Just sat down for what I hope is a movie worthy of a great book.

Saw it today on the Samsung Onyx screen at Star Cinema Grill in Richmond/Katy. The was a perfect movie for that screen. The visuals from Rocky's POV were impeccable.

Taking the daughter today at 3 to SCG in Richmond to watch on the Onyx screen. The only previous movie I saw on that screen was Oppenheimer. I have read the book, so I'm going in knowing what to expect. My daughter is not familiar with the story, but does seem to have a thing for Gosling.

So jealous you are getting to experience this movie for the first time right now. I saw it yesterday. And I understand where your daughter is coming from. I'm a 48 year old straight male…been married 26 years and I have a thing for Ryan Gosling. My thing is…I would love to have beers with that dude.

Ha. I bet that was wild too. Could never get into the GOT books

Same. Gosling seems impossible to dislike.

It's also kinda crazy how Gosling has quietly put together one of the best career filmographies of any current actor not named Leo DiCaprio.

I'd put his up against anyone's under 50 right now.

This and the Silo thread may be the most contentious threads ever between readers and watchers. I edited my semi spoiler and will move to the other thread.

Apparently you were never on the Game of Thrones or the Last of Us threads.

I saw it at an IMAX theater expecting the best experience. The opening even claimed "made for IMAX" or "used IMAX cameras" or somesuch, but the movie itself was standard movie dimensions and the bottom and top of the screen were empty. Is that expected? The seats at the Cinemark down the street fully recline while these were standard seats. Seems like that's the much better value.

Actually, Grok said "over 70%" of the movie uses the full screen. I guess I didn't notice the switches…

If you saw it at an IMAX, do you think it was worth it?

Just got out. This was my immediate sentiment regarding the IMAX experience for this movie. There were two scenes by my count that were worth it and those scenes were relatively short, at least the visual aspects, that I'd say served an IMAX screening well. Other than that, I probably would've watched it on a standard screen if I were to rewatch it.

Great movie though. Easy-to-like characters with Gosling being charming AF, the stakes were easy to understand, the score and soundtrack were all great. Directing was good, especially balancing dramatic elements and comedic elements (a lot of great jump cuts to hammer home the jokes). Really enjoyed it.

Just don't think the $30 for IMAX was worth it.

I thought this was a very faithful adaptation and they did a great job bringing the book to life. I was concerned that it would be difficult to translate the book to the screen, but the movie is great

The Big Picture podcast had Lord & Miller on the most recent episode to discuss the making of the film and it's pretty impressive what they've done. Evidently they didn't use a single green screen, and Rocky was operated by a team of 5 puppeteers.

Also, random thing we noticed was that there was a scene with Gosling at the conference table with the project head/team talking about important stuff and there was minor thing with his glasses in terms of continuity. Zero story impact but 100% noticeable. Just a random thing to see if anyone else noticed it, or if anyone who plans to watch will also notice it.

Also, random question. How much does it cost to license a Beatles song for a movie? Just out of curiosity.

That was fantastic. Proof positive that it is possible to film a movie right out of a book without wholesale changes.

Absolutely…..saw it in IMAX 70MM.

I saw it in lie-MAX and I enjoyed the bigger screen format and noticed the aspect ratio switching a couple times. I thought it was worth the surcharge but I'm jealous of those that saw it in 70mm.

Saw it at marqe Houston imax today, i didn't notice any ratio switching nor any clarity issues. I'd say worth the premium but $30 a ticket is pretty steep

I think it just showed how short his attention span for serious people was when he had to listen to other people talk about it versus how singularly focused he was when he was doing things by himself.

I think that's what made the interaction between him and Carl and him and Rocky so special. He found people/rocks that still were willing to have a good time.

Can you guys please use the spoiler thread for plot discussion, questions, etc. Per usual, this thread should ONLY be for vague/general reactions…

https://texags.com/forums/13/topics/3599532

Too late really. You'd have to be a dope not to have a pretty good idea of the plot and main characters from the previous 13 pages.

No way I was going to this Thread until after I saw the movie. I can't understand why anybody would?

Saw it yesterday morning - we always go to the morning shows for two reasons: The big theater is almost empty and I don't fall asleep in those awesome lounge chairs while drinking my Starbucks.

That being said, what a great ride! I read the book but loved the movie. Wifey didn't read the book but loved the movie.

my only vague gripe was I thought the sound editing coukd have been clearer - then again I'm used to closed captioning at home.

This is how we've done it for damn near 20 years, for every single blockbuster/big movie.

Once the movie is released, the "official" thread becomes the "general reaction" thread, and then the newly-created spoiler thread is where spoiler discussions are held. It's not that complicated, especially when the spoiler thread has been linked to numerous times.

People here always ***** and moan whenever critic reviews are posted or Rotten Tomatoes scores are referenced, saying they only care what the general audience thinks. And now, when those of us who can't see the movie until Saturday/Sunday/next week want to read general audience reactions here, y'all are essentially like, "**** you. You snooze you loose."

That's bull*****

That's what these threads have ALWAYS been for.

Also, I started this thread, so don't tell me what it is/isn't or that I'm a "dope" for reading it. **** off with that.

If you notice, for 20 years posters continue to give stuff away. I personally did not give away anything at all. Other posters gave away tons, yet you constantly complain - they do it every time, that's why I said why bother at all. Don't shoot the messenger.

And, next time there's a Blockbuster out, they will do it again.

Now you're just making **** up. 99% of the time people respect the "rules," re: spoiler threads vs "official" threads. And I rarely have to say anything because it's hardly ever an issue. By and large most people aren't *******s, and the spoiler threads often end up seeing way more traffic than the original threads. But for whatever reason a handful of people don't give a **** in this particular instance, to the point where they're literally just posting spoiler images now. Yet I'm the bad guy for simply looking out for those who haven't seen it yet.
