So CNN is reporting the admin wants to do a blanket withdrawal of legal immigration status for individuals from those countries? I'd take that with a grain of salt. Most people are opposed to an idea like that.

Any illegal from any country is fair game for deportation. Any immigrant here with a legal status that commits high misdemeanors or felonies, see ya. You participate in any protest against this country, legal status revoked. But not a blanket revocation of legal status. I hope this is just CNN gaslighting their followers.

The protected status was abused by the prior administration. This is a corrective action

I have no polling numbers if that's what you are looking for, so I am going on nothing but my gut here to be honest. A better way to state it is I would be really surprised that a majority of Americans would be in favor of a blanket revocation of the legal status of immigrants simply based on their country of origin.

You would be wrong since the prior Administration abused this "status" to avoid congress. The daily polls show that Americans want them gone. These countries are not sending the best, Venezuela empted prisons to send over there.

Can you help me understand this better? Are you referring to the BS of allowing everyone to claim asylum status, so that makes them 'legal'?

I'm not surprised that Marxists protest about immigration. That's a given in today's world.

But what I can't understand is how many Democrat normies have deep empathy for people getting sent home, but no empathy whatsoever for the victims of immigrant crime -- murder, rape, drunk driving, etc.

"Oh, no ... we can't arrest and deport Pedro!! He's lived here 20 years and has a daughter."

"Yes, but he has a violent history of crime including murder. He's been arrested six times."

"But he's just trying to make a better life for his family!"

No, temporary is meant to be temporary. Biden assigned the most ever to tps, topping more than a million people. Tps is meant to get peoplenehre, let them start lives here and plant roots.

Its meant to be a short term offer of safety while their home country works **** out.

Heres a chatgpt summary

Quote:

Joe Biden's use of **Temporary Protected Status (TPS)** has been both **historic in scope** and **controversial in application**, with many critics arguing it **undermines the "temporary" nature** of the program. Here's a detailed breakdown:

---

### TPS Intended Purpose

TPS was created by Congress in 1990 to protect non-citizens who are **already in the U.S.** and **temporarily unable to return safely** to their home country due to:

* Ongoing armed conflict
* Environmental disaster
* Other extraordinary but **temporary** conditions

It was **not meant to create permanent residence** or circumvent the normal immigration process.

---

### Biden's Expansion of TPS

Under Biden, TPS has expanded more aggressively than under any previous president. As of mid-2024:

#### **New TPS designations under Biden** (with initial approvals):

| Country | Reason | Est. People Covered |
| ---------------- | ----------------------------------- | ------------------- |
| Venezuela | Political/economic collapse | 500,000+ |
| Haiti | Earthquake, insecurity | 150,000+ |
| Afghanistan | Taliban takeover | 70,000+ |
| Ukraine | Russian invasion | 60,000+ |
| Ethiopia | Conflict in Tigray region | 26,000+ |
| Sudan | Military coup & conflict | 30,000+ |
| Cameroon | Ongoing armed conflict | 15,000+ |
| Myanmar (Burma) | Military coup | 7,000+ |
| Syria (extended) | Civil war (already under TPS) | 94,000+ |
| Nicaragua | Extended, despite being decades old | 4,000+ |

**Total TPS population** under Biden: **Over 1 million**, highest in U.S. history.

---

### How Critics Say Biden Is Abusing TPS

1. **Redefining "Temporary"**

* TPS designations are being applied to **long-term crises**, some of which have lasted **decades** (e.g., Haiti, Venezuela, Syria).
* Critics say this bypasses Congress and gives **de facto permanent residency** without legislative approval.

2. **Backdoor Amnesty**

* TPS recipients receive **work permits, deportation protection**, and in some cases later adjust to green cards if other options emerge.
* This creates a **shadow legalization** pipeline outside the immigration system.

3. **Political Motivations**

* TPS designations often affect **key voting blocs**e.g., Venezuelans in Florida or Haitians in the Northeast.
* Some argue Biden is using TPS **as a political tool** to curry favor with immigrant communities.

4. **Encouraging Illegal Immigration**

* Though TPS is only for people already in the U.S., **word spreads quickly**, and migrants may **rush the border in hopes of future designation**.
* This creates **pull factors**, even if the policy doesn't apply retroactively.

---

### What Makes Biden's Use Different

* Prior administrations also renewed TPS (especially under Bush and Obama), but Biden has:

* **Designated more countries at once**
* **Extended protections more broadly**
* **Renewed expired or phased-out TPS statuses** that were previously being wound down

---

### Summary

> **Biden has used TPS as a policy lever to grant broad humanitarian protectionsbut in doing so, has arguably undermined the law's original temporary framework.**

It's become a substitute for immigration reform, and for many critics, a way to **legalize presence without Congress**, with no clear exit plan.

Bidens Homeland Security granted TPS to anyone from those countries, like they did with Afghanistans refugees.

Thats why so many made it in. Its garbage.

Some of those countries took the oppertunities to send us criminals and worse.

Thanks, this makes it totally different. I was thinking strictly about proper paths to immigration, visas applied for outside of the US and legally granted. Also, valid political asylum claims made outside the US and the asylum seeker did not transit through other countries and not apply for asylum in those countries first (as per the law).

ETA: I'm familiar with what happened under the last admin and am all in on kicking them out.

Perhaps we need a splinter thread for the funding/group investigations

The Dems are already using the "he's deporting your roofing guy, or the cook at the local restaurant" to try to divide sentiment and help their side with optics. Admittedly many Americans, even those on the Republican side who favor illegal immigration control, are ultimately weak and suckers for the sob stories about the poor illegals just working to better their way of life. So I suspect we'll see the approval numbers on these actions go down as more and more of the deportees become standard illegals rather than violent criminal types.

With that said, full steam ahead on mass deportations regardless of who they are or what they've done. Trump DGAF and this is a problem that's needing addressing for a long time.
The difference is that conservatives are open and wanting a very robust work visa program. We have no problems with immigrants. We have a problem with the ones that don't follow the law which includes immigration laws. So don't come into our country illegally.

I work in agriculture. So many facets are almost entirely reliant on migrant labor. Cut the enormous amount of red tape around the work visas (H-2A) that employers have to go through and let these people properly apply and come over. Make renewals simple. Show proof of employment, prior year's tax return, no arrest record, and no draw on government assistance.

BAM!!

Renewed. Keep up the good work. After 7yrs of good standing, apply for the green card. After 10ys, access to citzenship.
Seems easy enough. But there's no money to be made for politicians who solve problems

The GOP and DNC need wedge issues especially now that abortion is basically off the table at the federal level
