A snippet from this article states " In addition, 110 county jobs that had remained unfilled for over six months will be officially eliminated, contributing another $36 million in savings." My quick math shows that each of these jobs averaged $327k - what the hell kind of jobs were left unfilled or is this some type of accounting tomfoolery?

Not just pay, but health benefits, pension fund, life insurance for your spouse or love one. Harris County employees have their pension match 225% of every dollar that is put in. So if you put in 1 dollar into your pension fund, Harris County matches it with $2.25. Harris County takes out 6% pretax of your biweekly pay.

Dora drags children into the court as a political stunt, alienates the rest of the commissioners, doesn't get her way, then skips the final deliberations and vote to go see a concert. What a pathetic dereliction of her elected office. She truly is not mentally fit to be elected to anything.

She knew if she ran she was going to get beat in the primary. She burned too many bridges, but more importantly, she's an idiot. Good riddance.

Quote:

"The first time I was elected, I said immediately, 'I don't want to do this for 30 years. I don't want to have more than two terms,'" she said.
When asked about rumors that she was eyeing Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia's seat in District 29, Hidalgo denied the speculation and expressed support for Garcia. Hidalgo said she will do everything she can to back Garcia's candidacy and other Democrats around the state.
Hidalgo said she is unsure of what will come next in her career, but she confirmed she will not run for office in this election cycle. She added that she plans to stay in public safety and left the door open to return for a new political position in the future.
"If the voters will have me, I'd like to be in elected office again. I think that with everything I've been through, I have learned so much about how to be an elected official and make it sustainable," she said.

two gems right there. of course she spins this to make it seem like it was her plan all along.

i think she bit the hand that fed her. I think she thought she'd move into some role in the Harris admin and forgot who put her in the job. They got fed up and have backed off supporting her.

But this probable means parker will get the job. Which still isn't good for Harris County.

Parker is at least somewhat likely to be able to demonstrate competence, even if I almost certainly wouldn't support the agenda she'd be bringing with her.

Pretty sure she's known she couldn't win the race and wasn't planning on running again for a while, and just held out from saying it to try and maintain some semblence of relevance and not be perceived as a lame duck prior to the budget vote.

Even with that, she couldn't keep her inner nutjob under control.

Even with retirement and benefits its not 300k ea. Those would all have to be top tier positions and those are always filled. That math ain't mathing.

It might be, but still a very high paying job (like $100k +).

I worked at a public institution and when looking at ways to improve O&M staff efficiency, first thing we had to look at was the REAL cost of those employees per hour. This was 20 years ago, but the staff maintenance guy making $25/hr was actually costing the institution ~$60/hr when you add in PTO, Sick Leave, Insurance, Pension, etc. It was kind of eye opening.

But at $337k per year, that would be a $150k - $180k per year job. Are there really that many jobs at that pay level in Harris County? Seems like a lot.

So I guess Rodney has his candidate; wonder who it is.

On a somewhat related note, Marilyn Burgess, Harris County District Clerk has decided not to seek reelection, after Commissioners Court refused to consider her requested pay raise from $179,000 to $260,000. That was after voting for herself to receive a raise to $295,000 as a member of the Grievance Committee, but was opposed by the committee and the budget director.

Guess she forgot to ask Rodney's permission first.
