I sure wish we were seeing better play to finish out the season. Our guys have played half as many games as other top teams. Carrick needs a better run in.

We literally have more points than any other EPL team over the last 3 months.

The VAR was gutless. Just gutless. That was 110% an intentional elbow strike to the head as the SUN player came from behind and passed Bruno.

To say it wasn't is just gutless. One of the things VAR was supposed to do was eliminate that kind of dirty behind the back/off the ball VC.

And to make it worse I'm out on a set of fields managing refs for a tourney. We were between games and everyone was standing around me and my iPad watching it. I had to explain to everyone that this play is VC and if they see that they need to have the courage to call it.

English refereeing is so bad in how they manage this type of behavior.
I think you are losing sight of the bigger picture: Bruno's hair wasn't pulled at all.

Priorities.

You can laugh just like you did when I expressed concerns about Onana. I already said short of Luis Enrique saying yes he gets the job. But you can't honestly look at how we have played the last few games and be perfectly content with Carrick.

It's ok acknowledge issues. Arne Slot was already looking like crap at the end of last season. But their fans were sure it didn't matter because they won the league. The players just didn't have anything to fight for. Now they want him gone.

Season is over for us. These are just glorified pre-season games, more or less, from today on out.

I will say this though: I don't think today really affects the manager decision, but for everyone that started who hasn't been starting, today was the kind of day that wouldn't really change your mind or give you pause if there was an opportunity to move them on. I think Zirkzee is gone anyway, but today's game wouldn't change anyone's mind (and he wasn't working overly hard to change any, to be honest). Mount- I can't see anyone buying him, but today's was an opportunity to show he could play in the double pivot behind Bruno, and that didn't go great. Lisandro… may be making Heaven first choice. Maz… we aren't getting to right back, let's be honest, but didn't do much to displace Dalot (who isn't exactly unassailable).

Again, we literally have more points than anyone over the last 3 months. I know your bit is to be over concerned guy. But just relax, our season is over. Today's game meant nothing. We are in CL and are not going to win the league, so don't get to into each game from here on out.

Every manager likes Mount. I like Mount but he was bought to play a position on a 4-2-3-1 that he has never looked capable to play. He's never looked in a double pivot. I'm not sure what his future and United looks like. Probably kept but rarely played unless Bruno misses time.

I'd like to see Lacey get some minutes in the last two games. Maybe Fletcher as well. But yeah in general these remaining games are pretty irrelevant beyond trying to get Bruno an assist or two.

I don't see how to move him on because of the injuries, but now that we are back in UCL his wages are back around 200k GBP a week. I mean, we probably can't get out of it, but I remember in 2021 if you asked most people, "Which young English midfielder would you rather have, Mason Mount or Declan Rice?" I think it would have been Mount and it really wouldn't have been close. I'm cherry picking a bit since Chelsea won Champions League that year, but still. It's just been very disappointing.
Dre_00

Maybe but they've never been positionally the same. Mount was a much more advanced mid when he was at his best at Chelsea. He's one of many poorly thought out transfers during the EtH era. EtH spent forever trying to convince his bestie Frenkie de Jong to leave Barca and then settled on Mount who doesn't have anything close to the same skill set just because he was available rather than him actually be fit for purpose. Was literally saying that he could play as a deeper lying midfielder because he did it for a year in the Dutch league 5 years earlier.

I feel bad for him because he's clearly talented when he's fit and can play in his best position. But he's never going to play in his best position so long as a 4 man backline is our formation and Bruno is available.

Given we will be in CL next season probably good to have Mount ready to be the Bruno backup. Cannot expect Bruno to play a full WC for Portugal and then be a part of EPL, CL, FA Cup, League Cup next season. Will need depth and at the least he provides quality depth.

Completely agree. If this team wants to take another step forward next season (and not going out in the first round of the gummy bear and FA cups would be a good start) it needs a huge amount of depth.

Are Ronaldo and Messi positionally the same? No, but we still compare them all the time. Mount and Rice are roughly the same age and play midfield.

Edit: I would note that the two tens midfield became popular because City did it. As we have seen, though, that works better when you have Rodri, and when you don't it doesn't work so well. But, anyway, that's the game lately, Pep does something and it becomes the vogue way everyone should play whether they can or not.

