Fair, my bigger issue with Berhalter is definitely player selection at this point. He's started to show a bit more flexibility, but I do feel like as a whole he has this square peg/round hole mindset towards the national team that isn't the most effective approach.

As per the Gold Cup, I'm viewing the entire thing as one big experiment aimed towards our qualifying roster.

Appropriate time to share this video, which I think has been posted before:

Yeah, I agree with you regarding player selection and I think a few players are at the top of the list.

Why bring a C team when you can bring a B team?
Clark had appendectomy so isn't available

Pepi (18) and Cowell (17) won't factor in WCQ and are better served getting minutes with their teams than sitting on the bench in Gold Cup. Along with Rubin, none of these three will factor in WCQ as they're all behind Sargent, Pefok, Dike and Giocchini on the depth chart. We only play with 1 forward.

Mihailovic isn't a winger and won't be a factor in WCQ in the midfield

Baird and Mueller are the only ones that maybe deserving to be on the roster. Berhalter's already seen both so he probably doesn't rate them (not sure why he'd rate Lewis over the two).

What if I told you someone like Cowell doesn't have to get called into camp for the Gold Cup and sit on the bench? I do understand that's what would happen, but that's the criticism.

If this tournament means nothing, and it's really about finding two or three guys, then why not do something interesting like calling a talented teenager on a hot streak into csmp and finding out what he can do on the USMNT? This is no crazier or more ill advised than calling a non-starting MLS lifer into camp and giving him international minutes! I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

And btw, we don't have an established striker depth chart. Berhalter may think we do, but we really don't. Anyone who can score goals should be the starter. Ergo, broaden the search.

Scoring goals isnt the only metric to evaluate a striker, but I agree that there should only be a handful of players locked into starting roles. Probably 12 or so almost for sure on the WCQ roster for upcoming games.

Wow, interesting stat about USMNT GC Roster: We're #3 in CONCACAF behind Mexico (less than 1/2 the valuation of Mexico) and Jamaica.

Our squad is valued at less than what Pulisic and Reyna are valued at. 71mm versus 88mm

This squad is 71mm and our most valued squad is $219.5mm (You might be able to get it higher playing around with formation. )

Comparatively, Mexico's most valued squad is $138mm and Jamaica's is $76.6mm.

U23:
Mexico: $69mm
Jamaica: it's crashing
USA: $205mm $4.2mm
Canada: $115mm (60% Davies)
Costa Rica: $4.2mm

England and France are in the $500mm range.
Italy and Brazil in the $300mm range.
Germany at $175k.

I guess my point is we really are developing young players and the talent gap in Concacaf should continue to grow.

Mexico is at $168M for Gold Cup without Jiminez. Their most valued squad should be closer to $200M.

What's encouraging about that is 4 out of the top 10 U-23 for US are 20 and younger. Which means it's not just Pulisic, McKennie and Adams (all 22).

England has 3 out of top 10 U-23 20 and younger for comparison.

Yeah, I didn't dive in completely. I was comparing one formation.
Jimenez is $28mm.

Edit. I was talking about best 11 not all 23. But other formations are higher.

Our best 11 is 130M more than our Gold Cuo team.

There's just something different about the "USA" chant the players do before the game, that will always feel more powerful than a club chant to me.

I thought PatAg was one of the good ones, but I'm afraid he lost his sense of humor in his divorce...

All you dorks complaining about Berhalter's decisions need to ask yourselves:

Are we trying to win a game?

Are we trying to win a tournament?

Are we trying to win the next World Cup?

Gregg is playing the long game, not the immediate game in front of us...
jeffk
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Gregg would say yes to all three of your questions.

The first home WCQ game would be pretty awesome to attend. That crowd is going to be insane (or it better be). I doubt we ever get one in Texas though, too big a population of all the CONCACAF teams here, so it would be at best a neutral site. Best we ever get is friendlies, or Gold Cup games.

I really like Hoppe. He moves really well without the ball and makes intelligent passes. Shalke was a terrible team last year, but all of the goals he scored were a product of great off the ball movement. I'd like to see him play as a striker in Berhalter's system instead of a winger.

He played some great defense and had a couple of good tackles. Wouldn't mind seeing him as a LM or CM. Something that gives him the opportunity to showcase that skill set because I think we have better guys than him when it comes to finishing.

I think Shalke actually used him in the midfield as well. If he played striker it would be in a withdrawn role, so pretty much a CM.

I agree though, his energy is worth utilizing. I think the wing just puts him too far from the action.
