Have you seen anything written yet explaining why teams are pressing and trapping more often this year?

Conceptually I'm in favor of it because it's stupid to concede to the other team that they can bring the ball up leisurely and get into their offense without being harassed by the defense. However, it's an 82 game season and a LONG playoff grind so I kind of get the perspective that you save energy where you can and that means less aggressive defense like presses and traps.

Hollinger talked about it some:

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6753950/2025/10/28/nba-first-week-defense-rookies-trends/

All over the league, teams are picking up full-court after a make, and jamming ballhandlers in the backcourt even after a miss.

Before I go deeper, though, let's pause for an anecdote to underscore my point. After Toronto pressured and harassed Atlanta full-court in the Raptors' unexpectedly easy 138-118 rout of the Hawks on opening night, I expressed mild surprised to a Toronto player that the Raps were committed to playing 94 feet even against Trae Young.

"Especially against Trae Young," he corrected me. The point: All that ball pressure is actually even more valuable against the league's most dangerous ballhandlers, because it allows defenses to wear them out during the course of a 48-minute game.

..

That said, the statistical evidence backs what I've seen with my eyes. The league-wide turnover rate is up from 12.6 percent in 2024-025 to 13.8 percent through Sunday's games this season, and more notably, the league-wide steal rate has shot up from 8.1 per 100 possessions to 8.9.

Backcourt steals are perhaps the biggest factor. Even the league's All-Star guards haven't been immune.

..

There's a good reason we're seeing this, and it gets back to the decision the league made in the middle of the 2023-24 season to allow more physicality on the perimeter. It didn't immediately click with coaching staffs that they could dial up the ball pressure, and do so without risking the myriad fouls that used to make such a tactic foolish for all but the McConnells of the league. However, the crucible of the playoffs saw more teams lean into this tactic (undoubtedly helped along by watching McConnell torment opponents all springs in the playoffs.)

With officials allowing much more incidental contact (and even some not-so-incidental contact) on the perimeter and in the backcourt, the risk/reward equation has completely shifted. The downside of a needless foul 50 feet from the hoop and free points for the opponent has diminished, while the possibility of harassing a harried (and, um, hand-checked) opponent into a bad miscue has increased.

The pressure is a three-pronged weapon too. First, it can create turnovers in the backcourt that often lead to layups the other way. Second, even without a steal, it forces teams to operate later in the shot clock in their half-court offense and thus reduce their efficiency. Finally, it's a great tactic to use against heliocentric teams to exhaust their lead ballhandlers as the Raptors did with Young above.

..

Of course, no strategy lasts for long in this league without coaches quickly thinking up countermeasures to negate them. The antidote to all this ball pressure? It may just be throwing speed at the problem.

This is all Mitch has said. I think Spurs are going to be conservative, especially with Fox and Sochan

Sochan's shot still looks slow, but he's out with a wrist sprain and no brace or tape or anything. Would guess he is back soon. Would love him to be back to body up on Bam tomorrow.

Hawks are up by 13 over Nets in the 2nd quarter. Time for Demin to ball out.

https://www.expressnews.com/sports/spurs/article/spurs-devin-vassell-mature-veteran-shooting-21126694.php

Tom Osborne wrote this just for Enzo.

A week into his sixth NBA season, Devin Vassell has emerged as one of the grown-ups in the Spurs' room.

Coach Mitch Johnson made that observation when asked about the shooting guard's strong start to the season and where he is mentally after he struggled through a variety of injuries in previous years that prevented him from reaching his full potential.

"I see an adult," Johnson said. "I see a very mature mentality. I see someone comfortable in their own skin. I see somebody playing winning basketball and making an impact and really enjoying it."

In helping the Spurs to a 4-0 start, Vassell, 25, ranks third on the team in scoring with a 16.8 points per game average on the strength of 43.3% shooting from 3-point range on a team-high 7.5 attempts and is tied for first in steals with 1.5 per game.

"Just trying to stay steady at the end of the day," Vassell said when told Johnson's comments. "We got a lot of young guys, but me and KJ (seventh-year pro Keldon Johnson), we've been here the longest and we just try to have that steady mindset and mentality."

"Steady mindset and mentality" also applies to his unflappable coach, said Vassell, who will enter Thursday night's home game against Miami averaging 15.0 points in 10 career games against the Heat.
"Mitch has been super confident," Vassell said. "He's been super steady. It's been great. He's finding his voice and he's been keeping us all grounded, so I appreciate him."

Vassell's teammates joined Mitch Johnson in praising the Georgia native's hard-earned, grounded approach to the game.

"Perseverance," Champagnie said. "He never stopped working. I know he wants to be the best player he can be. He wants to be that guy for us and for himself, so he comes in every day, puts the work in, works hard on his body, works hard on his jump shot and on defense, everything. We've all seen he wants to take those next steps and just be better."

**** that looks ugly.

Sutterer says:

MCL (interior knee ligament) sprain likely.

Also points out the ankle rolls. May have some ankle pain, but Trae already wearing braces probably helps him out here.

Doesn't seem to be an ACL injury.

Twitter is so comical right now.
There are always overreactions but with all the high scoring individual games, it's epic right now.
Austin Reaves is the second coming of Jordan.
Shai vs Luka debates.
It's going to be a long, fun season.

I live in the SA region and have YTTV. How do I watch their games? I'm a big fan of this team and want to watch the young guys grow into a monster.
From my brief research it may be Fanduel TV on my iPad

I'm not in the SA region, but I bit the bullet and got League Pass through the NBA app/site. It's $14/month to watch just the Spurs. I figured I would get it for at least a month while looking for another option, but haven't found anything yet. Basically $1/game.

I think if you live in the San Antonio coverage area, FanDuel is your best bet.

I live in Houston so I also bit the bullet and subscribed to League pass. It sucks to pay that, but I do enjoy always getting to listen to Sean Elliott or choosing to listen to the opposing teams. Announcers. Also, after the games you can watch the plays only, where you can see the whole game really quickly because you cut out all the stuff you don't care about.

I'm also a basketball degenerate so I like watching other teams games

We are just playing sloppy all over, especially on defense. Need to pound it inside and get some fouls called on Bam or just get some easy shots.

Lucky our threes are dropping or we would be getting blown out.

if you're in the SA area, League Pass will black out your coverage of the Spurs. It's the most ridiculous ***** Also, I have League Pass through Prime Video and I found the app/connection to be more reliable than NBA for whatever reason

Super ridiculous.

If you get League Pass through the NBA, you can connect it to your Prime account and watch it on Amazon, too. That's what I did.

Onto this game :super frustrating to watch. Being Physical and getting to the line is our key here. There have been a few they could have called and didnt, too.

Nah. He's been really supportive and Harper is WAY closer to his mom (parents are divorced.) Ron has talked about wanting Dylan to make his own path.

Before the draft, he had some stuff that was not great because he wanted DH to play for his Nets. But everything the last couple months from Harper has been super positive and nothing like Dennis.
