Probably won't win best picture, but should bring in a few awards.

I love the fact they used real props rather than relying on CGI.

I was not disappointed at all.

Some of the complaints I heard was the humor gets in the way at times. Never felt that in the least. Also heard the multiple endings issue. None of how it was done bothered me, but I might see how a non book reader would see it that way.

Film was beautiful to watch. I felt the sounds/music were even better. Best picture? I don't know. But it was damn good.

Sounds like the humor is very Martian-esque which is what I assumed it would be and frankly am not excited about. The Martian's humor was often way too cheesy and kept undermining the tension. I get that's the writers style but it didn't land for me and brought down a really solid Ridley Scott effort.

Well it has the same screenwriter so yeah, if you didn't like it in the Martian, you won't like it in this movie.

Traffic was a BEAR in SAT. Sat down at 517 for 5p start. Gosling was just stumbling around the ship, so not sure what we missed.

Non-book reader.

Gosling cracks me up. I love his blend of humor, nerdiness, and humanity.

Family friendly, which is great.

Not best picture, but maybe actor/other noms.

Enjoyed it in VIP at Santikos Palladium.

Nothing really

You saw in the trailers him waking up. The computer asks him a simple question to gauge his alertness he crawls off and discovers he's in space.

That's probably where you picked up.

I was surprised it was rated pg 13. Wanted to take my kids as well but we urged on the side of caution. Definitely taking them to see. For them really…..not just because I want to see again. Yeah….for them.

I thought this scene was adapted really well for movie audiences. It is much longer and more detailed in the book of course, and a lot of directors would have been tempted to show much more of it without the audience gaining anything. Very efficient screenplay throughout.

Weird, the humor was one of the biggest reasons I love The Martian.

It was a fun book with a lot of science mixed in and a fun movie with a lot of science mixed in. There's no way everything in the book could be included in the movie, but they followed the plot very faithfully. No complaints.

Same here The Martian wouldn't be The Martian if it wasn't for the humor. Same with PHM. Read The Martian in one sitting and loved the movie too. Took me a little longer to read PHM, just because of my schedule, but loved it just as much. Seeing the movie today! Can't wait!!!

The book is not tense, the humor cuts through it every chapter

Stress and nervous tension are now serious social problems in all parts of the Galaxy, you know. At least no petunias or whales were harmed, and no one's upper arm was mysteriously bruised.

Just got out of the 8:30am showing at the IMAX in Dallas. I have not seen another movie that's as close to the book as this one. Both are outstanding!
I had heard the complaints about the humor, but that's how the book is! Gosling was very good in this role as Grace.
"Asked" my wife to go and she absolutely loved it!

The ONLY negative was the a-hole on the other side of my wife who dropped his phone loudly, then later his giant wad of keys, then again when he decided to search for his keys with his flashlight with about 30 minutes still to go, in the tiny imax rows/seats to boot, then again with his flashlight to look for something in his lap. I didn't know until afterwards that apparently he was chomping on his straw the whole time too, to my wife's major irritation.

We had dedicated fans in our theater who were dead quiet the entire movie. I don't think anyone got up in the middle of the show either. It was amazing.

Because of my misophonia, sitting in a movie theater is unbearable.

The constant popcorn chewing sends me into a near rage.

I guess that's why I rately go to crowded movies.

Had one person that must have gotten some popcorn stuck in their gullet, because they couldn't stop coughing the entire second half of the movie

Appreciate you guys putting this out there. Was coming in here to see about how kid friendly this was from people on here. From what I've seen mentioned other places is that some of the more adult references from the book seem to be dialed back for the movie.

I think maybe there was one curse word but it was muffled. I think there was a page in the book where some of the other scientists were very vocal about their relationship but that wasn't in the movie. I think this movie should have been PG.

That's exactly what I was thinking about when questioning whether or not to try and bring the kids.

Not really a spoiler since it's literally the first scene of the movie and trailer but JIC:

Not sure if this is addressed in the book but when the astronauts are in their coma pods, are they still aging normally? I know his beard and hair grew out but he looked relatively unaged for a guy who had been in space for 11 (?) years?

$12 million on Thursday night. The most by a non-franchise, non-sequel since It in 2017.
Looking forward to seeing it Sunday

It is addressed in the book, but its not really 11 years because of relativity. I think its like 4 years to those in the ship or something while being 11 years on earth.

Relativistic effects of time compression. Same effect as in Interstellar, but less extreme and due to speed not black hole gravity.

I saw it at an IMAX theater expecting the best experience. The opening even claimed "made for IMAX" or "used IMAX cameras" or somesuch, but the movie itself was standard movie dimensions and the bottom and top of the screen were empty. Is that expected? The seats at the Cinemark down the street fully recline while these were standard seats. Seems like that's the much better value.

Actually, Grok said "over 70%" of the movie uses the full screen. I guess I didn't notice the switches…

If you saw it at an IMAX, do you think it was worth it?

Easiest 5 star rating I've given on Letterbox in a while. Great movie and visually stunning at times. Just some remarkable shots.
