So much misinformation in this thread. Good Lord. The FCC did not force ABC to fire Kimmel. There's no evidence of that! ABC MADE A BUSINESS DECISION.

It's pretty clear cut that there is no government involvement in silencing speech here. Kimmel is free to continue being a disgusting human being, just not on ABC's network. He's not going to prison or being executed for what he said.

No evidence except for multiple examples of the FCC chair explicitly and implicitly saying he influenced them. And the president saying that companies should lose their licenses.

You don't seem to understand the difference between the FCC and Trump stating their opinions versus actually taking action.

Don't pretend you need a smoking gun because you wouldn't believe it either.

I haven't said anything to that effect, but it is clear many on this thread don't need a smoking gun to spread lies that this is government censorship of free speech. Look in a mirror.

Not sure this applies as I've done very little research.

We have been looking in a mirror. We see ourselves getting banned, censored, debanked, deplatformed, called names (REPEATEDLY), doxxed, lied to and lied about all the time.

And since when did the government censor anything here? Talk about another lie/misinformation. If ABC thought they were in the right and had nothing to fear from the FCC they could have fought it in court. But no - instead ABC took action by themselves and the government didn't censor anything.

So what, I'm not getting into the politics of it. Both sides abuse their power.

I just like highlighting that Kimmel is a hack and it should be posted over and over.

"Both sides" don't use the FCC to litigate political speech they disagree with. One side does that.

You are exactly right. The left simply has to give their CEO a call and resolve the problem using the old leftist network for the most part. For more difficult cases they use other methods. Its all worked out well for them so far, so why change?

This whole argument about the right using just the threat of their license enforcement has you liberals in such an uproar you are totally blind to the RAGE people feel against the left for years of censorship and lies across the board. People are TIRED of it - tired to not care about the consequences because the consequences of doing NOTHING is far worse for us that are not on the left.

As someone who is more centrist than most conservatives its a painful thing to watch, but we're really helpless on this path the left has sent us down. And you're an idiot if you think conservatives will just keep sitting back and watch it happen - that's literal suicide at this point.

So you're saying the left uses social pressure therefore the right assumes it should use government coercion?

the Federally employed left literally had backdoor access and people working at X and Facebook moderating content.

If your boss says, "don't do this or you might be fired," or a cop says,"If you do this we're going to have to investigate you," is that just harmlessly stating an opinion with nothing behind it?

No? Then he wasn't talking about you.

The difference is, the FCC didn't publicly threaten anyone to make ether of those firings.

I don't know how many more times we have to say this, but...

NO. ONE. HERE. IS. MAD. THAT. KIMMEL. GOT. SUSPENDED. BY. DISNEY.

For the umpteenth time, that's not the issue.

It's that the FCC and Trump are publicly threatening to silence speech they don't like, and that the affiliates likely capitulated to them due to the fact they need the FCC to approve an unprecedented merger.

This isn't rocket science.

I seriously worry about some of y'all's basic reading comprehension skills sometimes...

"If you want to defend the events leading to Kimmel's suspension, you can obviously do so."

... which clearly means that ABC's actions in firing Kimmel can be justified, implying that Kimmel was in the wrong, etc, etc.

The point he's making is that this whole situation might have unfolded differently if Carr didn't first make public threats.

I swear, it will never not be insane to me how some of you are bending over backwards to excuse government threats/censorship just because you hate a comedian.

Jimmy Kimmel can suck AND the FCC/Trump can be in the wrong here.

Both things can be true at once!

It's okay to admit that. No one's going to come after your F16 bonafides if you do.

Just a reminder that Rosanne compared a black woman to "Planet of the Apes," causing multiple producers to leave and the network on their own to decide to cancel the show. And it wasn't like this was a one-off bad tweet. She had been posting insane **** for awhile before that.

The poster I was responding to didn't seem to have a problem with it.

But that is not hypocrisy. All things that people say are not the same.

What Kimmel said might have offended you or others or you might just not liked the joke (and as I've mentioned I still don't think he lied as others appear to believe), but he did not make a comment that would be immediately understood as wildly offensive by a majority of people.

I think there's a more valid point on the Carano situation. But again, that's the not the point of contention.

I don't think any of us here have an issue with ABC cancelling the show if it was an independent decision. It's the veiled threats of FCC intervention/interference that are the issue, as well as the fact that the primary ABC partners that took issue with this have upcoming deals that need FCC approval.

So *some* government censorship is okay as long it's not *full* government censorship. Got it. You're essentially arguing that it's okay for the government to threaten free speech in certain instances, as long as they're not threatening all instances.

Please tell me you understand how stupid this sounds.

There was no government censorship. How thick is your skull?

I'll say this and then I'm done here. The FCC didn't fire Kimmel. They didn't censor Kimmel. ABC wasn't coerced by the FCC. ABC chose to cancel his show after the local affiliate chains told them they were choosing to stop broadcasting his vitriol based on the public's response to Kimmel's own free speech from his program.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean you can say anything you want without consequence. Kimmel can still go say whatever he wants, just not on that particular platform. He 100% brought it on himself.

Tell me you haven't read the full thread without telling me you haven't read the full thread.

Because we've been over this a thousand times already.

The FCC/Carr absolutely threatened the affiliates. That objectively happened, proof of which has been posted here ad nauseam.

To say that they weren't coerced by that threat is a blind hope at best, especially considering THEY NEED THE FCC'S APPROVAL TO PERFORM AN UNPRECEDENTED MERGER.

Of course the FCC didn't fire Kimmel, and of course free speech isn't free of employer consequences. Again, we've all said as much over and over and over in this thread.

But you are being willfully ignorant to the chain of events that happened in this particular instance.

Sinclair needed nothing. Quit repeating this lie
