Yep. I hate watching us sink back and play so defensive. Against Australia, which is a very defensive team, it was likely the right call, but I always feel like that style is ripe for giving up a cheap goal....and then it's hard to flip the switch back on.

To your point re: a cheap goal, I'm of the opinion that Berhalter could have been called for the hand ball in the box. There is no legitimate reason for him to have his arms out shoving his man when the ball made contact. PK given up there could really have changed the momentum, and perhaps the result of the game.

In the old format, this could be an issue b/c it used to be only the top 2 advance from the 8 groups to the round of 16.

Now there are 12 groups and it is the top 2 (24 teams) + 8 more '3rd place' teams advance to the round of 32.

We already have 6 points. Even if AU and Turkey finish with 6 and the US somehow finished 3rd in our group there are already to many teams with ties/losses that mathematically cannot get more than 5 points, so the US will be part of the +8 teams to advance.

Look at Group A, B, C, G and H. Every team in those groups has a tie and +1 point for the tie (+3 for some teams who have played a 2nd game). So if one team in those groups wins out (get 7 points), the best the 2nd (will advance) and 3rd place team could do would be 5 points. So no matter what, the US will be ahead of any Group A B, C, G and H team in 3rd place. So 5 of the 12 groups already have the 3rd place team eliminated which leave the US in the +8 teams to advance.

No, not necessarily. Head to head is the first tiebreaker, so GD doesn't come into play unless there is a three way tie.

a US win or tie clinches 1st for US. If Turkey wins (and beat Paraguay), could end up 3 way tie and go to differential. Or just a Turkey 1st if Aussies dont beat Paraguay

This thread has completely confused me on how yellow cards work now and how advancement works. I'm just going to ignore it now and just hope we win.

Regarding ESPN, if their Soccer Power Index is anything like their college football power index then they probably have Haiti as very heavy favorites over Brazil and ranked as a top 5 team on the planet.

Just look at it this way - everyone will start the round of 32 with a clean slate on card count. However, if you still have punishment to serve from the group round, you have to serve it. Otherwise you're asking for a yellow card free-for-all in the 3rd group game because they'd have no negative impact looming for a yellow card (unless they get a 2nd in the same game).

If you accumulate 2 cards in the first 3 games you are suspended from the next match. That includes a second card in MD3 which suspends you from the first KO. The card count then resets to 0 for the KO through the QF. So if you had 1 early you are back to 0 at that point. They accumulate in the KO rounds through QF so if you get a second YC in the QF you miss the semi. In the semis they reset again so it's impossible to miss the final from accumulation.

Fair enough. I just got all of the Kubota parts delivered for their yearly maintenance so keeping up with 2.5 acres has been on the backburner the last couple of weeks.
