Speaking of porter, I poured myself a glass of homebrewed porter this evening.

Anyone ever had any of the Choc Beer. It's brewed in Krebs, OK?

Was wondering if it's sold in Texas.

Good on you for trying new styles. I can't say that I even have a go-to beer nowadays. Too much interesting stuff out there!

+1 here. I think that's a good thing.

I have seen it appear in the last few months at Central Market here in Dallas. I'd assume you can find it a few other NTX places. I haven't tried it yet, but hear they make sme pretty quality stuff. Funny...from a state that's harder than ours to produce.

It's choc for Choctaw, not chocolate. I made that mistake at first glance

Cool. I'm in Dallas too. Sounds like I might be able to find it then.

Drank some Flying Dog In Heat Wheat Tonight. I really enjoyed it, it reminds me of my house Bavarian Hefeweizen. Very yeasty/ wheaty with banana/ clove notes and a little orange to boot.

Very nice...I recommend.

Edit: The dog on that label cracks me up.

that's a fav of my wife, one of the few american wheats she really likes. she's a fan of the germans. well their wheat beers.. not germans themselves! such horrible things they did. bombing moons and such..

Shiner 102 is out. It's a filtered double wheat beer. Tasty and smooth. A little darker than a pilsner, and not as strong flavored as most shiner beers. I like it. Out of 5 stars, I'd give it 4.25.

Deschutes Abyss is now at the HEB on Holleman. I think it was about 13.50 for the 22oz bottle.

Swamp,

What yeast did you use? I am trying to get more than one batch per vial and am definitely using WLP051 for an Arrogant ******* clone. I was thinking about doing an American Wheat with it as well. It seems to be a more fruity version of a California Ale yeast.

I'm looking for some suggestions TexAgs. I'm looking to get my dad something along the lines of a beer sampler or something interesting/unusual for beer drinkers. The local stores and supermarkets don't carry much beyond the usual horse piss. Anyone have some ideas?

Give him a 6 pack of Real Ale's sampler. Another good option would be New Belgium's 12 pack sampler. It includes the Ranger IPA & 1554 which are both excellent.

Been looking for this in Austin for quite awhile. I've requested it at Specs multiple times to no avail. They keep saying they are going to get it but never do.

I was gonna get a Bobby M sight glass, but i head they'd melt if you really put the jets to your keggle and it was too low.

In other news, those of you that were asking about my Black IPA, it's freakin' awesome, even drinking green. I don't have the recipe in front of me at the moment, though.

Swamp/62 - for the "sightglass" on my HLT I installed two 90* elbows with barbed ends. between the two ends I have a piece of clear liquid tubing with tick marks on the keg for gallons.

Total cost: ~$5

What connections do you guys use between steps? I was thinking something quick connect, but I guess that tightening down hose clamps every time wouldn't be horrible.

that's pretty good idea gator..

i do like the bobby_m's w/ thermom. though, for $40, that's pretty cheap. AC, I've heard some people just put them up higher a bit.. I figured I'd put mine about 3 gallons up.. i'll never need to see less than that... and puts it several inches from bottom.

I used US05. I fermented at 62. It comes out really clean tasting.

Here it is, brewed on the 16th, no secondary, kegged and carbed on the 27th, drinking on the 28th.

That's Bobby's kit. I should have ordered the one for straight walled pots. I ordered the one for a keg which has a little lean to it to make up for the radius at the bottom of the keg. Too much lean for my application but it will be all right.

Mine takes 2.5 gallons in my pot before any water is visible in the sight glass.

I used to use the hose clamp method. Believe me, it was a pain.

Now I use these. I put the males on my stuff (chiller, keggles, sparge arm, mash tun). Put the females on hoses. Saves money. They are the cats ass.

Had a group brew session yesterday. I did five gallons of Edmund Fitzgerald porter clone. Weird hippie dude did a beer using no hops but bayberry and rhododendron and stuff.

I'll stick to the porter.

Your own recipe, or kit?
AggieChemist
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's Austin Homebrew's recipe. I ordered their kit a few years ago and it's really close to the original. Now I just order the ingredients... I paid for the intellectual property of thier recipe once.

Sorry for the delay. My first homebrew was good, at least once I learned how to poor it out of a bottle right! I didn't know about leaving the "mess" in the bottom of the bottle in my first, and it sort of had me wondering the the hell that was. I looked up how to avoid it, learned my lesson and moved on. Every one after was much better. My only real complaint is that it doesn't seem as strong as I thought it was going ot be. But the taste is good, so I'm happy.

I did take a pic:

Next up, I'm thinking to try a noble trappist recipe (from mid-west as well). I think I'll be able to do better next time.

I posted this before, but I thought I would update that HB 660 seems to be gaining attention in this legislature. HB 660 is the bill that has been introduced that would allow brewpubs to sell to distributors meaning that us craft brew fans can have more options at the grocery store and local bars.

Here again is the link to the blog about HB 660's progress.

http://brewednotbattered.wordpress.com/2011/01/31/day-21-i-support-hb-660/

The owner of Freetail Brewery is the man heading up the effort and posts daily. He even has a form letter that you can copy and send to your rep in support of the bill.

Let's hope this happens or else we'll have to wait another two years for another chance.
