I was able to try the Dogfish 90 minute IPA this past weekend for the first time. Great stuff. And if you can find it, I recommend the Blue Heron Pale Ale from Mendocino Brewing Co. Excellent hoppy beer.

Hopped Up - an IPA based loosely upon Victory Hop Devil, dry-hopped in the fermenter with 1 oz Amarillo pellets and kegged yesterday with 1 oz leaf Cascade in a muslin bag suspended from the dip tube. Will report on this one at a later date.

OK! Had the first half-pint last night, still not carb'ed completely but couldn't wait. Very big citrus/grapefruit taste with a great bitter finish. I think this one is a keeper, although I believe I'll ditch the Amarillo used for bittering go with a more piney hop, such as Simcoe or Chinook. I know that Amarillo and Cascade together = big grapefruit taste, so I need to tweak this a bit. But still a very nice IPA I've managed to put together.

On tap in the garage:

Buster's summer ale: light lawnmower made with Saaz

Lake Walk Pale Ale: Simcoe and Amarillo hoppy pale

Sour stout: not too bad for my first sour, but not great

Silver Dollar Porter: tried a recipe from the homebrew Bible, one batch with american ale yeast, one batch with british ale. I like the british a bit better.

Big arse porter: 7.5%ABV, pretty good.

Applewine: keep the boss happy

In the fridge:

Hofbrau Octoberfest,
Paulner Octoberfest,
Buried Hatchet Stout,
Oskar Blues Gordon,
Imperial,
Punkin from Dogfish

Long term storage: brown sour ale, Belgian Dubble

Do you have all the tubes, siphons, carboys, etc. set aside for only sours? If not, you'll start getting sour notes in all your beers.

Picked up 2 cases of Jubelale yesterday.

Also found the Widmer Reserve Brrrboun, their winter Brrr aged 4 months in whisky barrels. $14 for a 22, but couldn't resist.

I'll be drinking these for the Ranger game tonight!

Just a quicky for starters.

I Absolutely Love Kosmos Reserve. I emailed Shiner about getting it in 6 packs or larger and they politely told me to buy more Family Reunion.

I regularly drink Black Lager and Bock at the house.

I enjoy the hell out of Guinness, 1554, New Castle Brown Ale, and Bass as well.

Recently I have tried some from the Breckenridge brewery. Their Avalanche Ale and Oatmeal Stout are great.

Great Thread!

My 21st birthday, by brother and bro-in-law took me to the St. Arnolds brewery. In the words of my 4 year old niece, "thas a happy place." My favorite is their Christmas Ale, but you can't go wrong with some Fancy Lawnmower.

I also love Kosmos Reserve. There is a pizza place in Corpus (BJ's) that has a dandy collection of brews, and one of them was Kosmos. I must have had 7. At least that's what the police report said...

I'll knock down a Shiner bock with anybody, anytime, but Ziegen is also a favorite heavy.
edit: "heavy" compared to the unleaded standard big names

My brothers homebrew whenever they can, and our favorite hands down has been a cream stout that we lovingly named "Sexy Mother Earth." That was some TASTY beer, and we will definitely keep replicating that batch.

Bad thing about a thread about beer, is it makes me want to buy more beer. Currently drinking my Bohemian Pilsner watching the Rangers kick ass. (wish it would clarify more).

Drinking some DFH 60 min IPA at the moment. I also bought a sixer of Brooklyn's Pennant Ale '55 to celebrate the Rangers' first pennant win in history.

Went to HEB and Spec's today and both were out of St. Arnolds's Oktoberfest, so I got Spaten. I also picked up St. Arnold's Christmas Ale, which I've never tried. Looking forward to it.

Christams Ale is good stuff - only SA beer I really care for.

It's also good mixed 50/50 with their Elissa IPA to make a "Sailing Santa"

It's been a while since I had a regular Guinness, so I thought I'd throw one down last night. I guess my taste buds for beer have become more refined, because that Guinness tasted watered down & weak. I don't think I'll every have it again. Tell me why people think it's the best stuff on earth?!

I recall a texags poster claiming that guinness was his favorite light beer.

Guinness is only 4.2% abv, which is really low.

there are other stouts which are higher abv, maybe try those if you think Guinness is watered down. even if it's the guinness foreign extra stout, which comes in at 7.5%

I'm always amazed at such refined palates that beer brewers tend to have. I either love it, really like it, like it, or I don't, and that's my scale. I should do a little more reading up, I suppose.

Southern star brewery in Conroe has good beer. HEB sells it. I like the bombshell blonde ale and their stout.

Shiner, miller lite, bud, modelo especial, saint arnolds, and the list goes on. Guiness. Tres pistoles is a good triple.

So far, just a few Spaten Oktoberfests.

This week, I've been groovin' on Victory Prima Pils, Labatt Blue (evidently Spec's got a case or two that wasn't so damned sweet), and Kronenbourg 1664. The Victory is bit hoppier than Sam Adams Boston Lager, without the caramel tones. The Kronenbourg was very light, but still worth trying.

Last week it was St. Arnold Octoberfest. Nice, but I like their Lawnmower Kölsch, and Special Pils better.

Speaking of Kölsch, I bet few of you have tried Shiner's Kölsch. It has a horned toad on the olive-drab label, and like most of the Shiner lineup, it has a bit of a skunky aftertaste, but its crisper than bock. Keep it very cold.

I still have a bottle of Sam Adams Imperial Pilsner from when it came out: I drank 4 bottles in 2½ years, and gave one to a friend. That was way too much hops for me. Also still have a couple Real Ale Full Moon Pale Rye Ales in the back of the fridge that I did not like.

Recently tried Duvel, and having been warned, I still found it too sweet. Sweeter than Asahi.

Also recently found Little Kings. I grew up loving it, and was particularly fond of the 64oz size (high school hi-jinks). But that was then, and now the cream ale is pretty terrible. I stumbled upon Dixie the same visit to Spec's. What was once my favorite lager, aged in cypress casks, is now cheap rubbish. And although Katrina damaged their brewery, they were at the brink of shutting down since around 2000 or so. I hadn't seen it in Texas since about 1999 or 2000.

My Shiner bottle collection. I've got some cool ones thanks to MouthBQ98 and Opie.

The Kolsh bottle I held onto... As far as I know this is the last bottle they put Kolsh in.

An old Summer Stock (kolsh) bottle which MouthBQ generously donated to my collection, along with a few other bottles.
