When the Bryan Bros and Grant Horvat played BP late last fall, the greens were fast as hell and the fairways were narrower

The US used to be able to lengthen the course and make it play to their advantage…since about 2019 that has been rendered useless as Europe has as many or more bombers than the US now. The Euros can still set their courses up with nasty rough and narrower fairways ….basically there's no course setup that gives the US an advantage.

I think it just boils down to this - Team Euro has the greater quantity of the best players, while the best 2 the US have to offer are not good in this format. Recipe for a Friday and Saturday ass kicking. Then as mentioned, there is nothing special or unique about their games vs the euros to make the setup wn asset

Im still don't think we're using stats and data to our advantage and it makes no sense. The blueprint is there. They know what Molinari is doing for Europe. We never hear about that guy for the US. I feel like they basically played the hit and giggle in Napa to figure out pairings and thought yeah we're good. There is no explanation for running English and Morikawa out there again.

Kegan got asked about that pairing. He said "we are sticking to our plan." They don't have a plan. That pairing and things like teeing Scheffler off on the evens is objectively idiotic. It makes absolutely no sense and can't be defended.

I think their top is better, which really helps these first few sessions when you only have to play 8.
Also think there is something to style of play. Our next level after Bryson, Xander, Cantlay, Scottie are great players that are just 72 hole grinders that have weaknesses (length or iron play) but know how to make up for them over 72 holes with a strength. Their next level just seems to have way more fire power, and in an 18 hole birdie fest that can win out.

Basically seems like we have a bunch of marathon runners and we're at a sprint race.

Really great way to describe it. They are better suited for this than we are.

Still, I don't think we are giving ourselves the best chance to win.

There are six apex predators in this tournament. Europe has four of them.

The US doesn't have 2 apex predators. Arguably not even 1.

Watched mostly on tape delay today cuz of the commercial load. Agree with most of the thoughts already posted.

On one hand, I am kinda happy to only be down 5.5-2.5. Patrick Cantlay showed a lot of grit today to keep us in it. With the help of Xander in the AM and by himself in the afternoon.

Griffin, English and Burns are overmatched by this course and setting. Henley, Spaun and Morikawa aren't much better. Id be curious to know how they did on holes 5-12.

Speaking of holes 5-12, given the players listed above and the strength of the euros with the long irons, why did we set the course up with a bludgeoning of long par 4s. Half our team has no chance. We should have moved up the boxes like the euros did to their advantage in Rome.

Totally agree that guys like English, Henley, Burns and Griffin aren't here because they're match play gamers. They're here cuz they are consistent over time and emerge in large sample sizes. This generation's Kuchar, Furyk and Cink.

I'm not totally throwing in the towel yet. Really hoping 1-2 of the guys I called out above prove me wrong. I have confidence in Pat, X, Bryson, Cam and hopefully JT found something. Scottie just needs to see a few putts go in. Hope the ones he made on 15, 16 today give him a little boost tomorrow.

I'm almost as concerned about running Henley back with Scottie tomorrow as I am about Morikawa/Engish. The latter is simply a waste of a point. But having Henley hit half of Scottie's alt shots tomorrow morning is not good for Scottie's chances to avoid a disastrous 0-3. Granted I'm not sure I have a better idea of who else to put in that spot.

Yeah, let me know if 10 of the 12 on the Euro team think we have apex predators on Sundays of majors.

Are we playing by a major this weekend?

Leading into Ryder Cup, about half of Team USA players' state of their golf game was below average or inconsistent for most of this season. This includes Xander, JT, Morikawa, Burns, Cantlay, etc. As for Team Europe, most of their team was playing better this year.
aggiegolfer2012
How long do you want to ignore this user?
You can say their team is better without saying we don't have dudes at the top. There are reasons we aren't winning that don't revolve around some made up narrative about our guys mentality.
HeyAbbott

Neither Henley or Morikawa should be playing tomorrow morning.

We don't have dudes in the Ryder Cup. Thats clear as day. We've got a bunch of mental midgets. I mean the best player in the world for the US (in stroke play events) crumbled and didn't make it past 16 (maybe 15?) today. The same dude that lost in Rome 9&8.
SouthAustinAgSwag

We have stroke play dudes. Not Ryder Cup dudes.

Why did US dominate the Ryder Cup for 50 years? Because Hogan, Palmer, Nicklaus, etc were better players than Aliss, O'Connor, Jacklin, etc.

Same thing applies now. Outside of Scheffler (who like Tiger DGAF about the Ryder Cup), Bryson, and maybe Xander, the US players don't hold a candle to Rory, Rahm, Fleetwood, Hatton, Rose & Aberg.

So the only chance for the US is if the Euros play poorly (hasn't happened yet), or the US players punch way above their weight. And only Cantlay is doing that

We need a better system to select players

Not sure it would make a difference but Keegan would add something to this if he was playing.

Ben Griffin and Russell Henley, no thanks.

Maybe a different system could help keep you from being so limited, but I'm just not sure who you guys want out there besides Keegan.

Max Homa? Maverick McNealy? Akshay, kitiyama? Just not sure who realistically replaces what we have and moves the needles besides the captain himself.

The captain should be able to pull the emergency cord and put himself in.

**** let's just try the most basic of strategy with the guys we got.

Can't even get that right. But after I post this I'm going to set a 545 am alarm on a Saturday morning to watch it all.

What we need is a new crop of badass young guys to come up and start pushing for Ryder Cup spots. The current best Americans are in their 30's or late 20's and they aren't really good in team formats. Cameron Young is the youngest US team player at 28. Maybe some younger, more hungry players would give the US team some juice in this event.

Our 2 best players went 0-4 today. Doesn't matter what kind of system you have if your studs can't even manage half a point.

Make whatever excuses to want, today's meltdown lies squarely on Scottie and Bryson.

Pretty much this. Because of how the teams are selected, people love to nitpick the back end of the roster. But, like in every other sport, you go as far as your stars take you. Unless the top end of this lineup starts playing better, we're in serious trouble.
