There are many many many pictures of rioters buring US flags during the LA riots. These Marines saw one of the burned flags and respectfully disposed of it.

Is it really that shocking that a reporting arm of the DoD would take the opportunity for a photo op?

Kind of like when the liberals ran with the Border Patrol agents whipping the illegals...oh wait.

This is exactly the type of symbolic gesture that Marines would do to rescue a flag. They don't need any prompting and it matter if there's a camera present or not. Expending crazy levels of care and effort to accomplish a seemingly trivial goal is something every drill instructor spends 12 weeks training recruits to do without hesitation. Ask me how I know.

You are being deliberately obtuse. They didn't send in a rapid response team. That twitter acct is a state department feed that puts out information as close to real time as possible about emerging situations. The Marines were already in LA, and that acct got some info about the story and put it out on their acct. It wasn't some special mobilization just for the burnt flag, it was just some Marines who were already there doing the right thing with a desecrated flag.

It means that "Rapid Response" is the name of a Twitter account run by the Pentagon public affairs office. It has nothing to do with the 2/7 Marines except to publicize their actions that reflect positively on the DoD. Look at the other posts by that account. Just remember that Rapid Response is a PAO clerk at the Building and they pour over videos submitted from around the globe by public affairs units abd then put them in Twitter posts.

I believe that what he was referring to as "not great" was the fact that DoD Public Affaira uses Twitter to communicate directly to the public without the filter applied by "professional journalists" to explain why rescuing an abused flag is just an empty symbolic act.
