Eastern Hognose Snake at the Beach

I used to have a black eastern hognose like that. It was about 3.5 feet long. Really big snake.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Cool looking snakes. I found a solid black one behind Pebble Beach when I was in school. I think the only solid black one I've seen.

I've had two decent encounters in the last week but only have pics of one. I just caught my first Eastern/Yellow rat snake here at Disneyworld. Little guy (2.5' or so) was climbing up the stairs for the slide and I had to go relocate him. Lifeguards and everyone were freaking out and looked at me like I was crazy when I just snagged him and walked off. Sometimes I forgot that's not normal for most people…

Also caught this guy in San Antonio

Very brave of you to hold a Facebook Copperhead.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of them, but of course, people always used to bring them into the zoos I worked at and I was the one they always called. Had a solid maroon one brought in when I worked at the zoo in Victoria.. should have kept that one.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Did they still have the python in the AKB when you were there? They used to have a huge python (10+') that they were keeping in the back for somebody in the community. Don't know the details, whether he had surrendered it to them or what, but I hated walking by that thing in the narrow back hallways behind the exhibits. He would strike at the glass on his enclosure sometimes when he was hungry and I never felt the glass was really enough to hold him back if he put his mind to wanting to get out.

They had one when I worked there, but that's been 25 years ago.

I can't remember if he got out or perished or was moved ahead of time in the big flood that got most of the AKB animals.

I believe he was moved. But, I wasn't there at that time.

The dog interrupted this Texas Cobra while he was trying to eat his dinner so we moved him and his prospective meal to the front yard so that nature could continue its course.

Buffalo Lake NWR today, southwest Randall County. Wife almost stepped on this little guy, who was probably 8-10" long. He was doing the whole "I'm a rattlesnake" act, waving his head, and shaking his tail as if it had a rattle.

He was blocking a narrow gate, so when the photoshoot was over, wife stepped over him and placed her foot about 8" past him. He struck at her. Cracked us up. When I stepped, I intentionally stepped close, and he struck at me, too.

Behavior seems like a bull snake, but I've never seen one this color. Google looks at the image and calls it a green whip snake, which lives in Europe.

Any ideas?

Facebook video, sorry, but it shows the tail shake

EDIT: What about a speckled kingsnake?

https://www.inaturalist.org/guide_taxa/850015

Quote:

NOT venomous. Head and neck appear to be the same size as the body, smooth scales, round pupils. Uniformly cylindrical body is black with yellow to white spots on each scale. Belly is yellow checkered with dark blotches. Typically 3 to 4 feet (91 to 120cm) in length. (J. R. Dixon and J. E. Werler, Texas Snakes: A Field Guide, University of Texas Press, 2000.)
Behavior

When threatened, the speckled kingsnake will shake its tail like a rattlesnake to deter predators. It frequently will expel musk and feces or bite when threatened.

If the guy above is a speckled kingsnake, he definitely has more yellow than what I'm used to seeing.

The Internet searches I saw said that juvenile king snakes had the banded pattern that disappears with maturity. Maybe the yellow does, too

There is still yellow but much less as they get older.

While a lot of babies do start out yellow and lose it as they age, a small percentage of speckled/desert kings across their range in Texas can be yellow as adults. Most common along the coast and in SE Texas, Big Thicket, etc.

Isn't the more defined pattern of CanyonAg's snake more typical of a desert king? Randall county looks to be just a little outside of their range from the maps I've seen.

By the Wikipedia map, we are in speckled territory, at least 90 miles from desert

sighting location
12f Mane
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That map is a reflection of the Burbrink paper that came out a few years ago and split the common kingsnake from one species into 5 (previously they were considered subspecies with large intergrade zones). I still adhere to the previous taxonomy, and the snakes from that part of the world are intergrades, showing characteristics of both speckled and desert kings.

Couldn't get to my good snake spots with the ponds overflowing onto the path. Still saw a water snake and a skink (I think).

This was just outside the batting cages at Katy Park. Several of the boys and another Dad almost stepped on it. I didn't get a picture with its mouth open but definitely white, also shook its tail when I got close. Water Moccasin or something else?

Badace52
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's a cottonmouth (venomous)... water moccasin is an old and somewhat ambiguous term that is often used to describe any kind of water snake and the term moccasin originally referred to copperheads.

Cottonmouth is more pathognomonic terminology.
