dual-pronged investigative and regulatory pincer movement is moving to close on the nonprofits and "dark money" networks that have long anchored the American left's political and cultural infrastructure.
From Congress to the Justice Department and the IRS, the Trump administration and allied lawmakers are examining the anonymity and tax-exempt status enjoyed by some of the most influential progressive organizations in the country.
The latest development came Thursday when the House Oversight Committee issued a subpoena to the Sixteen Thirty Fund, the massive non-profit hub managed by Arabella Advisors. The subpoena demands internal communications and financial records regarding a social media influencer operation known as the Chorus program.
The core of the House inquiry involves the Chorus program's potential role in circumventing federal campaign finance laws. Specifically, the investigation focuses on the payment of social media influencers to disseminate political messaging without the disclosures mandated by campaign finance law.

Democrats used a procedural tool called the Congressional Review Act to force more than a dozen resolutions targeting Trump's rollback of the CFPB, covering everything from overdraft fees and medical debt to military lending protections. The real goal wasn't legislation it was to put vulnerable Republican senators on the record ahead of the 2026 midterms and use the votes in campaign ads.
The votes targeted changes made at the CFPB since Trump returned to office and put Budget Director Russell Vought in charge. Since February 2025, Vought has rolled back 67 policies and scaled back the bureau's operations, part of a broader effort to rein in an agency the administration says spent years operating without meaningful limits.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), who pushed for the CFPB's creation while teaching at Harvard Law School and has been its loudest defender in Congress ever since, led the Democratic charge on the Senate floor.Quote:
"The Trump Administration is hell-bent on destroying the agency," Warren said, adding that the administration had "abandoned consumers and is making life more expensive for them."
She left out an inconvenient number. Democrats like to cite the CFPB's own figure of $19.7 billion returned to consumers through enforcement actions and settlements since the bureau's founding. According to a February estimate from the White House Council of Economic Advisers, the CFPB has cost consumers and lenders between $237 billion and $369 billion since its creation, largely by driving up borrowing costs through aggressive regulation. For every dollar the bureau clawed back in settlements, it may have taken ten from ordinary Americans in higher loan rates and fees.

In September 2022, Rachel Kleinfeld, a Carnegie Endowment senior fellow, published "Five Strategies to Support U.S. Democracy"through the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
What Kleinfeld proposed were five strategies drawn from international democracy-support research: the kind of work Carnegie, the National Endowment for Democracy, and Freedom House had been doing in Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East for decades. The paper read like a field manual for
treating the United States as a backsliding democracy in need of outside intervention… except the interveners were domestic NGOs, and the target population was the American right.
Here's what makes the paper more than scholarship. At the time of publication, Kleinfeld held governance positions at organizations executing four of the five strategies she prescribed. This was not hidden it was read aloud as her introductionat the 2023 Bridging Movement Alignment Council gathering:
"Rachel Kleinfeld is a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment's democracy conflict and governance program... She is also a trustee of the National Endowment for Democracy, Freedom House, States United for Democracy, and on the Advisory Board to Protect Democracy, and a senior adviser to the Democracy Funders Network and a member of the National Task Force on Election Crises."
She wrote the instruction manual, then handed it to the people who write the checks. The Democracy Funders Network where she serves as Senior Advisor is the switchboard for democracy philanthropy.
It describes itself as a "cross-ideological learning and action community for donors" concerned about American democracy. Its executive director describes DFN's role as having "helped incubate critical field-wide infrastructure." DFN also built the U.S. Democracy Hub. DFN hosted Kleinfeld's paper on its resources pageas a sector-wide strategic blueprint the month it was published. Within twelve months, IMIP adopted Strategy #4 as its founding mission.

The affidavit states Clemson University officials told investigators they could not verify that Rush attended the school. An associate registrar at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute similarly stated that records did not show Rush attended the institution, according to the filing.
The FBI also alleged Rush falsely represented that he remained in the Navy Reserve after his discharge in 2015. According to the affidavit, government records showed Rush claimed 744 hours of military leave after his discharge, totaling about $77,000 in compensation.
Investigators further alleged Rush requested large quantities of foreign currency and tens of millions of dollars in gold bars from his employer between November 2025 and March 2026 for purported work-related expenses. According to the affidavit, investigators later determined that some of the currency and gold could not be accounted for.
The FBI executed a search warrant at Rush's home on Monday according to the affidavit. Agents seized about 303 gold bars weighing approximately 1 kilogram each, with an estimated value exceeding $40 million based on current gold prices, the filing states. Agents also seized about $2 million in cash and about 35 luxury watches, many of them Rolex watches, according to the affidavit.
The affidavit said that there was probable cause to believe Rush fraudulently obtained an inflated salary and military leave benefits from about 2009 through May 2026.
Quote:
David Rush has been charged with theft of public money in a criminal complaint filed in the Eastern District of Virginia.
Federal investigators allege that Rush requested large sums of money and foreign currency for what he described as "work-related expenses", including tens of millions of dollars in gold bars, before allegedly diverting some of the assets for personal use.

2015 August, the official publishing house of the PLA AMMS published a book titled The Unnatural Origin of SARS and New Species of Artificial Viruses as Genetic Weapons. The book's primary thesis is that SARS-CoV-1 did not emerge naturally through a process of zoonotic spillover, but rather was a genetic weapon, that is, a chimeric virus artificially engineered to infect humans.
The book described experimental techniques that a virologist could use to create chimeric viruses like SARS-CoV-1:
...
2015-Barics lab began work with Gilead on Remdesivir
...
2016-World Health Assembly , the W.H.O. set up the R&D Blueprint and announced a priority list of pathogens that most threaten global health and for which no vaccines or drugs were in the pipeline. SARS made the list, as did MERS, Nipah, Ebola and other rare but serious diseases caused by epidemic viruses.
2016: The National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity states that "very few government-funded gain-of-function experiments [pose] a significant threat to public health."
2016-Daszak, a regular advisor to WHO on pathogen prioritization for R&D, Carroll and Joana Mazet former global director for USAID's PREDICT all joined together in 2016 to form the Global Virome Project; a "10-year collaborative scientific initiative to discover unknown zoonotic viral threats and stop future pandemics".
Mazet was also co-director of UC Davis' One Health program, which recruited Dr. Wacharapluesadee and her team in Thailand to conduct a multi-year research project on bats.
They are joined by Edward Rubin of Metabiota Inc, a recipient of Callahan's PROPHECY funds at DARPA and, notably, an $18.4 million DTRA contract award for scientific research and consulting work in Ukraine and the Lugar Center in the Republic of Georgia.
Metabiota was accused by the Viral Hemorrhagic Fever Consortium in 2014 of violating their contract and engaging in dangerous blood culturing work at a lab in Africa, as well as misdiagnosing patients.
