What causes algae growth in pools and how to stop it

"What you are seeing is residual algae from the supply lines," communications director Kate Martin said in a statement to CNN. The supply lines had been sitting dormant for eight weeks while construction was taking place, she explained.

This is part of the "normal startup process," according to Martin, and in speaking with experts, the same is true for backyard swimming pools, which can create the ideal environment for algae growth.

man you guys are desparate to try and "Get Trump!".

Sorry, its leftover problems from Obama. Trump is fixing it.

Maybe reddit is not the best place for you guys to get your talking points.

The fact that people believe the "residual algae" makes the whole thing even funnier. It is almost as funny as when maga people talk about "talking points".

Just saw something about the police have reports that the other night two people were dumping 5 gal buckets of algae into the pond.

Right, so then you understand that if you start up a pool that's been sitting idle and had a non-functioning filtration system because it was not designed to process raw sewage from the Potomac, then you would understand it takes a bit to get the chemicals balanced.

Instead, gullible folks think Trump messed up and ruined Obama's sewage filled had to be drained several months of the year leaky cracking cesspool.

Of course, Orange Man Bad is easier.

BREAKING: The US Parks Police have apprehended two Antifa operatives caught on camera dumping buckets full of algae into the Reflecting Pool.
The incident happened at about 3 AM on Sunday night. Cameras caught a pickup truck entering the National Mall carrying the two men and about half a dozen buckets of what environmental experts are calling an extremely aggressive form of Georgia algae.
"As of now they're not cooperating," said USPP Captain Joseph Barron, "But we have them on film. Justice will be served."
Barron believes he can get the suspects to tell them who funded the operation and what they have planned next.
"It's that or ten years in prison. They've caused millions in damage.

Easier than that...you take cool nutrient rich water and let it flow into a shallow pool where it is easily heated up by sunlight and the algae takes off and blooms until they use up the available nutrients and oxygen. Then it dies and releases the nutrient back into the water to start the cycle over again. You can break the cycle by removing the algae as it blooms after it has used up the available nutrients.

I imagine the ozone bubblers probably need some time to adjust and the overall system to stablize.

The dark blue lining probably isn't helping things. Water will still appear blue to the human eye with a light gray liner because of how light refracts in sunlight and because physics is still a thing.

The darker lining will absorb heat and radiate it back into the water. Warming water full of nutrients will bloom with algae. It is just what happens. Once the water temp levels off and the nutrient load is stabilized/reduced, the systems they put in should keep it from happening further.

I'm happy they tried to fix the pool. I'd like all our monuments kept in good shape (even if I don't think we need new ones covered in gold statues)

BUT, if Trump is going to send out 1000 truth social messages blasting Obama and Biden for the reflecting pool being a mess, then he should be thick skinned enough to take some crap when it instantly turns green after his attempted fix

Just as fake as Trump messed this up and that it was nothing but a kickback scheme to start with.

Sometimes both sides for fake stuff.

Meanwhile, multiple sources have confirmed what's going on is just part of the pool restart.

Again. Trump brings this on himself by being a dick about absolutely everything. Fixing the pool is great. Talking constant **** makes people happy to find opportunities to point and laugh.

Maybe you could take a break from attacking. It's what makes the term TDS so apt.

I don't come where everyday and post nonstop about the wonderful world of Trump. I do come here and spend an awful lot amount of time sorting out facts and TDS fiction, like right here in this thread over and over again.

Go back to the OP. From the earliest announcement of this project it's been nothing but fake attack after fake attack. Trump got some numbers wrong, but why would one worry when the left will indeed fact check every penny. The procurement process? Seems no issues there. The competency of the company? Yep, they were the right people. Heck someone tried to argue about it not being woman owned even though it clearly is.

Again, it's not me who needs to take a moment. It's those who cannot go a single day without running to tell f16 that's Trumps farts were a bit cabbagee today.

Yes. It is green, and the article provided the explanation for why it is green directly from the contractors doing the work. It isn't a failure, it is exactly what was expected when it was refilled with algae filled water that was in the existing pipes without the full ozone system being installed yet. As I said previously, when you take cool water with algae and nutrients in it and put it in a shallow pool exposed to sunshine where it can warm rapidly, you will get an algae bloom. The park service folks are gathering the algae that developed to remove it so that when the ozone system is fully installed and turned on, they don't have big masses of dead algae providing a steady supply of nutrients. Same **** that happens if you fill a swimming pool with creek water and then wait two weeks before turning on the filter system and adding chemicals.

So there's no way this could have been prevented? The algae was going to happen no matter who did the work or whatever?

Note: not a gotcha question, just trying to make my question make sense.

So many things can affect the water. A wind from a certain direction could have dropped an unusual amount of tong organic matter on there as the systems were being started up and adjusted. Pipes could have developed more "sludge" than expected during a shut down.

Temperatures, cloud cover, etc all could be culprits.

But yes when you startup any water feature like this, particularly one of this size, one expects to have to tweak the settings a bit, particularly when deploying a new solution.

There was no easy non-chemical way to go in and treat the water in the pipes while the pool was empty and the pipes were closed. If you know your first batch of water is going to have algae, you don't want to put in the permanent system that will get in the way of removing that first batch of algae. You put in the water, let the algae consume the nutrients, put in the temp treatment to kill it, remove it so it doesn't feed another bloom as it degrades, then you put in the permanent ozone bubblers to keep it from coming back. Probably could have been explained ahead of time, but nobody would have listened anyway. I suspect they were a bit rushed too trying to get it refilled in time for the big party last weekend. Doing it in the spring as temps warm up into the 90s makes it a harder task too.
