Did they try to keep him? Seems like the Pirates are a career dead end given their owner is a cheapskate type who won't spend on players and actively tries to tank his team. He seems like the type who would hang used paper towels up to dry so he could reuse them.

There has to be more to the story. If Murphy is that big of a loss, why weren't any of the high profile clubs seeking his services? Why Pittsburgh? Is he just trying to get closer to home?

I agree that it is not a priority but kinda sorta keeping the team in some sort of contention as cheaply as possible has to help the bottom line at least a little.
