're putting together a crew. This also includes the saboteur from Prodigy, did anyone think it looked like he really thought this through? Did he really think he was going to survive this ordeal? Morrow appears to be the smartest guy on the ship, everyone else are basically idiots.

My one issue with the episode is if Boy Kavalier was born well after this flight even launched how is he supposed to covertly find out what the ship is doing, find someone on board, flip them, and then have them put this plan together during the return? Maybe this was set in motion by the old man well before Boy Kavalier came along or maybe I missed something in the episode. That's what's bothered me way more than how dumb the crew is.

I assumed the Boy K and saboteur deal was facilitated via "ship to shore" communication.

I have no problem with the incompetence of the crew of this ship for a few reasons.

It was a 65 year mission. Those are the kind of people that would sign up for something such as this.

Alien had an intelligent crew but it was short and a mining mission.

Also a crew such as this is easier to control and the company needed people such as this for such a long mission.
jeffk
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Only thing I could figure was that maybe this crew worked in conjunction with some other militarized group to collect all these specimens and/or they were just the study and return team. No way they could have collected them all themselves without dying.
LB12Diamond
How long do you want to ignore this user?

The show did say several people died collecting them. The sabotage guy's wife being one of them.
jeffk

Yeah, I remember that. But there's no way this group are somehow the one's responsible for successfully capturing all these specimens.

I feel like this universe would be ripe with incompetent employees when the world they live in seems pretty dystopian and the companies seemingly see no consequences for hiring such bad workers when there is a long line of willing bodies up next

Love Alien shows but since I was a kid I never understood why so many extra steps to create an Alien…

Alien lays egg?
Egg only opens up when life form gets close
When egg opens, spider/stingray climbs up and attaches it to life forms face
Spider/stingray inserts tube into life form to release another life form (a baby Alien)
Baby alien gets inside of another life form to incubate
Once baby Alien incubates long enough, it rips its way out of 2nd life form
New toddler Alien gets away and grows on its own

Makes for fun sci fi but makes zero sense, especially for the spider/stingray who grows in the egg and once it comes out and pumps a baby alien into someone, it dies.