This potential foul they are reviewing on Raya is softer than the one that wasn't a foul on Bayindir in the first game.

Edit: foul given. No goal.

So an elbow strike to a head is ignored. Arsenal picking and mugging GKs all season on corners is ok.

And they are going to simultaously decide the championship and relegation on that call by a VAR. while ignoring all the other pushing and shoving within 3 foot of that.

That is such horse*****

Just so we remember what it looked like (and ignore the commentary which I think is the same person doing a Zapruder film analysis of Raya's hand being touched today lol);

Arsenal fouling our GK for the game winning goal in the opening match of the season.

Not a VAR in sight. Arteta was strangely silent.

Well, very very close; Barrada and the management team are recommending him to Ratcliffe. But would he really say, "I hear your recommendation, but… I just don't know. I really like this fellow at Boernemouth," and ignore the team he got to run the club? Seems very unlikely.

Choosing Iraola over Carrick will go over very very badly with the fan base and I suspect the locker room. I cannot imagine that.

The big blank on Carrick's resume is squad rotation needed for a large fixture list. Since there isn't any way for him to check or not check that box it's moot.

I think the only choices outside/above Carrick would be Luis Enrique, Ancelotti ( who has said he's staying at Brazil through 2028) and maybe Xavi Alonso. I know Xavi is being linked to Chelsea but if he did that Anfield might implode. And I think they may jettison Slot for Xavi anyway.

Waiting on Poch? Please don't do that. Do not do that. I can't see Nagelsmann. And Tuchel would cause a riot.

Unless there is a crazy wild card like Zidane that they can talk into coming in, or Klopp (who would never do that to Liverpool) or Pep (yeah right) I just don't see anyone else it could be.

People talk about Nagelsman, but the thing about Bayern is that they expect to win the Bundesliga, and if you don't, you are gone. I think he won it his first year, but his second year they fired him around the spring international break when they were in second. My point is just that Bayern is kind of a funny job, and I think they would probably look at him as a mixed bag despite having a good win record. So I don't know; I suspect a number of managers would win the Bundesliga in the Bayern job. How he does in the WC may affect how I feel about him personally going forward more than most. (How England does won't affect how I think about Teuchel unless maybe if they won it or something). (Edit: and the WC is too late for this round of hiring anyway, but in the future)

De Ligt had back surgery. Out until "early part" of next season (whatever that means with our flexible time phraseology).

I have a little experience in this area (as the patient). When it comes to back surgery, they really really really don't want to do it if they can. It's a lot more delicate than trying to fix a leg because it is the spinal cord. Obviously the route of doing it without surgery failed.

Honestly, I'm not counting on him being back and as good as before basically ever. If he is, I'll be happily surprised.

Edit: for the avoidance of doubt… I think now we know why, despite having 5 center backs already for only two spots on paper next year, we started looking for a center back a few weeks ago.

Edit2: He posted this to instagram; it looks like he's on one of those beds that kind of inflate and deflate parts automatically so he doesn't get bed sores; I wonder how much he's able to move his legs right now.

Back surgery is usually a tough thing to go through and I think it's basically standard practice to try rehab and physical therapy first to address an issue before going to surgery. That avoids the heightened risks of back surgery, and actually tends to lead to better longer term outcomes.

Granted, I don't know what De Ligt's issue was and what surgery he had.

After the **** show of the last two seasons that is very much a relief.

I don't see how they don't; Alonso is sitting right there, and Slot is working hard to overcome the odds and get excluded from Champions League.

BTW, with Villa winning, we only need a point to guarantee third (not that it matters much) and even if we don't, we are 9 ahead currently on goal difference.

I was hoping to see Bournemouth qualify for CL. Villa finishing 5th and winning EL seemed most plausible way as they could finish 6th and qualify for CL. Now seems like 6th won't qualify and so they'll need to beat City to try and catch Liverpool in 5th.

Never mind on Xabi Alonso. I thought they would swoop in last minute, but evidently not. Oh well. Enjoy more Slotball I suppose. Fine with me.

I mean…still a pretty decent chance he'll be available to manage Liverpool in December.
