Imax for this movie sounds legit. I'm not that crazy about it being a movie because there's so much going on inside the guy's head, but I guess it worked for the Martian.

Also hilarious when I hover the thread and my phone says there are negative four new posts.

In case you didn't know, same writer as the Martian.
That was why I said that.

I really enjoyed the book. I only have one small critique that could be considered a spoiler:

I felt like there was one problem too many. By the time I got toward the end of the book and the main crisis had been resolved, the protagonist still has to go through one more big science problem solving feat to locate another ship. At that point I thought "Here we go again. Can we just wrap this up?" Minor critique, but it just felt a bit too long.

Loved the trailer right up to the very end..........March 2026

I've been waiting for this one too long already.

I wonder if they will keep the sequencing similar to the boonw with him not remembering things when he wakes up. I was thinking today how they would cram this into a 2 hour movie and the easy answer is just to tell it as a linear story and cut out the third of the book of him trying to remember everything. Maybe I missed an obvious clue on the trailer on that

I hope they don't get rid of it entirely. Could be condensed some without big loss.

I just rewatched the trailer and I think they did a good job disguising it.

I think they will.

I will be very disappointed if it's a linear story.

I actually think that's the reason a lot of us that read the book think they showed too much in the trailer. We spent almost a third of the book learning what the hell was going on with the protagonist. Literally everything was a surprise to him and the reader as the story progressed.

The audiobook is fantastic. Ray Porter's narration is excellent, but what really makes the audiobook special is the additional sound effects for Rocky. If you read the print version and plan to re-read before the movie, pick up the audiobook.

The audiobook is absolutely fantastic, and Ray Porter is in my top 5 narrators. I had already read the print version and decided to listen to the audiobook after listening to the Bobiverse books by Ray Porter.

Despite knowing what was going to happen, I found myself sitting in my car listening for almost an hour after I got home because I was absolutely hooked and lost track of time.

I just rewatched the trailer and I think they did a good job disguising it.

I think they will.

Agreed.

I haven't read the book and even to me it's pretty obvious this story won't be told linearly.

The trailer literally begins with him in space, not remembering how he got there, and then it very intentionally uses the repeated line of "I'm not an astronaut" to jump back in time. That kind of synchronicity/intentionality isn't a coincidence, and I'd be willing to bet just about anything the movie starts out roughly the same.

Not to mention, the rest of the trailer is constantly cutting back and forth between teacher Gosling and astronaut Gosling. There looks to be a karaoke scene, especially, that, if the movie were told linearly, I just can't see being an act one kind of scene. Something like that is 100% a flashback.

It's definitely obvious there will be some sort of flashbacks, but my main question is just how much of the "I don't remember who I am" are we going to get? The trailer seems to show him waking up and already knowing. A big part of the book is him just trying to figure out who he is and why he's there in the first place.

Hard to say from the trailer. I mean it shows the part of him trying to remember his name, who knows how much leads to that.

It's not a book spoiler to say the book starts the same way. It is actually a huge part of the first act, obviously. What little the trailer shows us so far, seems to line up with how the book is largely structured.

The very synopsis on the back of the book indicates pretty much how it goes.

Quote:

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance missionand if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.

Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.
The bolded is the starting point. From the trailer and from how important it is to the story, it would be cinema suicide to go linear IMO.

Annnnnnd.....inspired to read the book again.

Call me a skeptic, but if any book cried for a TV mini-series rather than a movie, this one was it.

There are so many characters not touched in the book that can be expanded upon.

I'm not a skeptic, but I do agree that a limited series would have been better. That might be because I would rather have 10 hours instead of 2.5 hours of it to watch, though. The pacing would have been easier, too.

They should have had a teaser trailer that replicated the first act. Only shows him in space, confused, and trying to learn what he's doing there. Then drop this trailer at the end of summer/early fall.

Honestly, though, after watching 20 times I think they did a good job of giving away as little as possible to grab the audience. Still plenty of surprises left.

I guess skeptic is a bad word. I just don't think a movie will capture the story accurately. It might be a good movie.

Content wise, a Chernobyl style miniseries would have been perfect IMO.

But to be the moneymaker it CAN be, theatrical release is a given.

Just restarted the book, I got so excited.

Just reread it and yeah, you're probably right. It had been a minute since I read it last and kinda forgot how short it was actually.

Still great though. Had forgotten an important detail and super curious how they are going to portray it exactly.

The biggest hurdle for me was Ray Porter reading it, let me explain...I am a big fan of his narration style.

I am a huge fan of the Terminal List series by Jack Carr. When he started voicing the Grace character, all I could picture or hear was James Reece.

The sound effects for Rocky were excellent. Curious as to how them communicating will be handled in the movie.

I never had that sense, to me it just seemed like a natural transition to another issue. The explanation of scientific aspects i.e. physics / microbiology and challenges of space travel throughout the book had me hooked.

Put me down as another who LOVED the book. I think it helped that I didn't even read a synopsis before I started the audiobook so I didn't even know what it was generally about, let alone the different twists throughout.

When I told my wife the trailer for this came out, I started describing the book and she goes "is that one you couldn't stop talking about for like 2 months?" Damn right.

Anyways, super excited for this!

Not going to lie, I'm glad they showed Rocky in the trailer. As I was reading the book I found the introduction to the alien a bit off. I guess I didn't see it coming, and I didn't love that part of the book. The flashbacks, him piecing together his memories all was fine. Just didn't love the alien.

It's a book/movie where a guy goes into deep space to another star and you didn't think he would meet an alien?
Fair point but maybe I'm dummy but it did not cross my mind. I guess I was thinking it would be more of a Martian scenario than meeting other life. But bring on the lava hot stinky alien.
