We are so unlucky. What a save by Van de Ven

This goalie is awful, no excuse for us to not be peppering him as often as possible

Feels like that should've been a kick instead of a header

He got good power on the header and bringing it down would have taken a lot of time. Can't really blame Hojlund IMO.

If we get a goal, I think we get a second and win. I just don't think we're going to get the first.

I don't see how this gets fixed.

No money coming in and they are already broke. So how do you bring in any players who would fit Amorim's system.

This is just a hot mess.

Luck ran out.

Vibes for next season were already going to be bad but they are going to be absolutely horrible now. No money, no European football, and a squad and manager that can't beat most EPL teams. Better than 50% chance that Amorim doesn't make it through the season. New ownership has missed on execution more than they have hit and I don't see anyway for United get themselves out of this mess. Next year is likely to be as bad as this year.

We are pretty ****ed for the foreseeable future.

Honestly, I'm not sure what the odds will be but if they are say, 50-1, taking a flyer on United getting relegated wouldn't be a horrible risk/reward. If just one of the promoted teams makes some smart decisions and gets a little luck, there are at least several plausible scenarios where it happens.
Dre_00

They had 3 shots, 1 on goal (a very generous determination...it really should be 0 shots on goal), 22% possession and 116 completed passes.

And we deservedly lost to them. That's so ****ing pathetic.

They also played Hack a Shaq. They were whistled for 22 fouls. There were at least 4 advantages played as well. And somehow got 3 cards.
Dre_00

They uglied the game up because they knew that they United wouldn't punish them. Credit Ange...he's usually hyper aggressive but when he got the lead, they played very compact, very controlled, and turned it into a ugly grab fest. And that was the end of United having any chance of scoring.

Honestly not sure where this club goes from here. Need a complete re-set and no longer sure Ruben is the manager for this team.

I like Bruno but we may have to sell any "older" player that has a market and I assume he will have one.

I was hoping for Liam Delap but that may be out the window.

They played low block even before the goal. I thought they were trying to score by getting a counter but that wasn't really working. The low block was working though. We couldn't break them down.

I was a little surprised. I expected "We play a high line mate" and instead Sean Dyche showed up today.

Well, I will say this. Amorim's post game comments were some of the most confident I've seen from a manager in his position. So confident that ordinarily I would say it's the tell tale sign that it seems false and that it would indicate that behind the scenes the problems are even bigger than they appear. But given how self deprecating and honest he's been in general it's interesting to see him speak with such clear confidence.

Bruno with the acknowledgement that he might not be around next season. Garnacho, and especially his brother, seem pissed. If you want to make up for missing out on 80m in CL revenue, then you should be able to make that and then some selling those two...assuming Saudi is still willing to offer 50-60m for Bruno.

I would strongly consider it. Would be a shame to see Bruno leave on such a low note but he's 30 and has played the most minutes (by some margin) of any player in the top 5 leagues. High risk of drop-off in the near future. It's the one area on the roster that is overweight with players. Would still have Mount, Amad, Mainoo, and apparently Cunha as options there. Then go spend that money on two real-life all-around central midfielders who are actually pretty decent at ball progression and at least average at defending and pressing, a RWB, and a 2nd forward (Whether or not they actually sign, it has been reported that CL football was not necessary from a financial perspective to sign Cunha and Delap. So in theory, adding sales of Bruno and Garnacho to the transfer kitty could make signing 4-5 players this summer possible).

I think missing out on CL is probably going to be a big deterrent on Delap choosing us

I think we have to completely reevaluate the players we are trying to bring in. I have no idea what our academy looks like right now. But, I assume its rotten like the rest of the organization. We need to be hiring someone from a Brentford moneyball data mentality and let them work. United doesn't have the luxury of "levers to pull" like Barca did selling off their future value for money today.

They could do what NF did. And that's just plain cheat, be willing to get caught and take the penalty hit.

Or do what City dies and that's just plain cheat and lawyer up 5 years later and take no penalty hit.

but that requires money. i get the feeling sir jim tapped his cash reserves trying buy something bigger than he could afford. we also know the Glazers are definitely not going to put money into the club.

I hear the United academy has some talent but I definitely don't know anything about who might be ready to get reasonable first team minutes, if any. Ironically the link I shared earlier about the potential Cunha transfer is in part from a person who helped start Brentford's inhouse data analysis that was credited for bringing them up through the football ladder. In relation to Cunha, his words were something to the effect of "I wouldn't touch him for 50% of his release clause". United are playing catch up in data analysis which is not where you want to be when you have no money and need a massive overhaul of your roster.

Already some rumors that United will pull out of the Cunha deal. Even though they said CL football wasn't needed to afford him, he would take a much larger chunk of their transfer kitty now. Though should be said that the rumors seem to be coming from other football executives and is pure speculation. I'm not sure how much last night will affect Delap. It was always likely going to come down to whether he prioritizes playing time in the short term or big club/CL experience. Assuming City clinch the 5th spot, he won't be getting first choice minutes for any CL club. Even Arsenal who desperately need a striker are unlikely to hand the goal scoring keys to a 22 yr old with one year of PL experience if they want to legitimately challenge for a title next season.

Guardian reporting again today that United have a little less than 100m to spend this summer without requiring any sales. So if they finalize Cunha and Delap, then that's it unless they can offload some or all of Rashford, Antony, Sancho, Garnacho, Bruno, Zirkzee, etc. And any departures that linger into August are going to screw over pre-season preparation. If they really believe in giving Amorim time, then they need to do whatever they do quickly. Most of the moves should be done by early July to give him time with his new players. Don't know if they are capable of that or if that's possible.

Independent reporting that Bayern is interested in Bruno if they don't get Wirtz. And it's looking like they might not get Wirtz.

I'm not sure I truly believe it, but I saw a report from a quasi-reliable paper (so Daily Mail or Mirror, that kind of level, not great, but better than an internet source non-Romano) saying they would pay a British transfer fee record. I think that's whatever Chelsea paid for Caicedo, over 100M.

I love Bruno, he's by far our best player. But… he's turning 31 soon. I kind of think it might be true because they came in hard when they went after Saleh. The difference is… Liverpool was unfortunately much closer to challenging for titles than we are.

Tough decision for Bruno and the club (supposedly Saudi will pay him more than a mil a week, huge money even by Saudi footballer standards).

I couldn't immediately find the "transfer record" story but here's a Daily Mail story by Chris Wheeler quoting 100M pounds transfer fee and 65M pounds pay per year (including signing fee and bonuses) to him (for 3 years, so 200M total).
