I was not disappointed at all.
Some of the complaints I heard was the humor gets in the way at times. Never felt that in the least. Also heard the multiple endings issue. None of how it was done bothered me, but I might see how a non book reader would see it that way.
Film was beautiful to watch. I felt the sounds/music were even better. Best picture? I don't know. But it was damn good.

Sounds like the humor is very Martian-esque which is what I assumed it would be and frankly am not excited about. The Martian's humor was often way too cheesy and kept undermining the tension. I get that's the writers style but it didn't land for me and brought down a really solid Ridley Scott effort.

Traffic was a BEAR in SAT. Sat down at 517 for 5p start. Gosling was just stumbling around the ship, so not sure what we missed.

Amaze amaze amaze. Did the book justice. well done. I loved it. Kid friendly too. Gonna take my 7 and 9 year olds this weekend.
I thought this scene was adapted really well for movie audiences. It is much longer and more detailed in the book of course, and a lot of directors would have been tempted to show much more of it without the audience gaining anything. Very efficient screenplay throughout.Gnome Sayin said:Nom de Plume said:

Nothing really
You saw in the trailers him waking up. The computer asks him a simple question to gauge his alertness he crawls off and discovers he's in space.
That's probably where you picked up.

Weird, the humor was one of the biggest reasons I love The Martian.

Stress and nervous tension are now serious social problems in all parts of the Galaxy, you know. At least no petunias or whales were harmed, and no one's upper arm was mysteriously bruised.Dill-Ag13 said:Brian Earl Spilner said:Gig-Em2003 said:Gnome Sayin said:

The book is not tense, the humor cuts through it every chapter

Just got out of the 8:30am showing at the IMAX in Dallas. I have not seen another movie that's as close to the book as this one. Both are outstanding!
I had heard the complaints about the humor, but that's how the book is! Gosling was very good in this role as Grace.
"Asked" my wife to go and she absolutely loved it!
The ONLY negative was the a-hole on the other side of my wife who dropped his phone loudly, then later his giant wad of keys, then again when he decided to search for his keys with his flashlight with about 30 minutes still to go, in the tiny imax rows/seats to boot, then again with his flashlight to look for something in his lap. I didn't know until afterwards that apparently he was chomping on his straw the whole time too, to my wife's major irritation.

I was surprised it was rated pg 13. Wanted to take my kids as well but we urged on the side of caution. Definitely taking them to see. For them really…..not just because I want to see again. Yeah….for them.

I think maybe there was one curse word but it was muffled. I think there was a page in the book where some of the other scientists were very vocal about their relationship but that wasn't in the movie. I think this movie should have been PG.
Relativistic effects of time compression. Same effect as in Interstellar, but less extreme and due to speed not black hole gravity.M.C. Swag said:
Not really a spoiler since it's literally the first scene of the movie and trailer but JIC:
Not sure if this is addressed in the book but when the astronauts are in their coma pods, are they still aging normally? I know his beard and hair grew out but he looked relatively unaged for a guy who had been in space for 11 (?) years?
