Anywho, this club is toast. That's the nail. These players will never get past this collapse. It's one thing to go out of the EL. But to go out like this will end these players. They're already weak and fragile. This seals it. The young talented ones will be sold for some modicum of money. But it won't be enough to fix the horrible financial situation the club is in. No money and no European football. They'll be relegated inside of 5 years. It'll be decades before the club are relevant again. If ever.

I was listening to the first extra time period coming home in the car. It was 2-4 when I got home and I was all ready to type a rant that basically said "kill the whole thing. Owners. Execs. Coaching staff. Players. Just fire every one of them and start over with a new club and new name and new players." Fortunately I never got the chance to do that.

He was excellent. To be honest, if you were a team in a league that didn't require top speed, he'd be excellent. He's still great technically. Unfortunately, that rules out the premier league and the other Top 5 European league teams that are primarily concerned with Champions League knockout portion (Bayern, RM, Barca, PSG). Which pretty much eliminates everyone that can afford to pay 17M a year on his wages other than Saudi.
I think we have to run out his contract unless Saudi came calling, but, honestly, even though he wasn't worth what the 5 year package cost, his first year was great and we've spent money on plenty of dumber things. (Edit: four year contract; same idea though).

I watched the last 7-8 minutes again. Because we had no traditional striker or 9 left in the squad to play, Amorim changed formations and made a positional swap. The back 3 were Yoro, Shaw and Amass. He took Maguire from CB and literally had him playing as a 9. He never dropped back.

Yeah he had Maguire at 9 at the end of the first leg match also. We don't make it easy for Amorim. Edit: well, not "at" the end, towards the end. If I remember correctly he tried that, and then at the very end he put Mainoo at false 9. Poor guy is trying everything.
That's pretty much where I've landed with him at this point. Don't think the broader press gives him enough credit for his performances the last several months. Basically as soon as Amorim started asking him to cover less ground because his legs were going, he started playing better. I think he could still have a role (not everyday starter) on a top team with the right partner. But it would have to be a partner who can cover for him and cover a lot of ground.
I've watched a few different highlight packages and thus far, I think the Dutch reaction to the last two goals has been my favorite.
You might need VPN to view it so if you can't watch it, the announcer just yells "JA JA JA JA JA JA JA" and then starts laughing after Mainoo's goal (and calls him the Stockport Seedorf which remains his best nickname) before just going on and on about what an unbelievable game it has been. Similar reaction to Maguire's goal.
It's usually really fun to listen to Dutch commentators because they aren't tethered to any necessity of remaining impartial (when it comes to EPL) but they don't actively root for any team. They just react as a person who loves watching football and watching impossible things happen. He wasn't rooting for United. He was just loving the game.

Amorim's post game seemed to suggest that Wolves will be the first game of rotation towards younger players. He'll start planning now to make sure everyone is fully fit for Bilbao and that should necessitate a fair number of younger players for the next two games.
But no, I don't think that they'll play well against Wolves or any other team tbh. Bilbao are a legitimately good team who should smoke us over two legs. But maybe we'll get lucky. In the league, if we play some young players in the remaining games and find a few who can contribute next season, then it'll be a success regardless of the score.

Heavy squad rotation and as a result predictably disjointed. That was an ugly half but a meaningless half.
This will be a good game to put on the TV whenever you want to take a nap.

I thought Amass played a very good game. Was really impressed with him. Fredericson didn't stand out to me but that's not a bad thing as a LCB.
