you know i'm undecided on the two types of wheats. again, they just aren't my favorite style. I can drink them, but I just don't do very often. Usually when just finishing my wife's last beer of the night

So I just started drinking a batch of AHS Session Series Dunkelweizen which I added a peach & pecan extract to.

The beer completely lacks a hop flavor. It's very carbonated... like a soda and the extract flavor is overwhelming. I'm sorely disappointed in this batch. It's practically undrinkable.

that sucks. gotta say, out of 20 batches now, i've had some that i wasn't crazy about, but none that i couldn't find people to drink and enjoy.

Little off topic, but a buddy of mine and me want to get into homebrewing. We have zero equipment. Is a beginner kit like http://www.midwestsupplies.com/brewing-basics-equipment-kit.html and a brew pot the best way to start or is it best to piece some better equipment together because you'll be throwing that stuff out in a month. I really just want to do pale ales and IPA's right now.

What brew pot would you recommend? Seems like a piece you definitely don't want to skimp on.

You should check out Lowes and Home Depot for turkey fryers on clearance. You can maybe get one with a Stainless pot for a good deal now.

just went to rockwells tavern again out on the NW side (telge near 290)
this place is great. 150 beers they have now, and now they have draft.
They had the dogfish head Chateau Jiahu on tap.. a highly special release.. she said there are only two kegs in texas, she has one of em. this was the beer featured on the last episode of brew masters.

little info, this bar has a on/off site license, which means, you can actually buy any bottle of beer they have and take it home. and here in a couple weeks she said, they'll have growlers, and you'll be able to fill those as well to take home. i didn't know this was an option in texas.. but apparently so.

no label brewing will be there friday 7-9.. great chance to try some of their beers w/o driving out to katy.

i think i may stop by here more often.. sucks you have to take 290 to get out there though.
normally i carpool to work, and get dropped off at louetta/249, so from there its just 10 min.

Isle... weissbiers are generally hop-neutral. they usually have a bittering addition and nothing else. Dunkelweissen is a very malty style.

Last night I had a dogfishead 90 minute IPA and an Old Dominion Oak barrel stout.

The OD OBS I thought was very poor a year ago, but I've been aging a couple bottles, and the one last night had really come into its own. I was impressed.

aggielax48, check out amazon for some SS brewpots. I got one on there for WAY cheaper than any store.

austinhomebrew.com has a good beginner kit that has everything you need. I think it runs about $120.

I found these two at Central Market in Dallas yesterday. The Red Chair was a solid beer. The Bock was so/so inho.

The one I had was a NW Pale Ale and it looks like yours is an IPA...perhaps it's the same and just marketing??

I've had the Hop Trip and Hop in the Dark as well. All very very good.

It is a seasonal beer...from the website:

quote:
Red Chair NWPA is named after the oldest operating lift at Mt. Bachelor here in Central Oregon. And just as the locals line up for that fabled mountain ride, they flock to our Bend brew pub whenever it goes on tap. One thing we've learned, "when the brew pub talks, listen." For the past two decades, the serious beer fanatics down there seldom miss when we've hit on something truly special.

What makes this copper colored beauty so wildly popular? As a debut Northwest Pale Ale, it's an adventure all its own. It has a plush body with satiny caramel flavors derived from seven varieties of malt. Yet, despite it all, it remains a hop-forward ale with that distinctive citrusy punch. Just minus any mouth-puckering bitterness.

Found the answer...

They are the same beer, just different packaging. We felt that Red Chair was not quite bitter enough for an IPA but more interesting than a traditional pale so we renamed the style to NW Pale Ale.

hah there you go. i wonder how many times that has happened in the past.. brewery releases beer, and changed style and label down the road?

Tonight's beers are Big Sky's Trout Slayer pale ale (excellent) and Stevens Point's Whole Hog imperial pilsner (forgettable).

I gotta say, Big Sky Brewing Co. has the best labels (speaking as an outdoorsman) and some of the best names for their beers.

i picked up a 6 last week of the Stout. its good, but id say its closer to a porter. its dark, chocolatey/coffe-esque, but its not very creamy.
Gator2_01
How long do you want to ignore this user?
dry stouts aren't supposed to be creamy. milk stouts on the other hand get the creamy mouthfeel and body from the inclusion of lactose powder in the boil.

I think a creamy mouthfeel is completely appropriate for a dry stout.

I add flaked barley to mine to add body and head retention. I would not term mine as creamy, maybe silky would be a more appropriate descriptor.

fair enough, the term "creamy" instantly makes me think lactose in a stout.

I've had english bitters served on nitro that were like velvet in your mouth. "Creamy" is definitely not restricted to stouts.

Imperial Pilsner = Malt Liquor???
rononeill
How long do you want to ignore this user?
i may have misused the term - i enjoy good beer, but am not up on the vocabulary. not saying guinness is the end-all-be-all stout, but i feel the "texture" is reasonably representative of what a stout carries. going back to the St. Arnolds, I'd categorize it w/ an Optimator type texture.

I'm not seeing this.. i clicked on the link, there is a listing of that pot for $75, but, click on link (woodstove outlet), and there is no pot.

I think $120 is the cheapest this pot gets, i'm looking at getting one myself, and adding a valve/thermometer/sight glass
