I think it is a bull snake! I thought it was a gopher snake at first, but looking at Google I think it is a bull. He was very handsome and sunning himself on the road when we came by. He headed for the grass when I took his picture.

He and the horned toad were worth the $2 price of admission!
Aren't the gopher snake and bull snake the same species, just called different things depending on where you are?
Bullsnake is a subspecies of gophersnake. This link explains it and includes a range map that is handy for differentiating them. I don't know how to visually differentiate them, only by location.

This was back in May. I was running through Friedrich Wilderness Area in Northwest San Antonio. I kept telling myself to watch for snakes and I really thought I was keeping a good eye out, but I literally had 2 feet on either side of this one before I realized what it was. Just about to give me a heart attack. I went back and laid the backpack down next to it for a scale, cause I knew it would freak out my wife when I showed her.

I continued my run a little on edge and a little bit slower and freaking out at every twisted stick along the trail.

So the Hognose is mildly venomous. Only found out last month. Also a large python could do permanent nerve damage or even cause an adult to bleed out with those long sharp fangs & teeth.

Found this big little guy in a driveway. Maybe the biggest of this species I've ever seen.

I Let the kiddos see it for a minute then let it go in the flower bed. The hand in the foreground is Hazel's and my youngest is holding it.

Technically, they are "mildly venomous" by anatomy, but not by behavior. The only way a hognose snake would get their saliva into a human would be a feeding response (I.e. if you were feeding the snake) - which has happened to me. Thumb barely swelled up - didn't even approach a wasp sting. The Duvernoy's gland in hognoses produces their saliva. Technically, garter snakes are "mildly venomous" as well - same setup.

If there is no food involved - never happens. They'll huff and puff (spread their necks), but always "strike" with their mouths completely closed.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

I think the last time I saw a horned toad was in the 80s, and it was also in the panhandle.
I have lived in Central/South Texas my whole life, and I saw my first live one two weeks ago in the Hill Country. I was way more excited than the rest of my friends, but I guess that is why I follow a Snake Thread.

Yea, wife and I walked up on a massive garter snake yesterday. Probably close to 30" but it was gone before I could get my phone out.

A couple years ago, I would have sworn that snake was a water moccasin. Thanks to this thread, now I can at least say it's a non venomous water snake.

As thick as it is with a blunt tail I thought Moccasin at first but the pupils are round.
What other clues?

No mascara mark, dark vertical lines on jawline, eyes higher up on head, length:girth ratio too large for a large adult snake of that size, and no pattern on belly scales (hard to tell in this pic but somewhat noticeable).

Crazy this thread has made me the snake ID guy now amongst family and friends. I didn't know crap about snakes until I bookmarked these threads many years ago. This was an easy one. Friend just sent this from golf course in Tarrant county. Big SOB.
