I think Kawhi signed with NB when he was in Toronto. They didn't offer more money than Nike, but they offered a custom shoe, and Nike just wanted him to be a Jordan athlete. And in doing that, he lost the rights to his KLAW logo, because Nike owns it.
This Aspire contract deal paid him way more than New Balance or Nike did. Something like 25-40% more per year for a contract where he didn't have to do an ad, didn't have to make social media posts, didn't have to mention them in his press conferences, etc. No TShirts, hats, nothing.
- Stay in LA, sign with Lakers. To do this, the Lakers would need to make trades to clear some space, because they don't have enough room under the 1st apron hard cap to sign Kawhi for a veteran minimum.
- Sign for the most money possible: Full Mid-Level Exception. Charlotte, Chicago, Golden State, Indiana (they need to clear just 500k to use full MLE), Washington. I only see GSW being an option, but it would mean not keeping Kuminga and probably going back on a deal with Hortford and Payton, that they likely made but are waiting on Kuminga to play out. Indiana is a lot less interesting with Turner gone and Hali injured. Washington, Charlotte, Chicago make less than no sense. Kawhi would not be able to be signed and traded anywhere. His Bird rights would be extinguished.
- Rehab his image: Take BAE to go back to San Antonio. This would be the most hilarious timeline. I think Pop is still on good terms with Kawhi, but Spurs fans overwhelmingly hate him.
