Fox just got his max extension and apparently Trae Young isn't happy the Hawks won't offer him a max. According to Marc Stein, Trae did want to be the PG paired with Wemby and now Fox has that and Trae still doesn't have an extension. But Young does like Quin Snyder and the offseason moves.

Young has been extension eligible since July 6th.

-----

Chicago is only offering Giddey 4y80M but Giddey wants 30M/year. Other teams have interest, but no one really wants to deal with Chicago's S&T demands.

4 for 80 seems more than fair. If I was Chicago I'd just send him a new offer every day with a descending total value. (i.e. 4 for 79 tomorrow , then 4 for 78 etc.) See how much he wants to bet on himself to beat 20 million a year. Everyone still remembers when he was exposed in the playoffs and couldn't stay on the floor. He's a nice player, but 30 is star territory and he's not worth it.

Yeah, IDK.

Avg of 30M is less than Jrue, Jalen Suggs, Jarrett Allen, Jordan Poole, Jerami Grant, Immanuel Quickley.

Same as Herro, Jalen Johnson, Derrick White.

Slightly more than Hartenstein, DeJounte, Trey Murphy, Myles Turner.

He would be tied for 60th highest average contract. That kind of feels about right.

20M/year is about the same as Josh Hart, Caruso, Nembhard, Poeltl, Dillion Brooks, Patrick Williams, KCP and would put him at 83rd highest avg salary.

Last year he put up 38% from 3 (4/game) and after they traded LaVine, he averaged 21/11/9 on 50/47/76 shooting.

I think Giddey is closer to 30 than 20. But also, I am glad I am not having to decide if he is worth paying for my team. I think Chicago is just lowballing him because no other team has cap space to offer him a deal.

I think the real question is: What does Chicago think this team is capable of:

PG: Giddey / Tre Jones
SG: Coby White / Ayo
SF: Okoro / Huerter
PF: Matas / Essengue
C: ?? Jalen Smith ?? (assuming 35yo Vooch isnt the long term answer)

I think that's a pretty firm 7-10th team year in and year out for the East. Guarantee yourself the 11th-16th pick every year so you have no way to get better. Feels like the DeRozan Spurs.

This is an interesting graphic/status.

Look at Sochan's TS% and then look at the number of assists.
Jeremy forced Luka to pass the ball but then, disaster.

Eh, again he couldn't even play in the playoffs and until he shows that was an aberration his value is seriously capped. He is a fine player on an average team but locking him in above 20 million will be a mistake because the Bulls are only bidding against themselves for him. Even if they make him play out this year with no extension I don't think he's getting 30 on the open market. Next summer only the Nets project to have more than 30 million in space, so he's going to be up against the same headwinds he's looking at right now. (Also the Nets just drafted like 5 points guards so rule them out on him)

A lot can change in a year, but he might need to be realistic and see that 20 per year on a team where his skill set worked well might be a good fit for him and allow the Bulls to build around him too.

Sochan keeps Luka from scoring the ball himself (TS% drops) but the Spurs weren't actually very good so someone else just scores instead

But I think some of him being unplayable is that he is an on ball player and they were using him off-ball because he obviously isn't as good as SGA. He wasn't making shots against Dallas (sub 20% from three) so what usefulness does he have if he isn't creating and can't throw it in the hoop?

If Giddey is the one creating and you put long defensive wings around him (Okoro, Essengue, Matas, Huerter) that seems like the right path to him not getting played off the court. As a off-ball player, he is obviously useless. But as an on ball player (15/8/7 on 47/38 shooting last year at age 22) I don't think he can really be taken out of the game the same way.

------

I am not sure where you are getting that only the Nets will have cap space. The Wizards traded away all their long term deals (like Poole, Kuzma) and will have well over 100M in cap space. Kispert is their only player on a non-rookie contract that makes more than $8M and he makes just $13.9M.

The Jazz have 7-8 rookie contracts and Lauri and will have max cap space.

The Blazers have about 25M in cap space factoring in Sharpe's cap hold and could open over 20 more by stretching Grant.

Heat will have around 20 if Wiggins opts in and 50M if he opts out.

Lakers will have over 60M in cap space next summer. LeBron, Maxi, Rui, Gabe Vincent all fall off the cap.

Clippers can have like 70-80M if Harden opts out and still have like 30 if he opts in since they have a lot of team options.

Pistons can have like $20M while keeping Ivey's cap number and 50M by letting Ivey walk.

Plus, a bunch of teams could stretch players like we saw this summer.

Google's AI answer was my source, but you're right there will be more options next summer. Google must have taken this year's answer and just ported it to next year.

Quote:

1. Stephon Castle, San Antonio Spurs
Actual pick: No. 4

Castle won the Rookie of the Year award and deserved it. It was a bit of a roller coaster early on for him, as he'd showcase terrific monthlong stretches followed by months when he was a bit less valuable. However, from right around the start of March onward, Castle was tremendous through the end of the year, averaging 19.3 points, 5.6 assists and 5.2 rebounds while shooting 46 percent from the field and drawing six free-throw attempts per game over his final 25 games. He handled the ball more consistently during that time and showed passing and playmaking chops while still bringing the defensive mindset that made him so valuable to begin with.

At 6-feet-6, 215 pounds, Castle has a great frame and has already started to figure out how to weaponize it, using his pace and poise in ball screens at a tremendous level. Ultimately, the question for his upside is how he scores the ball consistently and efficiently. We know that he can pass and make quick decisions. We know that he's a physical defender who can guard up and down the lineup. But his jumper has to improve. He hit only 28.5 percent of his 3s last season and doesn't have much of a track record that you can point to with his shooting trajectory.

If you made me bet right now on one player reaching any sort of All-Star ceiling from the class, it would be him. But with Castle surrounded by De'Aaron Fox and Dylan Harper in San Antonio, I question how much on-ball responsibility he will receive long term. Regardless, Castle proved at Connecticut that he can be a winning player in any role, as he has an innate understanding of space and how to use it. He gets himself into dangerous areas by thinking quickly and reacting faster to what's happening around him than anyone else. His basketball IQ is very high, and even if the jumper doesn't come along, I'd bet on him being the kind of non-shooter who impacts a playoff series.

Also notable: Rob Dillingham didn't make top 20.

He shot .441/.338/.533 for the season and his post-ASB was just 6.8mpg with .381/.154 shooting.

It was clear that after March 1, they just wouldn't play him. They just let Randle and Ant run the offense.

I wonder if the Spurs had to fight for this setup with the Rodeo Road Trip.

Putting the two games we were going to play in Austin anyways during this road trip is low-key genius. Two road games, all-star break, two "home" games", and then just 5 straight on the road.

This seems really creative and maybe even generous on the leagues behalf.

Yeah, that is pretty fantastic for us. Players get to go home for the ASB then two games that are essentially home games right after the ASB followed by a pretty normal East Coast road trip.

Wonder what Miami is about to do that they need to cut his $5.6M salary. I would have given more, but we can't absorb all that salary without sending back.

Miami is up to something though, he is a useful player.
