I have half a mind to try to start a distribution company that only distributes small brewer's beer. IOW, no BMC beers. I feel that such a venture would be an uphill battle the entire way.
you could have made it work if you did it a couple years ago, but now you'd have to compete with the company who already did it, Duff distributors.
http://www.duffbeerusa.com/

quote:
A micro brewery can produce and self distribute beer but cannot be a retailer. I believe once you are over a certain size you can not self distribute.
I really don't think this is how the law works.. not 100% sure, but pretty sure the only way to get beer on a shelf is to go through a distributor, in texas.
quote:

The only way in Texas to produce and retail your own beer is if you are a Brew Pub, in which case you can not sell your beer anywhere besides at the brewery.
again, this is false. a 'brew pub' sells their beer in glasses to customers in a bar/restaurant, but they can't give to distrib. to put on shelves, and customer can't take a 6pack home. BJ's and 2-row in houston was like this. BJ's is unique, since they have 20 something locations in tx, they would have to install brewing equipment at every location (since whatever is brewed at each location could only be served in a glass), since this isn't cost effective, saint arnolds brews it all for them. it goes through distributor, but instead of available to public, bj's gets it all.

A 'brewery' can give to distrib to put on shelves, but cannot sell beer to a customer, either in a glass or a bottle. (the loophole is, buy the glass, we'll fill it up)
saint annolds or southern star is like this

quote:
If you are a distillery you do have to have a distributor, you can not do it yourself. This is the case with Ranger Creek Brewery and Distillery which should have beer on the market in two weeks. They are self distributing their beer but have to have someone else distribute their liquor.
a distillery doesn't make beer they make liquor, and those laws differ than beer laws. again, I really don't think a brewery (or a brewpub) can take their beer to a liquor store and ask the owner to sell it. they MUST go through distrib.

From BrewersAssociation.org
"Alcoholic Beverage Code Title 3, Ch. 12
Brewpubs are not allowed to distribute (self or otherwise) in Texas. Shipping breweries can self-distribute if they manufacture less than 75,000 bbls of beer per year."

Also, every brewpub I know of sells thier beer in Growlers that can be taken home and I know of at least one that bottles and sells special editions of thier beers. You do have to buy it from them at thier location as they can not distribute it.

Yes, I know a distillery operates under a seperate liscence, I only mentioned it because I know that Ranger Creek in San Antonio is producing both beer and liquor. They are self distibuting thier beer but must use a distributer for thier liquor.

You are correct about BJs, although in Texas they are not technically a Brewpub because they do not make thier own beer on site. They are simply a retailer that custom orders beer from a brewery. In Texas they would not be allowed to be both a retailer and a brewery.

IsleAg,

How about opening tiny retail stores next to the breweries that are only open when the brewery is doing tours and sell thier beer? You could probably work it out where they self distribute to you on an as needed basis and you wouldn't need to store much.

that law makes no sense, as saint arnold is still under 75K barrels a year
http://blogs.chron.com/beertx/2010/10/new_fermenting_tanks_to_boost.html

and they cannot self distribute..
find another source, I still don't think that is correct, or we're reading it wrong, or there's more to it than that that isn't so cut and dry.

and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but 2-row (when it was open), they couldn't sell in growlers can they?
are you saying you've been to tx brewpub that you could buy and take home beer in a growler? I've never heard of such a thing in TX.

You can definitely buy growlers from brewpubs here in Texas. You can even have them fill your corny kegs if you are a homebrewer.

As for self distributing that is correct, you are allowed to self distribute in Texas under 75,000 barrels. I guess St. Arnolds decided it wasn't worth doing it. I know that the guys starting New Republic brewing here in Texas are planning on self-distributing.

well i'll be, this state isn't as hard on beer people after all. i've had it in my head this whole time that is quite possibly the worst state to start a brewery or brewpub.

hah i said hard on.

I know Fredricksburg and Triple Js in Lubbock both fill growlers. Uncle Billy's will too.

And the TABC has told us that any distribution must go through a distribution company. I may have to hit them back with the 75k number and see what their responce is.

Made a beer run last night & picked up the following:
Abita Turbodog
Kona Pipeline Porter (based on suggestions here)
Weihenstephaner Korbinian (A dopplebock)
Real Ale Sisyphus (Barlywine)

I tried a couple last night. The Kona was VERY tasty, if you like a good porter try it! The Abita is an English Brown Ale & I haven't had the style in a long time... thumbs up to it as well!

I decided to save the Real Ale & Korbinian until the weekend. Maybe.

Was in Chicago last weekend and tried a few new beers.

Best of the bunch was the Green Line Pale Ale from Goose Island Brewery there in Chicago.

if you ever happen upon a bar serving cask conditioned Real Ale Sisyphus (Barlywine), you are in for a real treat. that is one of my favorites.

I tried the SN Celebration the other day and thought it was just ok, liked their Torpedo much better. I thought it was kind of strange it didn't taste better than their year round offering given the description. Then, I saw this article in the Statesman yesterday, interesting read. Never had Celebration before so I can't personally compare.

How about some Belgian beers? They have a ton of different styles.

Duvel is a Belgian pale ale type that is really, really good... most places will have it.

New Belgium in Colorado makes a great beer called Abbey that is a Dubbel variety, dark & malty.

If you can find it, a beer called La Fin du Mond is a Belgian trippel style that is very different tasting from other styles IMO. You'll probably only find it in singles.

Good luck!

I've been drinking Celebration for at least 12 years..and I like this year's version.

I remember really not liking SN's Celebration last year whenever I tried it. I've also had a lot of beer since then, so I'm willing to try it again, but I have a bad taste in my mouth (tehe) from last year.

Another yum porter is Breckenridge Vanilla, if you ladies have yet to try it. Also pretty popular.

Anybody brew this weekend?

I did two firsts:
first recipe that I made up myself, and my first attempt at a black IPA.

everything went great, can't wait to try it. it's bubbling away.

I'm going to save this yeast cake. Then on 12/5 I'm going to brew a BJ's jeremiah red clone, and pitch it onto the saved yeast cake. will be my first attempt at that as well. both are wlp001, so should work out fine.

Had RealAle's Coffee Porter last night on tap & am happy to report it is very, very good. Similar taste as the Kona Pipeline, but one notch down on the coffee flavoring.

Beer should have it's own board. It is after all responsible for the start of civilization!

Widmer Brrr is on the shelves at Specs in Houston.

If you like winter warmers, but want something that is more hoppy than sweet, you will love this stuff.

By way of agriculture! So you could say that beer is responsible for A&M? Maybe?

Maybe its too ordinary for you brew-nerds, or maybe this isn't news to 'y'all', but
I just downed a whole sixer of St. Arnold's Christmas Ale while watching the game, and it was delicious. It was hearty, mildly hopped, with a full and mildly sweet flavor that beats every holiday beer I've had this year. (And not just because no citrus/cardamom/pecan/peach/nutmeg/cinnamon... were added.) The website blurb says they used a 5-variety blend of malted barley, and 2 northwest hops. I say its well balanced, not over-emphasizing amber or roasted malts or sweetness, and just hoppy enough. I found it very pleasing. It pairs well with BEATING TU!!!

Oh, and while channel-surfing during gameday commercials, I 'discovered' a beer reality-show on Discovery. "Brew Masters", which premiered Sunday, is hosted by Sam Calagione, founder of Dogfish Head Brewery, and produced by the same company that created “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations".

Had the Rogue John John Hazelnut Brown aged in spiced rum barrels today. Fantastic sweet brown beer with just a hint of the spiced rum flavor at the end.
