How's he doing this morning? Hopefully going home soon.

He did everything right. We are pretty quick to treat with antivenin in rattlesnake bites if we have a patient who knows what they were bitten by and has evidence of venomous snakes bite on exam. We also have a battery of laboratory tests we perform on snakebite victims that help determine response to antivenin and/or need for antivenin therapy if it is questionable.

The stuff is expensive and can cause issues of its own including a high rate of allergic reaction/anaphylaxis, but rattlesnake bites are always taken very seriously.

Thanks, so he was given infusions every 6 hours overnight and into this morning. He had planned to drive to Denver today to pick up his girlfriend at the airport, she is making other arrangements to get to him....

They are going to keep him in the hospital again tonight to make sure there is no compartment syndrome or resurgence of symptoms. Then do labs again in the morning to look for any abnormalities, he should be out after that....

That sounds good. No reason to rush things with a snakebite. How many vials of antivenin if you dont mind me asking?

He said they gave 6 initially, then 3 rounds of 2 each. I hope that makes sense to you...

That hospital bill... wow. Snakebites are no joke. Glad he is ok is the most important thing.

Even if you do have insurance you are screwed. It is ridiculous and beyond belief what they charge. I have been in these situations. Thankfully he will be okay. Now time to pay.

Hey, he will be fine. That is what is important. I just hate dealing with what you are about to go through.

I wonder if it's really necessary or if the doc just needs a new boat

Isn't the going rate like $5-10k/vial?

That's what I've heard. When I get bit (I'm sure it'll happen) and hopefully it's just a copperhead, I'm gonna ride that out with a few strong beers and Johnny Football highlights on youtube. No way a copperhead bite should cost 5 figures. Rattlesnake maybe, but I'm skeptical.

Hopefully if you get bit, it is just a dry bite and nothing is needed! I got lucky when I was 12-13 and was tagged on the thumb by a cottonmouth.

I also know a guy that was tagged by a rattlesnake about a month ago on his hand because he was crawling through brush chasing after the snake so he could get a close shot on it. He obviously got too close...

To make matters worse, they decided to skin the snake out first and then head to the hospital, to which the doctors scolded them both. Fortunately it was a dry bite and nothing was really needed. Don't be like this guy, y'all

It's necessary and they are likely just following a protocol. BTW- Doc doesn't get paid any different whether he uses vials or not... but the hospital and pharmacy cost is significantly different.

Why would a rattlesnake bite be "dry", indicating they struck, but didn't inject venom? Do these small-brained cold-blooded creatures "choose" not to inject? for instance instincts told them to save the venom for prey and just not waste it for defensive strikes? ...or is it just pure luck the victim pulled away fast enough where the fangs punctured flesh, but venom didn't get in?

Same reason cats sometimes swipe at you with a paw, but don't have their claws out. It is a warning to back off without using venom they may need later to kill something they want to eat.

I have been interested in this as well. Because believe it or, I have been tagged twice by rattlesnakes. First time was on the hand and came with an ICU trip for 3 days. The second time I accidentally stepped on the poor little guy and he tagged my foot. No reaction the second time besides a little redness on my foot, so "dry bite." I have no idea if that meant the snake possibly just ate and didn't have any left, the angle was wrong, or if it was a conscious type decision not to inject.

Venom takes a long time to make, so adaptation would favor those who genetically don't inject venom for something they can't eat.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

it would be pretty cool if all pit vipers would go ahead and "adapt" to not inject venom in humans.

For what it's worth, there's two fees in healthcare. Professional fees (physician fees) , and technical fees. The hospital bill is going to be 95% of your fees. Not the doctor . For the past 15 years it hasn't been pro fees that have increased.

I used to have my dogs , is it called vaccinated? For rattlesnake bites.
I'm wondering about the effectiveness doc.
We stopped, because we are fairly certain they accidentally gave my Boston,Myles, the dosage for my Weimaraner. A couple days after the shots he turned yellow and had to be put down. A different vet said he couldn't believe Myles was still alive with the level of toxicity in his bloodstream.

I got scolded a bit several years ago for saying this after I got popped and probably fairly so. I took a saline bag and a tetanus shot and 10 hrs in an ER I got a $19k bill. I think I would think about skipping it hence the scolding; was popped on the finger but swelling got all the way to my shoulder.

Edit - copperhead.
