Mavs too ethical. Why is Middleton out there bombing 8 for 10 from 3-point range?

Let's see how it shakes out, but I predict the Mavs finish in 7th position heading into the lottery. Ahead of New Orleans, but behind Memphis. That is ~32% for a Top 4 pick and ~88% for a Top 8 pick.

The good news is the Mavs easiest game left is against the Bulls, which I think is the last game of the season. We don't play any other tankers. Memphis still has to play Utah once and the Bulls twice. So maybe they win 1 or 2 of those and can't catch us.

Allowing Middleton to run wild last night needs to be looked upon favorably by the basketball gods with what is going on around the league.

Andrew (oops) Nembhard had 23 points at halftime last night as Indy was locked in a close game with the Suns. He played 0 minutes in the second half.

Yeah the Mavs are still going to lose a ton of games lol. That was an ass whipping.

Was really great to see Coop get back to 50% from the field though. The only thing that matters for this team now and moving forward is doing everything they can do insure Coop grows and is surrounded by players that complement him. I say that because he's not a finished product. He's not a point guard or even a point forward. He's not a 3 point shooter. So they MUST find guys who compliment that.

Only guys without a 3 are B Will and Dwight lol. Not a great time for a Poulakidis breakout.

It's genuinely stunning how much better Coop is playing off a PG than not. He's a top 20 player in the league right now at 19 with a competent PG on the floor.

Also he's the 4 in a 5-out lineup where PJ looks competent at the 5. Very interesting.

Literally thought the same thing. "PJ looks great as a post presence playing small" lol

This game is over. Ngl one of the best games they've played, and Cleveland can't hit water if they fell outta boat.

For the game Cleveland is over 40% from 3. Mavs just doing a lot more of everything else.

It's a good reminder that things weren't really as bad as the losing streaks made it seem. The team has good players on it still and is getting 2 good players back next season (hopefully).

I suppose that's what makes it so painful to win, that you could add an awesome player to an already good team going in to next year.

But still a good reminder that we don't suck lol.

I never thought or think we're getting above No. 6 so I'm not losing much sleep over it.1

Utah plays Sac today, so it could have got interesting. But you're probably right that Utah would never allow themselves to win any games.

But now it gets dicey with Memphis for 7/8.

Yeah, guys like Middleton, Gafford, and PJ were starting Finals games in the last few years. Flagg is favored for ROY and projected future All-NBA. There are 14 games left, but I think the Mavs need to pull the plug on this in the next 6 or so games to guarantee a top 7 finish.

Also, I don't think Acuff is going to be on the board for the Mavs in the 7th/8th spot. I feel like he has to be jumping Flemings, Wagler, and Brown Jr. at this point.

I think after the top four (Peterson, Boozer, Dybantsa, and Wilson) it will be a whole lot of who fits with what team and scheme, more than it is "Acuff is the next best guy" or "Flemings is the next best guy." I just don't think there is much, if anything, that separates Flemings, Acuff, Wagler and Mikel Brown Jr.

Edit: barring injury concerns etc. of course

Definitely seems like you're right about him jumping Mikel Brown. Brown's back injury is starting to be worrisome. Hopefully he plays well in the tournament.

I'm looking at Atlanta and wondering if they think Acuff is the guy to get them over the hump, or do they think he's too much like Trae? I'm thinking NO will settle in at 8, and that pick goes to Atlanta. If they are at 8, 9, or 10, do they see this as their chance to get their guy and give up another pick to get Acuff. They have the size everywhere else.

It's just that the underlying defensive stuff for Acuff is legitimately awful, while it's decent for Wagler and very good for Flemings and Brown. Even Tyler Tanner, who is at least 2 inches shorter than Acuff has good defensive stuff you can look at that shows he's impacting the game on that end. Acuff will probably be the worst defender and rebounder, even adjusted for position, selected in the first round.

I think you're right that fit will be much more important in this year's draft. What if Utah has the chance to select Acuff? Do they see their backcourt of the future as Keyonte and Acuff? They have size everywhere else, but that is a pretty short backcourt that can't guard anyone. Wagler on that team would be crazy.

give me acuff, he's still slightly above average as a defender....but quite obviously the next bonafide face of the franchise type of scorer. Just hoping he falls to us.

I want Acuff if we can't jump into the top 4. This Mavs team needs, above all else, is someone who can dribble, pass, and shoot. That's Acuff. Arguably the best passer and best shooter. I truly believe his skillset will unlock Flagg and this Mavs team on offense in the best way possible. Conversely, his deficiencies at defense are easily mitigated with the same players that Nico built for Luka (rangy wing defenders and rim protectors). I think Acuff is about to go on a Kemba-like tourney run and I fear he won't make it to the Mavs pick (whether that's at 7 or 8).

If we're talking about just next year or perhaps the year after, I think the guy I would want would be Wagler, then Flemings/Mikel Brown Jr. because of their ability to also play the 2 and I think are real combo guards. If we're talking about what would be better three or four years from now I think Acuff is the best decision. Acuff can run the show and score better than anyone not named Peterson or Boozer, and he still might be a better point man than those two.

This just isn't true. The advanced performance metrics say he's bad on defense and all the things the projections look for like steals+blocks aren't good either. It's hard to compare him to other shorter guards like Donovan Mitchell because Mitchell actually had really good defensive qualities in college. Even Kyrie's defensive metrics were way better in college.

But it's like MC Swag said, what he does on offense is a fit for the Mavs' offensive needs, while defensively maybe there is some cover built in around him. I'll be terrified if the Mavs draft him, but it will probably be a ton of fun to watch lol.

I was taking that directly from team scout and podcast page comments.

For me, we had Luka...his defense clearly isn't worse than that, and he seems much more apt to accept defensive coaching. I'm just not going to turn my nose up at the next dame lillard type guard over a few defensive weaknesses. Give me Acuff and I'll be elated.

Whoever wrote that was just adding filler then, because there really aren't any metrics to say that it's true, even when comparing to other players on Arkansas.

Luka was at least 6'8" and could be in the way. He also got a lot of steals, which suggested good hands and a good reading of the game. Acuff averages less than 1 steal per 40 minutes.

It will be good to get these guy's real heights/weights/wingspans at the combine. Tyler Tanner is listed at 6' and Acuff did not look bigger than him (could have been Tanner's hair lol). I like Wagler, but supposedly he could test as one of the worst athletes in the entire NBA lol. The combine should actually be an interesting follow this year.

Philon has a lot of the same defensive concerns as Acuff, and that's why I'd take Burries over Philon at this point. I really like how Burries plays and I'd take him at 9 if that's where we end up. I'd take him over Ament now.

I see Ament as a guy who ends up falling as we get closer to the draft.
